Looks like he’s a ball patter. It’s just a bad habit that’s not really part of his actual throwing motion.
Brady is/was a 'ball patter', too. Didn't seem to hurt him much. Many QBs pat the ball before delivering. The clip showed Coen teaching him something - having his hand more on top of the ball? That would tend to make his throws bore through the air better versus a ball with a little sidespin might tail one way or the other, right?
What Coen was showing him is important, you notice some of his later throws were flaring on him a bit. Man I love how Coen was immediately on this though, I just love watching him work.
Coen is a major hire for us. Changes everything, including the public profile for the offense.
Accuracy and decision making > arm strength
Id say its not part of his motion but is part of his throwing process as he uses it as a timing and rhythm thing to start his motion, but I dont see any problem with that. No different than Jack Nicklaus cocking his head right before he takes the club back.
