Congratulations Coach K

I don't hate K, I'm sure he's a great guy, and yes he's a great coach, but that's just it...He's a basketball coach. He hasn't invented a cure for cancer and he isn't advocating for world peace. He teaches guys how to throw a ball through a hoop.

Yes, I'm sure he has enriched the lives of many and been a great teacher and great example to many young people over the last several decades, but there are probably a handful of teachers at your local high school that have as well. They aren't paid millions of dollars a year however and don't have entire networks dedicated to blathering about how great they are. It's just all kind of ridiculous to me.

Congrats for keeping the NCAA from vacating a good number of those wins by playing players that were NCAA ineligible.

DALLAS (AP) - A starter on Duke's 2010 national championship basketball team purchased nearly $100,000 in custom jewelry that season from a New York firm that caters to professional athletes, and he's now being sued for failing to pay the balance of what he owes.

Duke's second-place finish in the 1999 NCAA tournament is in doubt after former player Corey Maggette admitted he took cash payments from a summer league coach while in high school.

Maggette signed a sworn statement reversing earlier denials and admitting he took $2,000 from Myron Piggie, his summer league coach for a Kansas City-based AAU team, Duke said Tuesday.

Here's just a few "Look the other way" from NCAA.

Congrats K
Love it. The K danglers just ignore this as if it never happened. Just proves what a fraud he is.

Wonder who will replace him when he retires? Capel? Dawkins?

For a guy that spends 95% of his in-game coaching doing what is in the image below, I'm finding it hard to respect him regardless of his number of wins.

Zero chance it's anyone but a former Duke player. Dawkins, Capel, Hurley, Collins, etc. Those are the only people he hires as assistants.

Some interesting things I see in this thread. One, K is responsible for the obvious double standard and favoritism from the NCAA toward Duke. Presumably he should have, like all other coaches, lobbied the NCAA for harsher treatment of his players and program. Two, he apparently harrangues and badgers game officials. Presumably he should, like all other decent coaches, spend the game congratulating officials for calls well made, or ignore them altogether. Three, he apparently bears responsibility for the fact that the "college basketball community and media" don't respect Cal enough. Presumably he should make it a point of emphasis to lobby those groups on behalf of Cal.

Admit it. You don't like him because he gets too much love from the media, because there's a perception that he gets away with stuff the NCAA wouldn't allow of others (especially Cal) and because it seems like he intimidates refs and gets favorable calls. None of that is on him - or, at the least, he's no different in his actions than any other coach. Like in most instances, the hate here is irrational...

But it's sports! So I get it. I really dislike Bill Belichick and Tom Brady for reasons that would not withstand scrutiny.....

Actually, I think what most people are doing here is countering the claim that K won 1000 games "with class". This guy is as classless as they come, and this thread shows why.

He had TONS of help along the way, let's not forget that...

I agree as well. Well, I won't say he's Classless.. but he certainly hasn't don't anything to prove he's not. Always yelling at the refs before his own players. Never doing halftime interviews. And being all giddy after a win to the point that you talk about the other team, WITH the other team, is not class. Sorry.

I guess classless was a bit extreme, but indeed not as "classy" as the media would love to make us think.

The K defense

They've all got their faults, reasons why we don't like them. K, Smith, Wooden, Knight, Beoheim. I can think of lots of reasons for all of them. K has always seemed to get more calls during games than he deserves. I'm sure that's just my personal envy of duke' s success clouding my judgment. But, damn!, Ty Jones walked a mile on that big and-one near the end of the st. John's game.

I see your Scheyer, and raise you a McRoberts.

Spoiler Alert - Not called either

Congrats to you coach K, you were the first to get to 1000 wins.... From a cat fan, congrats to you and family.... You've done some class acts in front of UK fans, and I remember a lot of them... We've really got onto you over the years, but what it comes down to, is it that you're a great coach.... 1,000 big ones.... Keep on trucking K....

Seeing as he will not see this, and you know that, what exactly is the purpose of posting this here? Just to say look at me and how gracious I am?

Funny that it's conveniently ignored that the same thing was done for Lute Olson and Rick Majerus for games in which they missed due to injury, illness or death in the family.

But hey it is a UK board and I don't expect any more objectiveness here than the stuff I've seen on Carolina boards. (As No coach has ever done anything in the sport outside of Lexington and Chapel Hill.)

Funny you didn't address K throwing Parker under the bus in the Mercer post-game last season.

Does he plan on patronizing another double-digit seed when Duke gets upset this year, radiating his glorious persona in the opposing locker room?
