This is the third possession of BYU's game at Kansas last season. Last night we showed the pick and roll on the second possession. Out of a side-out BYU shows a flex-cut along the baseline to the ball-side. The would be screener slips the screen, and instead cuts to the top off a stagger screen. Remember that the two dominant looks are the stagger away from the ball, and Zoom on the ball-side. There is a ball exchange back and forth as the second cutter from the opposite side comes off a Aly Khalifa screen. It looks kind of obvious that Trevin Knell isn't sure about what to do. A guard to guard ball-screen is not the desired action, but is turns out not to be an issue. The guards all cut through, and the overloaded side of the floor changes from right to left which is what Mark Pope wanted. Now the left side is cleared from the ball-screen. Pope already knows from the opening possessions that Kansas is going to switch. This creates a big on little mismatch. Khalifa clears out of the way to let Dallin Hall work on Hunter Dickinson out on the floor. He blows by him to the rim. Also notice the position exchange between the wing and corner during the drive. This occupies the help side. It is also obvious that Kansas is not going to leave shooters. The shooting presence creates space for the drive. That is factor to remember for next season.
