CI Wrestling Thread #56

And WWE just called up for NXT women that are better than her in Perez, Giulia, Vaquer, and Grace. Brining in Mariah May who is also better.

Got several women still down in NXT that are also better.

At some point she is going to have to learn how to do more than just look good and aura farm.

I think at this point WWE has kind of made it obvious they know she doesn't have what it takes to reach the level they thought she could but don't want to admit the mistake they made in signing her. Been with the company for about 1.75 years and only has five broadcasted singles matches.

I would expand the list to include...
  • Kenny Omega - Unlikely he leaves as I think he likely retires or goes special attraction part timer at conclusion of current contract
  • Young Bucks - Unlikely they leave as I think they are probably retiring after current contract expires
  • Darby Allin - Obviously extremely unlikely
  • Kyle Fletcher - Everyone knows he's the next big thing
  • Toni Storm - This doesn't even need explanation, but also very unlikely she leaves
I'd even argue that Toni Storm would THE biggest loss of all of them from a perception standpoint.

Well to be fair this is her make or break time - only recently have they featured her in singles matches. Before that she tagged with Bianca then did some acting gig.

Jade is limited but can be booked as a special attraction and put on a poster with a few others and that sells. WWE doesn't need match of the decade every month.

Swerve - maybe if he's 41-42 with a goal of main eventing Mania before retiring.
Page - WWE would rather have Logan Paul. Paul can do what Page does and casts a much larger social media net.
Ospreay - would have to move to America. That's about it.
Willow - will be in WWE. Don't see her as ride or die with either company.
Mercedes - Yes. We know that's coming at some point.
MJF - 100%. AEW was his launching pad but probably realized WWE is stacked at the moment so he re-signed.
Omega - would be a holy shit moment but his bump card is about full.
Bucks - would be another holy shit moment. Don't see it unless AEW folded in the next few years.
Moxley - No. Probably has no desire for Shield teases and not being able to control his own storylines which always include shit from dumpsters and blood.
Toni Storm - No. Her Goldust-like gimmick wouldn't work in current WWE imo. Fans got annoyed with Rollins and his joker laugh and gave no reaction to biker vikings. They wouldn't ride with a wrestling actress in b&w constantly referencing her boobs and pretending she's in the 1950s.

I’m normally in the neighborhood (within a quarter of a star) of Dave for AEW ratings but a 4.5 is quite the outlier for that FTR match. I think I gave it a 7 or 7.5 on a 10-point scale, so a 4.5 would be a 9 on that scale.

It was a good match but definitely not the same level as the women’s Owen, Okada, or Stretcher matches.

I don’t see Swerve going back as long as Triple H has power there. He pretty notably hates Triple H. If shit were to hit the fan with AEW, he’d probably just go the Matt Cardona route and make a ton of money doing indies instead of going back to the WWE. Matt Cardona has said he makes more money doing what he’s doing now than he did working in the WWE. But Swerve is also worth more money to WWE than what Cardona would be now or back when Zack Ryder was a thing.

Speaking of AEW I think collision was taped and will be on after the nba game tonight! So prob 1030-11 eastern roughly.
Probably closer to 11:30, especially if the Pacers win because that’s means tonight is the last game on TNT. That’s going to be a LONG postgame show if they go back to the studio for that.

WWE Evolution 2 is official, and we’ve gained some reactions from within the company.

The initial announcement was largely rumored, but almost every member of the WWE women’s roster told us that they officially learned of the show when it was announced publicly. There were some exceptions, with at least some top talent, and one legend being made aware of the show, with said legend possibly being booked.

The reaction internally was actually mixed. There were some on the roster who understand what the show means, but took exception with the “curtain call” element of the first show, noting that it wasn’t something WWE would have had men on the roster do. Another said that if the show underperforms against a Beyonce concert next door and hotel prices likely increased, it’ll be used as the catalyst to justify not doing it again.

One top talent we spoke with felt like the company has too many PLEs as is, and isn’t quite sure what they’ll do here.

One veteran expressed their excitement and said hopefully many of the women that don’t get used often get an opportunity to shine. They also said they’re hoping that legends can be integrated with the newer talent to help build things. The talent specified WWE has to help build it for it to be a success.

There was certainly less excitement regarding this show, but much of that had to do with the general booking for the majority of the division of late and the manner of which the roster found out

Yup you’re right and pacers looking like they’ll win so it’ll be around that time and since it’s at home they’ll do the trophy presentation and all that too.

I guess he could strip away the dummy gimmick, have a last run in TNA, then get a Legends deal. If that happens, and TKO hasn't limited who gets those deals, Truth would still make random appearances occasionally and maybe host Mania or something down the road.

On one hand, every wrestler and fan loves him, he likely helps keep morale up within the company and always gets a great reaction. On the other hand, he was off tv for a long time, did stuff with Miz, Judgment Day, and Cena, has made lots of money from small backstage segments and very short matches here and there, and there's not a lot more you can do with the character. He was on Busted Open after he returned and basically said he didn't think he'd be brought back. That's when they came up with the Judgment Day stuff I think.

I don't love it but it is what it is. As awful as Vince is, I actually think he would've re-signed him.

Despite the fact that R-Truth is 53, he was looked at as a "WWE lifer" my many, but doesn't appear to be the case. Fightful Select's Sean Ross Sapp has confirmed that Truth was contacted by a talent relations employee this weekend and informed that his contract would not be extended as it is expiring. Based on those we spoke to, he was told that he hadn't been in trouble and did nothing wrong. A number of talent spoke with him following the news to check on him, and that everyone seemed confused by the news, including Truth himself.

The reaction from the roster was unlike anything we've covered -- despite covering hundreds of releases and departures. The departure was met with complete shock and disbelief, with one top talent calling it "total nonsense." Another called this regime "ruthless." It's by far the most criticized and universally disliked departure we've covered. Throughout Fightful's 9 years of existence, we've never had a backstage source speak ill, or anything less than glowingly of Truth.

R-Truth also had one of the top selling WWE shirts in recent weeks with the "Ron Cena" shirt.

While the "R-Truth" name has been one used within WWE, he's used Ron "The Truth" Killings outside of WWE when working in NWA and TNA in previous years. An interesting element is that there's a very good chance that Ron Killings owns the rights to his theme song, which was self produced and he actually used for a couple of years in TNA.

There was immediate interest from top indies regarding booking him and when his contract was up. We're still working to find out exactly when that is.

Since when do they just release 1 wrestler on a random day. I thought they did these things in one fell swope.

WWE becomes more like the UFC with every decision that is made and every word that is spoken by WWE brass. If only there had been people warning fans about it.

TKO literally does not care about anything other than $. They do not care one single iota about what someone has done in the past, if getting rid of them is projected to be more profitable than keeping them then they will do it no matter what the consequences are.

This just shows how poor of a booker Triple H is. How about put some stakes on that Cena vs. R Truth match where if Truth lost then he would have to leave WWE or retire so they could get some actual heel heat on Cena? Nope, let's just made it a forgettable, four-minute throwaway match on Saturday Night's House Show in the continued fumbling of Cena's heel turn and retirement tour.

I will miss R-Truth. A beloved wrestler by the fans. Ron perfects wrestling comedy. Need a guy like him that is good for locker room morale. He still looked good in the ring for someone 53 years old. Deserved a proper send off rather than a Cena squash match and job out to JC Mateo that blindsided the fans who had no idea Friday night was the end of his WWE tenure. Hope to see him show back up for another run in TNA.
