Coen was Overrated

You mean the Iowa game were we had a mash unit pieced together OLINE? And playing one of the Top rated D's in the Country?

Success based on W's and L's wow that's an odd way to grade a team.

On that mash ol, 2 guys that rotated at LT were both consistently destroyed by the Iowa de. Both those guys started at tackle for us this year.

So I think you inadvertently defeated your own point. OL was a major issue most all year. You had to know we were in trouble when flax started the season at any position

Well in fairness that Iowa oline last year was what this one looked like this year
That is a remarkable and true observation that had not fully occurred to me.

Heck, we surrendered 8 sacks to Iowa.

And defeated a Top 15 team who had ten wins under their belt!!

Coen and Wandale touched that game!!

If Coen was overrated in 2021, how much would it cost to have him overrated, here, in 2023?

Atleast 50% of the fanbase wants Coen back. He mustve done something right.

Only 50? I'd say 90+. Fans can simultaneously think he was great while also not being fool enough to think he was without flaws.

Just because some of us aren't reduce to simple binary, doesn't mean we don't want him if we can get him. He is just a super long shot

I tend to think Coen was growing into a fine college OC.
I also tend to think he may be in over his head now.
Bill you do realize he does not call plays in LA? Also I’m sure you know the QB & the best receiver in NFL are not playing- thought so

Not necessarily a long shot. Justin is cautiously optimistic on the House board (I hope that is not crossing the line by mentioning that).

LOL NO that was my point, going BACK to OP and Coen he did a damn great job with what he had to work with in the Iowa game LAST YEAR IN BOWL GAME that he referenced.

We were ranked 37th in the nation in offense. Not great but certainly not overrated.
Part of that is tempo - we were 18th in the country in yards per play but only 47th in total offense (36th in scoring offense). We were also hurt badly by turnovers - tied for 10th worst in the country (tied with 17 other teams).

You can point to games like Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Florida last year where our offense was less than stellar. Iowa we actually scored 1 more than their average points against so I'm not including it as a negative (nor as a positive). But then you have games against LSU, Tennessee, Missouri, and Louisville where our offense was good to great.

Biggest problem was consistency. Great one game and not very good another

Imagine having even less than that, plus the QB with a bum leg and bum shoulder to boot. All season long. With no spring for install.

Coen is better. There's no doubt. Scang just got a bad deal from fans. The offense faced all kinds of challenges. Play calling was low on the list

Could the OP please name all the OCs at UK who has had higher ranked offenses than him?
And he also had the best product to work with. I am not arguing that he had one of the best Kentucky offenses of the past 20 years. He did, and that is kinda sad. But our offensive talent has been pretty bad over the last 20 years. What I am arguing…….. that with A really good offensive line, and hungry and healthy Levis, as well as Wandale Robinson……. I just feel as though he could of done a little better. I use the word overrated, because everyone is acting like he was some great OC. On top of all of this….. I can’t remember how many times Wandale turned nothing into something on screen plays. He had that ability with footwork and tackle breaking ability. I really think people forget about problems when teams win games. What about if Levis don’t fumble against Ole MiSs, or he plays against South Carolina. What about if our field Goal kicking situation was better this year. All I am saying, is that I remember struggles Coen had. I think people forget because of our wins and losses. I think people had a love affair with him because he came from Super Bowl winning Rams. He was the sexy hire. Rams aren’t looking good this year. I am not saying he was horrible, but I don’t know if scag was horrible either. Not saying he is great either. I just don’t think he had as good of horse in the race. People act like they had the same level of product to work with

That’s a reasonable response. Although I do believe he would have had more wins this year, I truely believe that. I am not as smart about football as many on this board and I openly admit that. But from an amateur set of eyes, it seems our offense was very predictable and no real progress through the season. In fact, one could argue the offense regressed some in some of the things they were doing. It seemed very easy to predict UK would ram it up the middle on 1st and 2nd and either ram or pass on 3rd, then punt on 4th. Blitz all game and you’ll get to know Levis personally. Maybe it was the difference in NFL/College cultural thing but halfway through the season you would have thought it was as obvious to all that scouted UK. UK can do better than that, hell I’d rather have air raid over that even though C Rod was a rock star. So yeah if my choice is Coen or repeat of last year with less talent and God knows what quality QB this coming year, for the Love of God give me Coen or someone similar.

