I loved the sound of the Yukon stove when it was humming. Alaska was the only place I have ever been where you lay the howitzer after setting up your tent and stove. Normally, the first thing you do is lay the howitzer for the direction of fire first. But, in the winter, it was so cold that we had to set up the tents and fire up the Yukon stove so that if anyone felt early signs of frostbite coming on, they would go to the tent to warm up and then come back out and help finish emplacing (lay) the howitzer.Oh, the memories. Yukon Stove. Burned MOGAS or Diesel if I'm not mistaken. Was once near a soldier who suffered an epileptic seizure and kicked lit stove over out at Graf. Thank heavens we placed fire extinguishers nearby or burned down tent. SOP back then.
Set up by Bad Hersfeld near East-West German border one winter . Heh, I listened to my SW radio lots during down time when not patrolling. Stove kept everybody warm as temps hit zero. Ha ha, built a bobsled run. Dude broke his leg sliding downhill about 60 MPH.
Only in the Army, I tell you.
