Crowdus comments

I think you missed the mark on who he was talking about....

I think I need to walk back some of my thoughts for the last several years. I have argued many times that Stoops doesn't keep his thumb on the Offense, I think by what has been said by Stoops himself, and today with Scang and Crowdus, I was wrong in my thoughts.

Quote from Scangarello: from Nick Roush's article
“You gotta earn your way into the red zone and you have to be precise. We had a 14-play drive in that game and came away with nothing. We missed a kick because we took a sack down there. When you’re shortening the game and playing complementary ball and not playing fast, not speeding the game up, it demands precision and demands execution in the red zone that rely on touchdowns, not field goals. That ultimately has held us from being an explosive offense that scores points and creates separation. It just hasn’t happened. We’ve let every game linger because of it. Whether it’s get down there and kick it, we’ve had kicks missed, we’ve taken sacks and made kicks harder. We gotta be better complementary and we gotta get touchdowns.”

Of course Stoops meddles in the offense, how else would your explain all 5 OCs running very similar styles?

This is my biggest gripe about him, he really needs to keep his hands off the offense, if not I believe this is the downhill trajectory of the program. High powered offenses are the future of college FB right now.

I disagree. Of course he walks back his statements after getting his pee pee slapped by the staff and Twitter has made a big deal about. I’m not saying stoops isn’t involved with the offense but crowdus is definitely calling out the play selection in the red zone

You could be 100 percent correct that he's walking it back or Roush could have put the wrong name with his comment and Crowdus was correcting him. Either way, not a good look this week.

“Probably — I would have to say the play-caller, because we were down in the red zone and just couldn’t get it,” Crowdus said. “That’s pretty much all I can say.”

thats actually a great point by Scangarello. You can play to shorten the game but it sure takes away any marging for error and puts extreme pressure on maximizing every scoring opportunity for sure.

This is just an absolute truth in football . . . every offense out there runs better and executes better when ran with some level of tempo. That doesnt mean hurry up or even no huddle but it does mean all offenses have to have a crispness and rhythm to them to work.

Its like trying to swing a golf club. You dont have to swing hard . . . but man you cant pull the club back in slow motion, stop a few times, then try and fire and still make any consistant contact.

1) the quote needed more context. Listening to the entire quote sounds like he has no explanation and says the issue falls to the play caller. It could be better stated, but as usual quotes and clicks are more important than facts.

2) complimentary football is the dead giveaway stoops is on it again. We've heard that at least the last three ocs. @sieken is dead on there.

Couple that with, he said he had a multi hour meeting with O Staff on Sunday, and one of the points he brought out about that, was that he needed to do some self refection. I don't think you can land the type of wide outs that they have landed the last two years if you aren't going to use an offense where they get multiple touches a game.

I guess he's trying to appease fans but the come to Jesus was odd timing. Offense actually moved the ball just couldn't punch it in. They only got I think 8 possessions because the defense couldn't get their a$$ off the field. Complimentary football goes both ways.

100 percent! Watching the game, I was way more disappointed in the defense in the Vandy game. It was like they had never played a scrambling quarterback before. Stoops also said we are not good enough to win being one dimensional but if he still wants ball control, he should have given EG a chance to hire a new qb coach and change his offense. He had proven he could adapt his gameplay pretty well. I'm a little confused by the things that have come out since the Vandy loss.

Limited snaps means limited opportunities for everyone. Stoops team's have always snapped the ball at one of the lowest rates in the country.

The quotes sounded like Scang was wanting everyone know how difficult and how little room for error there is when playing such a methodical pace trying to help the defense..

Exactly! If Stoops want to succeed going forward(at UK or elsewhere) he needs to let the offensive coaches, OC or whoever do their jobs n run, call plays, scheme what they feel will win games and not be handcuffed to check with him on every damn call….
That said I think Scang has done a piss poor job of adjusting his scheme to the talent we have…

I agree! As abysmal as our O was if we don’t run freaking man coverage on an average at best QB (passing) that we knew was starting and ran for some yardage against us last year n give up 160 rushing to him…Damn it’s almost like our coaches are sabotaging our team…

I tried to tell some of the know it alls on this board that the offense runs by what Stoops dictates. Not sure if he dictates to the defense as much but he definitely calls the shots, to his detriment, on offense. He’s one of those control freaks that hire assistant coaches but then won’t let them do their job. What Crowdus said is exactly what we already knew. FWIW you can expect him to be in the portal right soon after the Louisville game.

