CI Wrestling Thread #56

Okay, I can’t figure out why they are rematching the universally panned Mox v Cope next week. That would have been like WWE rematching Jay v Jimmy after their mess last year. Tony is online all the time so he knows exactly what 90% of us fans are saying. Is this going to be like when the Acclaimed should have went over their first match against Swerve and Keith Lee and pulling the trigger on a title change asap? But would anyone really care if Cope won Wednesday?

I can’t help but think there will be something important coming out of this one. It just seems kind of weird all the way around.
You’re going to find out pal!

I think Tony should book a best of 7 series between Moxley and Copeland. I want ex-WWE talent chaos.

Title needs to come off Moxley but he's still going to be heavily involved with AEW until he retires. Saw a clip of Mox taking a clothesline, falling out of the ring, the camera catches him blading, and he gets back in bleeding. Folks in the comments said it's an obsession or fetish and he's replaced alcohol with blading. TK idolizes ex-WWE talent so they're rarely going to be told no. I think he believes Danielson is his hippie uncle or something.

I probably sound like a 'Rampager' or 'Collider' saying this but NXT is the best show of the week.

This review seems fairly accurate…

I was sick today and wasn't feeling up to it. Of the four matches I was hyped for, I decided the one I would go out of my way for was Mox vs Cope for the world title. I've been hyped for them to go at it since Cope returned, as he is my second favorite wrestler and Mox is Mox.

F*** me for making that decision.

For starters, the crowd. I dunno I've been to livlier funerals. A spear off the apron and a stomp on the concrete earned golf claps, there was maybe one or two chants during the match, and the pops were tiny. I get it was a smaller crowd for a ppv, but it was also LA, which isn't exactly a quiet town.

The match itself moved at a snails pace that can be best described as "slow”.I understand what they were trying to do, but the pacing of this match makes peak "Blandy Borton" (he's so good I hate this was even a thing) look like Will Ospreay. The first five or so minutes was a strike fest, which can work when the crowd is into it. Watching two guys punch each other in the face in a room so quiet you can hear the impacts just ain't it. Cope quite frankly looked like sh** compared to just a year ago when he was TNT champ, and Mox was wrestling like a parody of himself. Deliberately slow, deliberately no selling everything, deliberately methodical.

And then there's the finish. Holy s***. I dunno who Christian pissed off, but they f***ing buried him tonight. And I know that phrase gets overused, but I don't know what else to call it. He cashes in the contract he's held for six months, and then gets dominated by Mox in about four minutes. Like, are you shi**ng me? All that build, all that hype, the fact that Mox didn't have his group, didn't even need to be pinned, and you f**king jobbed Christian out?

Where does this even lead? Cope looks like a broken old man, Mox looks the exact same as he normally does, and Christian looks like a joke. Of course the one guy to come out on top at the end was Will Washington's nepopushed cousin. He probably beats Mox too doesn't he? Ya know, f*** it I don't care if he does, anything to end this abysmal reign.
Anyone who was hyped for Mox vs. Cope needs a mental health evaluation

World title generally should be last, but there are certainly exceptions to be made. Like mania 25. Does ANYONE remember HHH / Orton from that show? Nope, all taker and Michaels
A world title match - men or women - should be last because it should be the best booked thing since it’s the one match that’s always most likely to be the main event in every company.

The thing is that AEW actually had a world title match that was perfectly setup to be the main event - Mariah vs. Toni.

And this isn’t some hindsight is 20/20 BS. It was widely agreed upon all over the internet that it should be the main event. It was a year+ long story that was arguably the most well written story in AEW history.

They deserved it, then they killed it, and many are saying it was the match of the night on the same night we got four matches that on paper are ones that would be a believable PPV main event in Hangman-MJF, Swerve-Ricochet, Omega-Takeshita, and Ospreay-Fletcher.

Might just end up being the first ever American five-star women’s match.

That Cope-Mox match would have been bad no matter where it was on the card. Make it a cool down match earlier in the card or after the tag title match and it would have been a lot more tolerable. But as the main event after a run of three consecutive great matches? That ain’t it.

I thought bayley/sasha was 5 stars?

