Coen was Overrated

It amazing how the last drive of the Iowa game, where Wandale took over…… leaves everyone with a positive take on Coen. Our offense was horrible all game up till that point. That is as with him just missing a left tackle. Looking back at it, I really think the guy under achieved. Our Oline and running back was as good as anyone in the country last year. Throw in a NFL starting WR. We should of had a better offense than we had. People always judge success by wins and loses. When grading someone’s performance, you must consider what they had to work with. Just my opinion!!!

He was both great and overrated. Many UK fans forget all the struggles vs sec competition. He didn't get it figured out either until end of the season despite having way more to work with

He was way more charismatic which I think made a difference blending with the staff and players and I know made a difference in how he was viewed by fans.

We were ranked 37th in the nation in offense. Not great but certainly not overrated.

I literally don’t remember the last drive In the Iowa game. What I do remember was a creative offense that was well disguised and utilized play action. I liked it.

Some of the dumbest takes are on sports boards...you qualify was top one today.

1. Iowa game...you might want to remember our startling LG played tackles and brand new guard.
2. 32 pts a game....37th scoring offense and he under achieved? THe year before that team was 21 pts a game. We had the exact same team on offense with the exception of Wandale, Rosenthal and Levis. So did those three make that much of a difference? Or maybe the coaching was pretty damn good stuff.
3. The NFL WR....was a 2nd round pick. He's caught 23 balls, 227 yards and 1 TD. I love Wandale but let's not act like he is Randy Moss.
4. UK had a good Oline....but as good as anyone in the country? Fortner was 3rd round pick Kinnard was 5th round. Rosenthal ddn't get drafted. Very good Oline but not a top 10 Oline in college.

It will be a subjective debate for sure.....but Scang was handed CROd, Levis and 3 damn good WR. To put up that crappy of a year with all of that handed to you more than deserves a pink slip. And Coen was a damn good OC.

Yes we were as good on the OL as anyone. Wandale was a beast. Catching 104 passes was insane. He was both an insanely good route runner and a threat to go to the house every time.

The same two guys we saw get abused in the Iowa game (flax and horsey) were the starting tackles this season. That's a massive difference in talent.

The question isnt what coen did last year. It's what he would've done this year. It would've been much the same. In fact the sec scoring stats don't even look that different despite a massive talent advantage last year.

Coen did a fantastic job here but sure, it wasn't a perfect season offensively by any stretch. Its helps that we had Wandale Robinson but most teams with any kind of success have a major playmaker. What I think puts Coen in KY football lore is that he was the first OC to actually look decent out there. We could actually throw the ball and averaged north of 400 yards....something that still has only happened during Coen's lone season here.

Our offenses under Stoops have been garbage and fortunately he is a hard nosed coach and we at least were able to do 3 yards and cloud of dust to scrape up 6 wins here and there.

Coen doesnt deserve any negativity and is certainly not overrated, but I would say that our offensive success in probably overstated by the fans in how good we actually were on a national scale.

Of course it doesnt help that Coen's offense is the worst in the NFL this year.

I don’t think people understand how valuable a good offensive line is. 5 offensive linemen make up almost half of your offensive players. People act like, offensive linemen are plug and play: I guess because they don’t get to touch the ball, they aren’t that important. Be like building a house with a crap foundation.

Yes, that was a great offensive line last year. I don’t know what rating said, I just know what I seen with my own eyes. I seen a group that controlled the line of scrimmage consistently. Do you know how many times Levis was sacked this year? Not to mention we were without CROD for a while. I would like to see anyone try and call plays with a line like that. If it was so easy to scheme around…… what would be the need to have a good Oline. Look at the NFL right now, 2 of the top teams have 2 of the best OLines (Phil and KC). Remember a couple years ago when Mahomes and Rodger’s had no time against Tampa’s Dline. Those OC’s should of just schemed around it. What about Burrows first year with Bengals….. or Couch's career with Cleveland. Some peoples knowledge of football starts and stops with skill position players 🤦‍♂️

Not to mention Coen had a fearless and healthy Levis. As excited as I am about all 3 of our top WR now. They were young and just learning the postion. Wandale was absolutely a stud with tons of experience.

