Column: is Auburn too dirty to win it all?

I think Auburn can win it all. Their versatility, size, speed and depth make them a difficult matchup for everyone. Losing back to back games has at least some potential to derail then chemistry-wise but outside of that, I still believe they are the best team in the country. I’d be surprised if Auburn doesn’t at minimum reach the Elite Eight.

Pearl has only made 1 Sweet 16 in his time at Auburn. I would not be surprised to see UK go further than them in the NCAA. Florida is currently playing the best ball in the SEC right now imo. Alabama has loads of potential to make a deep run if they can cut turnovers out.

Auburn has all the pieces to be a final four team. Unfortunately some of those parts are busted mentally. Baker - Mazara is 25 years old and is an immature asshole on the court. Pearl will have to find someway to manage his attitude.

Matchups in the tournament will be one part of what determines their future. A stud center gives them some issues.

Another part will be the way the games are called. Teams from the SEC are used to a wrestling style of game. If the tournament is called differently then they will need to adjust. If they can't, then they are done early.

They beat UK to go the the F4 in 2019……
I know. Maybe I should have worded it differently. That's the only season he made it to the Sweet 16 on his way to a F4. Other than that outlier, they haven't made another Sweet 16 (or further) since he's been coaching there.

Don’t remind me. That was the real beginning of the end with Cal. That was also the game where fans mocked their injured player and they wheeled him out to the court to watch us lose.

You’d think we’d have learned not to mock or boo since then but no.

That game more than any other loss outside of 2015 pisses me off the most. I was mad at our boys, Cal, Pearl, our fans, pretty much everyone.

That team is a reflection of the coach. But a punk like Baker Mazara, well ..... even that I can't lay on Pearl. Punk is what punk does. And that's why they lost the game against Alabama, and why they'll lose in the NCAA tournament.

I take a lot of pleasure watching Auburn lose ever since 2019, and only then did I ever care to see them lose. They earned it.

I think they very well could win it all.

But if they lose, it'll be all the "crap." They flop a lot and beg for fouls. They got the calls in Rupp. They won't get them 6 straight games in the NCAA tournament. At some point, you have to out-basketball your opponent. Not just outsmart the refs.

Baker Mazara getting ejected for an elbow to the back of the head before they lose a Final 4 caliber game highlights the issue. They're supremely talented. They do a lot of stupid, extra, unnecessary stuff. Take that out, and they maybe beat Alabama.

That game is def on Cal for turning it into a rock fight when we were up double digits in the first half by getting out in transition. But Auburn magically didn't commit a foul the last 9 minutes. Total bullshit.

Oh that game is on everyone. Cal, the refs, our dudes, their dudes, our fans. Hence why I said what I did. I've never got done with a game pissed off at everyone as much as that game. Even the Whisky loss didn't make me as mad as that one (Whisky was more of a depression than anything.)

If we had won that game, Cal is still here IMO.

What if we'd won that game and then a title? Virginia won it. Auburn stupidly fouled on a 3 pointer with less than a second to go or they'd of won. I'd take a title and put up with Cal another 6-7 years. And who knows, those years could've been totally different in that alternate timeline.

At minimum we've got another final four banner. Say results were the same after he'd prob still be gone or would've been after this season. And Pope would almost certainly still become our coach. Crazy to think about huh?

We needed one stop in that game. The refs didn’t call an Auburn foul the last 9 minutes of that game, and still we needed one stop with like 40 seconds left snd we would have won.
