Crowdfunding -- help spread the word? (non-profit and UK related)

Morning, folks. I wasn't sure if I could post this here or not, but I'm giving it a shot.

My name is Nathan Stevens and I frequent the Football/Basketball forums under the username to the left. I'm a graduate of UK (2000) and future Masters graduate (May 2018). I work in the College of Communication and Information here at UK, have been for some time, and I'm currently heading up a virtual reality project that I was hoping you all might spread the word about.

I have a team of talented individuals who are creating a VR game for children with cancer. The game's purpose is to improve the quality of life for the children while they are in the hospital. It is intended to act as a distraction. We're creating this game so that kids can put on a VR headset, forget their surroundings and interact with other kids/patients without leaving their hospital bed, as some simply cannot leave their beds (and some of the kids are isolated from others). It's a mobile-based VR game, so they will only need a phone and VR headset. All the money we raise for this will pay for programmers/artists and hardware (which we'll donate to the hospital). Our long term goal is to give this game out for free to any hospital in the country that wants it. We are not looking to make a profit.

I'm posting this in hopes that you'll spread the word about the project. I truly believe it is worthy of attention and I know you all probably know someone who might be interested in helping.

The link for the crowdfunding is here:

Thank you in advance. Apologies, Mods, if this breaks the rules. I honestly wasn't trying too. Anyway, hope the day goes well for you all. GO CATS!

I posted it on Facebook and made a small donation.

Small word of unsolicited advice (and you may have no control over this), but it might be better if there were some smaller denominations on the donation buttons.

Most random people will never donate $250, and may not go to the trouble of figuring out that they can write in smaller amounts.

Not meaning to distract from your post...just a thought I had (which may or may not be good advice).

Good luck with your fundraising efforts. It looks like a very worthy cause.

Yeah, I don't think I have control over the page. I do agree with you, though.

Might want to see if you can get the alumni association or some other group actually in UK to push this. Your link would have more credibility with a uk.edu or something similar. Not doubting your legitimacy but anyone can push a crowd funded effort these days.

It is fine. That is what UK Philanthropy provided to us. I unfortunately have zero control over the link or how it is presented. I understand what you are saying, though.

My email is nss@uky.edu if you need proof of legitimacy. :)

Btw, I am not offended by that statement. Being former IT I understand the skepticism.

Oh, and thank you for the alumni suggestion. I will go that route as well.

When you donate, you get a receipt directly from UK.

I posted the link to Facebook and noticed much less engagement than I would expect.

Facebook also wanted me to add a donate button to my post. I suspected that my post wasn't getting much circulation because I didn't use their donation process.

Did a little checking, and apparently Facebook charges a 5% fee to setup to take donations through their process.

I really appreciate the help with this. Lol I honestly didn’t know how people would react to my post, but you all have been great.

Facebook is interesting with how it treats things, but I guess they have to keep the lights on too. Or the Oculus going lol