Hello...been saying this for what now!!!???
This ain't your granfather's cfb. Scoring is the name of the game and wins championships.

I mentioned this a few weeks ago but go back and watch stoops' post ole miss game comments. he says 'we need to get back to how we play...run the ball, etc....' ball control etc...not that we don't want to run the ball but it's what he always does... we had a couple turnovers and bad plays late so his move going forward was to crawl back in the shell and try to play 'keep it close' offense. we run the ball historically, we all get that. we weren't killing it before that game but we were pushing the ball more offensively early in the year and would get occasional chunk plays.

My biggest take aways from all this:

1. It’s a shame that the media sets people up for drama causing sound bites like this and that people still somehow fall for it

2. Regardless of what was meant or how it was said, it’s clear you have disgruntled players and coaches who don’t really buy into the over all plan. That’s the head coaches job to manage everyone and to motivate them all to gain buy in and to gel all phases. This tells me why we have been flat and that stoops doesn’t have the full confidence of this squad. Not an indictment, but it’s clear he’s losing the locker room

We heard that same phrase last year from Coen "Complimentary Football"

Crowdus replied to Nick Roush that he wasn't calling out the OC. So who does that leave?

If his hand is on the brakes, that explains a lot. It also explains why our OC choices are limited.

You CANNOT have consistent explosive plays if you're focused on playing a certain number of minutes and snaps per possession. It's micromanaging it to oblivion. There are TOO MANY good teams/talent in the SEC to do that on offense. You HAVE TO TAKE what the defense is giving you AND weave it into your regular offense. We're not doing that.

I was wondering why the TEs in our schemes are always disappearing. If you want to micromanage, you have to pull extra blockers from somewhere. That eliminates a lot of your hot reads as well.

It's not very much different than Cal with the way our offense struggles on the court when we put the brakes on instead of playing to OUR strengths and playing as we play the rest of the game. You don't tell your jockey to pull back on the reigns if the horse isn't tiring. You're just making the horse work harder to do what it wants to do instead, and taking a chance on hurting the horse physically and mentally if you pull back too much when they want to run and have the field at their backs.

Stoops definitely gets involved and wants to milk the play clock and play methodical. That’s why I advocated for getting an OC that ran spread option/speed option/RPO football. At least you’d be on the same page playing with a run first coordinator and it’s the stoops identity. Play blue collar hard nosed football.

I get it…the fans want it in the air and while that’s ideal…if he can’t let go of the offense and accept that the additional points you’ll get from a tempo passing game outweighs the additional opportunities the opposing offense will get as well….then go all in with long running drives, fast athletic QBs, RPO…. Basically run a more advanced version of the Bowden year with someone who can actually throw a little too. I personally enjoyed running it down teams throats

I agree, that's my feeling as well. I assumed the change in OCs meant a change in mentality regarding Offense. It doesn't appear that was totally the case. I was pretty sure Stoops was not on board with taking a 30 yard go route on 3rd and 3, with a good RB. However, you hire guys to give you an identity on Offense, IMO, it's bad business to then paint them in a corner that doesn't allow them run that Offense the way they think it works best. I'm of the opinion in that Vandy game, you attack the hell out of them in the first half, you then help your defense by allowing them to pin their ears back on a qb that doesn't throw it all that well.

Agreed. But...

2. Regardless of what was meant or how it was said, it’s clear you have disgruntled players and coaches who don’t really buy into the over all plan. ... all we heard from the head coach is that we need to open up the offense and get those explosive plays. All off season for 2 years. We used that line to land some very talented WRs and a QB.

Now we get into the target season where a bunch of things aligned to give us an outside shot at the SEC East, and we've basically been micromanaged into 3 losses... w.t.f.

This was the same sht (this focus on precision bs) that JP was obsessed with as OC and coach that only works against the best of the conference when you have ALL of the top tier talent (but not when you aren't bothering to recruit that talent). "Throwing through windows .... timed with receivers entering that window .... as you're progressing through the reads..." as if the DCs, and their DBs, LBs, and DL in the SEC won't have a say in that... lmao. Just got to knock a guy off his route one beat and the whole thing goes to sht.