I tend to think Coen was growing into a fine college OC.
I also tend to think he may be in over his head now.
Coen doesn't call plays in LA. The Rams' injury situation on the offensive unit is pretty bad. Respectfully, I think it is a mistake to judge Coen's coordinator skills by the 2022 season in LA. Granted, the Rams are not very good. But there are a lot of issues, and most are outside of Coen's control.

I would be glad to take Coen back as our OC, and I think the chances of that happening are nonzero. I don't have a clue if that would satisfy Stoops' thinking at this point. But first year NFL coordinators don't make much money. Coen left significant money on the table when he left UK. He must be having second thoughts. Bringing him back might be a good solution for all parties. Especially if Coen can entice a QB out of the portal. Just conjecture at this point, though.

You mean the Iowa game were we had a mash unit pieced together OLINE? And playing one of the Top rated D's in the Country?

Success based on W's and L's wow that's an odd way to grade a team.

I wouldnt say over-rated because I loved the guys potential. Ive said before he had his struggles too last year and no question Wandale bailed us out a lot of times. And I remember being a little frustrated with some play calling at times and even Liam himself called himself out on that, . . . but that said I also followed that up every time with the fact I loved the guys attitude and potential and thought was disapointed when he left because I thought he was going to have on helluva soph campaing at OC. First year's are for learning and getting your feet wet.

So I agree there is maybe a litte more rosie picture of his first year than reality but I'd take him back in a heartbeat.

Well in fairness that Iowa oline last year was what this one looked like this year

I wouldn’t say Coen struggled against SEC competition. Taking away the returned blocked FG against Florida, we averaged 26.5 points in our first 4 SEC games. 13 against UGA (with a blocked XP and blocked FG) was not horrible considering their historic defense.

Last year we scored one td vs Florida. Looked awful vs sc and MSU. Looked pretty good vs a then weak Mizzou defense. Looked great vs LSU and ut. Thats it.

There's the link for the stats. Levis and the passing game was mediocre at best. It was all the ol, crod, and QB run. Also we had a major drop off and those teams (especially vandy, sc, and Mizzou) and major upgrades.

It's all revisionist history mostly influenced by the reintroduction of a competent (not good) passing game and a very charismatic guy

You made many good points, but the above was the best. I dont have the stats but i vaguely remember our pass protection being “average” at best?!

Remember that was his first year in the SEC…. I’d say he was adjusting pretty well all things considered…

Looking really good versus half of our SEC opponents is a unique thing for Kentucky’s offense over the last 15 years.

Yes, it was ugly vs SC and Florida. What I remember about the MSU game is we had seemingly 5 or 6 turnovers so hard to look good when that happens.

I’m not saying he was the second coming but considering where UK was before him it is not revisionist to say he was a very good OC. We jumped substantially in scoring offense in his one year.

This. Our OLine this year versus last year was radically different. I am assuming that had a large impact on the offensive performance, thus overall record, this year versus last year.

The charismatic part is it. He was the kind of guy kids want to play for. He brought in the offensive recruits that tore it up this year. If he had stayed UK would have a qb commit RN. He was great for recruiting

The thread's title is a hot take, but I do think a decent (and honest) question would be could Coen have done better with this year's offense than Scan?

I think the answer is yes, but I also don't think it would have been as good as last year. So much this year seemed to hinge on Levis' injuries and OL which Coen would have had issues with too.

I think Coen > Scan, but I also think whoever was going to be the OC this year was dealt a tough hand.

Iowa was an elite defense. I guarantee we wouldn’t have only scored 6 points vs that sorry ass UT defense. He wasn’t perfect but we averaged 32 a game. When’s the last time that happened here ??