What does that have to do with our Oline not at full strength going against a top Dline that Iowa had.
It means that giving Coen a pass for that game and not Scangarello this year is inconsistent thinking. And I’m not saying that because I dislike Coen or that Scangarello didn’t have some problems. I do agree with the premise that Coen has been deified. We forget how bad some of those games last year were too.

This is my line of thinking too. We have generally been rudderless offensively and while stoops has done a good job of program building here he has to get that fixed. It’s what keeps us from taking a real swing at something. I just don’t think he knows how to proceed. How he prefers to play offensively and defensively is comfortable for him but he’s also aware that it isnt really how the game gets played today. So there’s this constant push and pull with how we try to proceed on that side of the ball. He’s trying to manage both what he wants to do with narrative.

Last year we scored one td vs Florida. Looked awful vs sc and MSU. Looked pretty good vs a then weak Mizzou defense. Looked great vs LSU and ut. Thats it.

There's the link for the stats. Levis and the passing game was mediocre at best. It was all the ol, crod, and QB run. Also we had a major drop off and those teams (especially vandy, sc, and Mizzou) and major upgrades.

It's all revisionist history mostly influenced by the reintroduction of a competent (not good) passing game and a very charismatic guy
Becaue that was all we had. This your he would have 3 legit WR's to scheme to, and a few TEs but still only Crod to run the ball. But 3 Wr's running wild on the field would probably open up some running lanes.

And 8th on RZ offense. For comparison we were 130something this year. We averaged around 35 points last season; this season is was 23ish (returning QB and arguably the best RB in school history with significantly more WR weapons). Had we averaged 25pts our only loss would have been at UT

And a significantly worse OL, faltering fg unit, 4 games without crod, and a QB that was injured. You can't compare last year to this one. There really is no comparison.

Coen is better than scang and considerably better than him in the red zone. That said, we were taking a dip this season regardless. We owe a very competent oc over 2 million to go away so we can have the 4th oc in 4 years. We need to get this right and it needs to be for a few years

I think coen is underrated. He brought in Levis. And had a hand in the receiver corpse brought in this year. If there had been continuity we would have had a great season. Levis wouldn’t have been stuck in the pocket and I think he fixes the oline. If you guys are looking for a let it rip run and gun offensive guy it’s not happening. That a recipe for some fun high scoring games but not winning, not yet. We aren’t at that level defensively where we can afford to have 2-3:00 drives then put our D back on the field. The depth especially Dline depth isn’t there.

You don't win 10 games last season being one of the worst teams in the country in turnover margin with a mediocre OC. Imagine if UK took care of the ball and caused more turnovers last season.

It amazing how the last drive of the Iowa game, where Wandale took over…… leaves everyone with a positive take on Coen. Our offense was horrible all game up till that point. That is as with him just missing a left tackle. Looking back at it, I really think the guy under achieved. Our Oline and running back was as good as anyone in the country last year. Throw in a NFL starting WR. We should of had a better offense than we had. People always judge success by wins and loses. When grading someone’s performance, you must consider what they had to work with. Just my opinion!!!
Do you think Rich had a bare cupboard?

Problem with Coen is he isn’t available and even if he’s on the chopping block unless he leave mid season he can’t be hired until Jan. That’s past early signing day and the transfer portal. Can’t wait that long!

To me the biggest reason for bringing back Coen was his ability to keep Stoops in his lane and out of the offense. Calling Coen overrated is a stretch considering how poor our receivers were with the exception of Wandale but he did walk into a great situation with the oline and CRod, and brought Levis in. Would have been interesting to see how he worked with all these receivers. Maybe we will find out next year

As a 49ers fan I was smiling and so glad the Rams hired him for OC. I knew he was trash and knew my Niners would take over after that!
Were you smiling Saturday evening as your favorite team lost to their arch rival for the fourth straight time, yet managed to keep it sort of respectable this time?
