This AM, on the local TV, they were running a poll asking viewers to decide: What are you more interested in, Big Blue Madness tonight, or the UK vs. Georgia football game tomorrow?

I will post the results a few lines below, but tbh, WTF kind of question is that, uh, first preseason basketball practice, or the nationally televised no. 1 ranked team in the country, with College Game Day on hand, vs. an undefeated no. 11 ranked UK team off to their best start in 71 years??

Naturally, the final result was 93-7 in favor of the football game, but what made it even more laughable was that the local broadcaster said he was totally surprised, "here in basketball country, I sure was not expecting that result." He must not get outside the studio very much, I guess.

I guess tomorrow's poll will be "Which do you prefer, warm sunny days, or cold, windy days with icy rain?"

I love the basketball program but I won’t watch a second of Big Blue Madness. I went once when I was a student there and thought it was boring. It’s even worse on TV. It’s a practice. I don’t understand the hype it gets, but to each their own. I know all of my hobbies aren’t loved by everyone else. If you love BBM, have a blast tonight.

How long has the WLEX anchor been around town? Since Cutler signed off? He did sign off, right? If the present anchor came in from out of town, he just subscribes to the "hoops school" trope. Better wise up, or he'll alienate his audience.

Not specific to the poll, but overall, fandom of the BBN has been transitioning to football more and more every year. Personally, 15 years ago, I was an 75% basketball, 25% football fan. It’s totally opposite now. Still root on both, but I never miss a football game and probably miss or only see a portion of half of the basketball games now. The perfect storm of Stoops establishing a solid program and roster turnover in basketball just not my thing.

I haven’t been this excited for a football game since this past Saturday night!

God I used to get into BB Madness when I was younger. In my early 20’s I’d drive 6 hours and spend a lot of money to be there. During the back end of the Cal era I began to care less to the point where I couldn’t care less. Having the women participate is one of the problems, but then again, it’s just a glorified practice.

That’s a really bad poll.

Don’t really understand one way or the other.

I’ve always been 100% UK basketball and 100% UK football. No other team in the SEC is forced to make a choice like UK fans.

Just win in both, and add baseball into it as well.

I’m not choosing between the two. I’ve just lost some interest in college basketball in general over the years and in the process have really grown to love college football. That trend is the same with UK. I’m not choosing between the two (could have explained it better than percentages), just know that I get much more excited for UK football these days than basketball.

I agree totally, boring as hell.

I'm the same. Whether its Cal and his intentional revolving door or the crappy product on the floor, I rarely even watch basketball anymore. I think people thought basketball was immortal at UK but its dying a slow death right now. I haven't watched madness in years.

I never could get into BBM even when I was a kid I thought it was boring. Now I have attended a few Blue/White games back in the day but it's been well over a decade. I've always loved all things UK, but I've got to admit I haven't watched an entire basketball game since 2015. I just can't get into it. College basketball in general is just a hot garbage product. I still hope they win it every year, but it's just not an entertaining product. Now football games, on the other hand, I never miss a game. I've faked sick to miss family events just to watch the CATS play football.

I've never understood this thinking either, I"M DAMN UK FAN!
Loving all things UK is okay. Of course, after one BBM event, I was good for a lifetime. The only thing it is useful for is introducing the new squad to everyone. None of it shows off any game-time reality. Might as well be an AAU game.

I don't feel the need to choose between the two. I can't wait for Big Blue Madness and I can't wait for the UGA game. Comparison os the thief of joy, I choose to enjoy both sports. I'm not sure why this is so difficult?

You can be fans of both. Just a choice.
In football, there is a bigger sense of urgency in each game. Lose 4 games, you're likely to go to a decent bowl game. You lose 4 games in basketball all season, you're gonna be a two or three seed.

A real practice would be more entertaining.

It's an awful question in that it pits the programs against one another.

It also shows the disconnect. Like I said in another thread, football is the much more popular UK sport at the moment and it isn't even close. There are tons of reasons, some include performance and attitude of players and staff; others include handling of political/social issues.

The notion they were shocked at the general outcome shows how utterly clueless they are. I am personally shocked the outcome is that lopsided, but I guess it makes sense considering this year they had give away bbm tickets to call it a sellout and coach cal had to tweet asking fans to show up

Haven’t watched it since they included the women. Nothing against the women’s team, I like watching their games, but have no interest in watching them shoot 3’s and dance.

The Blue-White game is 1,000 times better. But for some reason, didn’t get the crowd. I’ve always been baffled about that.

Our football team is playing the biggest game since Coach Stoops has been here. There is NO COMPARISON in the 2 events!!!! I’ve waited 40 years for a UK Football game like this!!!

Yeah I dont want to throw water on it for those who like it but to me its just one of those things that ran its course a LONG time ago. You tune in and see a bunch of canned hype then a loose YMCA scrimmage and I end of changing the channel about 10 minutes in each time.

I think it lost its appeal to recruits as well as its been a long time since any recruit signed and said "yeah I was just blown away with BBMadness". Although that did used to happen quite a bit early on when it was fresh and we were one of the only ones doing it.

The point made by the OP was how stupid it is for WLEX to run this poll while we’re 6-0 and getting ready to play one of the biggest games in UK football history. This in itself is the main reason a lot of SEC will always view us as a bball school. The media in our state has a huge opportunity to run with something special and they want to talk about a bball practice; dumb as hell.

I don't care how big of a UK basketball fan you are...you have to admit that BBM totally sucks, has for many many years now. I still can't believe people care about getting tix to go. JMO but it is often a corny borefest that played itself out two decades ago.

I could be wrong, but it seems once ESNPU/SEC Network started airing BBM, it really tanked.

Yes and much of that is on cal. For years I went religiously but the last several years Cal took the position he didn't want his players going through it due to risk of injury. So now it's skits, speeches, and dances; ending with players jogging around for a few minutes.

Compare that to the football players leaving for the draft but still playing hard as hell in the bowl games. Noone even pressures them to play, it's just a product of the coaching environment.

One is a player first coach. The other is a players' coach but program/family first. People pick up on that and it makes a difference

That's how much Stoops has changed UK

In years past, that poll would've been flipped the other way. One of my buddies said, if you give a "basketball school" a good football team, that school will become a "football school".

Football is just a more fun, strategy ridden game.

That reporter has to be clueless to be surprised by the poll. Football team undefeated and ranked 11 playing the number 1 team vs a glorified basketball practice, and he’s surprised.

I generally don’t get caught up in BB recruiting in the off-season like many folks do, but I have generally watched BBM to meet the new players and get hyped for the upcoming season. Couple years ago he paid tribute to Joe B Hall and other old timers and it was really cool.

Didn’t watch it last year (did we even have it?) and don’t plan on watching it tonight; the wife and I are going to see the new James Bond movie.

I'm as die hard a basketball fan as there is but at this point I couldn't care less about BBM. I'm sure I'll have it on later as background noise but it's all football right now.
