conference realignment rumors

The ACC isn't a sinking ship looking to add mid-major schools to expand their conference in order to keep them afloat.
Not arguing that they are. You were talking about how weak the Big12 is without Oklahoma and Texas. I am doing the same with FSU and Miami.

Gotcha.

But the rest of the ACC programs/markets are stronger, IMHO. Better "brands" and better markets.

Syracuse gives them New York. The Orange are probably the biggest college program for that state (which has a fairly large population, I believe).

Boston College gives them Boston, another huge market and BC has some history in football.

GT has history and the Atlanta market.

Pitt gives them another strong market and is a fairly strong football school.

VT is a strong football school and along with UVA gives them a stranglehold on the Virginia market.

The North Carolina schools give them the Charlotte area markets.

Clemson is a fairly strong football school historically speaking. The market isn't huge, though.

UofL is a bit of a head scratcher. They have some basketball tradition. The market is weak, though. I guess the "brand" is strong nationally speaking. So they are the weakest link and they are consistently getting to bowls in football.

The Big 12 has:

KU- weak market, but is a name brand. Weak football.

K-State- same market as KU, weaker brand. A little stronger football tradition.

Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU- overshadowed in their markets by Texas and A&M. Not much in the way of tradition. Not strong brands.

Iowa St.- second fiddle to Iowa in their market. Not much of a brand.

WVU- pretty good football and basketball tradition, but a weak market. Decent branding.

Oklahoma St.- aside from T. Boone's money, what is the upside there? The Sooners dominate that state.

So how does the conference expand their footprint without watering things down? There is no good answer for the Big 12.

Even the KU fan that posted in this thread said they were in trouble.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy the whole Big 12 is better or even equals the ACC. The ACC is pulling away in the race for fourth place among the P5 conferences.

Like Ul? Your a joke.

That makes for a good argument. UofL offers very little, IMHO.

But you failed to mention the other additions: Syracuse and Pitt.

Or Notre Dame in everything but football (which was a move to try to get the most coveted football program out there into their conference).

Those were very good pickups when it comes to markets and programs.

I hear the Pac-10 is after St John's, the Big East is after Gonzaga, the SEC is after Michigan, and the ACC after Utah.
