One thing is almost guaranteed: lots of concern for cheating.

Interesting article shares "at $5,586 for every two semesters over and above the school's tuition & fees and room & board ranks second-highest in the nation as of last year" about Auburn tries to explain it.

This is all clear as mud from here.

Paraphrased from the article:
Kentucky and Georgia, whose figures rank 14th and 13th in the SEC, co-sponsored the legislative proposal enacted by the SEC during the conference's Spring Meetings last month calling for transparency within the conference whereby each school must submit a report to the conference office illustrating "the value of the institution's 'other expenses related to cost of attendance' for the upcoming academic year and describing the methodology for determining such value."

Related articles: SEC coaches are increasingly skeptical of cost of attendance figures and "
Here's the SEC in order:

Tennessee $5,666, Auburn $5,586, Mississippi State $5,126, Ole Miss $4,500, South Carolina $4,155, Arkansas $4,002, LSU $3,680, Missouri $3,664, Kentucky $3,526, Florida $3,320, Alabama $3,298, Texas A&M $3,100, Vanderbilt $2,730 and Georgia $1,798.

In late May, each SEC school will probably submit their final cost of attendance at the league's spring business meetings in Sandestin, Fla."

Leave it to the NCAA to completely screw up something that should as simple as a flat stipend. Just the fact that they're different at all is an entire can of worms that shouldn't be opened. How about this: average each conference school's cost, and make it that figure. I doubt any kid is gonna pick a school saying "okay, I can make this $4,500 go further in Tuscaloosa than I can in Starkville" but you can be damn sure they'll pick the higher figure just because it's bigger. The whole idea is insane.

Abandon all this stipend crap, designate the athletes as employees of the admissions department, pay them $10,000 a year and everyone can stfu.

Glad to see a change made and more needs to be done. It will hopefully be dynamic.

Btw UL has a significantly higher COA payment than UK. Makes no sense.

Some how this is all tied in to federal money. Maybe I am wrong but the phrase "cost of attendance" is a government controlled phrase.

"What's Included in the COA
As dictated by Congress, the COA is the average cost to attend for one academic year (fall through spring). It includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Colleges adjust the COA yearly to reflect changes to these costs."

I am happy a change got made, but I'm not surprised to see it was made in the most insane, unfair, and nonsensical way possible.
Wasn't it just a few years back that Emmert said things like he didn't want college athletes in a position to make money:
"Striking a balance to maintain amateurism while also using business practices to support those athletics is a concern," Emmert said. "You don't want to have amateur student-athletes in a situation where they are pitching for products."

But if you are the NCAA, you can pitch any product you want created by those same student-athletes and cash the checks.

I'll enjoy watching everything burn to the ground. This is going to f things up to a whole new level.

Can't wait til an athlete that is given this goes out and steals, uses the money for drugs.. Etc. can't wait. Glad I'm done with my schooling.

That's a hard comment. What makes anyone here think you did anything with your schooling.

This COA is going to be a big discussion in the future.