That's why Hartline and Cobb, and then Fidler and Cobb went off script to win games. It never mattered what the defense was giving JPs offense. They were stuck trying to make this precision stuff work no matter what.

Now, it seems to make sense why we're fkn around at least 2 possessions per game, three straight running plays up the middle, no tempo, no hot reads, no taking what is wide open when the defense gives it. And EVERY GAME the defense gives you something. Every down they give you something because they can only cover so much on every play. But we're fkn micromanaging possession time?

Fk that

I played defense like an animal. Old school. I didn't care wtf the offense did, because I knew I wasn't the coach's favorite and the ball wasn't coming my way unless I put myself in its path every play on D. IT ABSOLUTELY MATTERS however to your defense at this level, that your OFFENSE DOESNT WASTE THE OPPORTUNITES AND POSSESSIONS you help give them.

THEY DONT GIVE A FLYING F IF YOU SCORE IN 5 PLAYS OR 10 OR 15, IF YOU FKN SCORE. NOW, if you fk around all game (like Vandy where you could have mixed things up, gone with some tempo, passed over the middle with quick slants and short throws to the tight ends/slot, mixed with play action) and try to "eat clock" to keep your D "rested" you WASTE OPPORTUNITIES that your defense, and the opponent's defense give you, and that's just brutally psychotic to a defense.

OUR STYLE OF PLAY ROBBED CROD of a career game opportunity against Vandy and turned around AND GAVE IT TO the COMMODORES instead. We stole snaps from ourselves

BESIDES what the pressure of your offense scoring does to THEIR offense, especially at HOME. Your D doesn't have to stop them ALL game. They just have to stop them ENOUGH. IN THE MEANTIME THEY CAN T-OFF AND HAVE SOME FUN. PIN THEIR EARS BACK AND SUCH, but they can't do that if they are trying to get the offense back into the game. They'll take risks they shouldn't. They'll miss assignments because they're trying to DO TOO MUCH, JUST LIKE YOUR QB because he's trying to make a big play (because you're too FKN STUBBORN to take what the OPPONENT is handing to you....)!

Agreed, I’m fine with the identity of the team that Stoops is shooting for. I like a physically tough team that is better than average running the ball.

I think you cap your ceiling with that being your only identity though. In this league most team’s defenses are built to stop the run first. You also have to have a quarterback that can win with his arm when you run into the teams that are stout up front. Easier to do at the next level, you can draft and pick up free agents to build to your identity. I think that is a much tougher nut to crack in college. The better quarterbacks and receivers want to play in an offense where blocking isn’t the only thing they are asked to do.

The OLine is another story as well. Several of Gran’s OLines were good/great at run blocking, only to struggle with pass protection.

I honestly don’t know what the right answer is here based on the talent we are likely to land each year. When you recruit like the bluebloods, it’s easy to pick a scheme and stick to it. I think Stoop’s job of finding that balance between Offense and Defense is more difficult. You can win games running ball control or wide open. The goal is to compete for all of the marbles, I think that requires being better than average on both sides of the ball.

I think the fumble on the opening drive against SC killed any chance we had at being anything other than what we have seen this year. Had that play succeeded, I think we see more tempo and creativity from the offense. Instead, it failed so I think Stoops is now like see I told you that you have to play run centric offense in order to succeed and he then proceed to take away all creativity from the offense. Prior to that game, we were seeing more shot down field. Now we get bubble screens on 3rd and 9.

Do any of y’all remember when Stoops made a comment about the offense scoring too fast? I believe it was fairly early in his tenure.

Stoops stated after the Tennessee debacle that the deliberate style is 'who we are'..
That's fine if it wins.
From my viewpoint, this line doesn't run block much better than it pass blocks.
Yeah I think the reality is people don’t care per Se. But we all know in order for the program to take another step or even to maintain, it’s got to come from the offensive side. The defense isn’t perfect but it’s generally competitive. Our offense generally is not

Wallace had a terrible game and was responsible for a lot of those QB take offs. Just kept getting sucked in with the ball fake and getting himself caught up in a pile instead of holding his water to key on the QB and keep his feet and vision free to react. He has the athletic ability to shut all that down if played right.