Was reading earlier Collision next week will air as two one hour episodes. The first on Saturday night after the NCAA Tourney coverage ends and the other hour on Sunday, again after the NCAA Tourney coverage ends.
My “old” ass doesn’t necessarily like it, but it’s smart. Get that big lead-in to increase exposure. And for all the grifters with the keyboard diarrhea takes about AEW, it also shows how much invested WBD is in AEW. They could pick conceivably anything they have the rights for there to get that prime spot, and they are picking AEW both nights.

A street fight is what the first match should have been to begin with. Should be considerably more entertaining than that shit show the first match was.

I’m thinking Jay White turns on Cope. Or at least I am hoping. Jay is fine as a face, he excels as a heel.

Jeff Cobb to WWE?
Maybe. Weird fit. Only thing that makes sense is if they stick him in NXT to beef up that weak men’s roster and just have him make everyone look good in the ring.

Because he’s definitely not a promo guy unless he has a Ricochet-in-AEW type glow up.

So unless that’s the case there’s no future for him on the main roster. Man turns 43 in June. Vast majority of the WWE fan base isn’t going to know a damn thing about him.

It was so whatever we get the sequel on dynamite
I’m not thrilled for the rematch, but at least I am looking forward to this match since it’s a street fight. AEW rarely misses with plunder matches.

My expectation for the PPV match was it could be a decent match and it was the match I was least interested in on the main card.

For me a decent match is an absolute max of 7/10. I think I ended up giving it a 4. Put it middle of the card and I’d probably would have given it a 5.

To piggy back off my previous reply to this…

The only women’s matches Dave has rated 5 or greater, listed in reverse chronological order, since the collapse of the Japanese women’s wrestling scene after 1995
  1. 3/3/25; Saya Kamitani vs. Tam Nakano; Stardom
  2. 2/2/25; AZM, Miyu Amasaki, and Starlight Kid vs. Natsupoi, Saori Anou, and Tam Nakano; Stardom
  3. 6/12/21; Syuri vs. Utami Hayashishita; Stardom
Yes, just three women’s five star matches in the last 30 years after the collapse of All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling following the owners going bankrupt in 1997.

It took well over a decade for the Joshi wrestling scene to recover from the aftermath, and the only other place doing much of anything with women’s wrestling was the USA with the diva bullshit

Dralistico/Hologram got 4.5 stars so that’s as good as Sasha/bayley - this is why even wrestlers make fun of his ratings.
If a match takes place in Japan and features Japanese talent, it’s a minimum of 4.25 for ole Dave. He’s always has this odd Japan fetish and tends to overrate anything that happens on Japanese soil.

They need to bring back raw underground for this…

[WON] A specific confrontation saw Jade Cargill pointing to a bruise on her arm and her telling Shayna Baszler that she needed to learn how to work. Baszler responded: "If I was shooting, you and I would both know."

😂 at getting pissed off because you got a bruise in a wrestling match. She has been pampered way too much in her wrestling career.

First show ever with three five star matches

But damn Dave really didn’t like the tag match 😂

Just like I knew it would end up being. No wonder WWE is having to beg indies on social media to book them. They saw what WWE did to the UK and aren’t going to put up with their shit.

WWE just trying to make the indies pay to be a commercial for the Fed

Jade needs someone to give her a good ego check.

Remember that NBA era in the 90s and 2000s where any seven footer with a pulse would get an NBA contract because the notion was that they are seven feet tall so that automatically means they have potential? And they would just keep on getting contract after contract until they physically couldn’t perform anymore regardless of what their performance was?

That’s Jade as far as an in-ring wrestler goes.

There are jobbers in ROH who are better in-ring workers than her. They just don’t look like hulking monsters like Jade and don’t have any charisma, so they rightly don’t get pushed.

Bunch of random things...WWE Backlash will be in St. Louis on May 10th. Meltzer is reporting early PPV buy numbers for Revolution are around 135,000- 140,000 which isn't bad.

Thought Dynamite was somewhere in the middle, a lot more talking that usual. Possibly due to some talents needing time to recover after Sunday's show. Did 628,000 viewers which is up from last week.

Also please no more AEW women trying to use chair shots, that was bad.

Being reported Jeff Cobb has signed a deal with WWE.

This probably hasn't helped with the WWE Id thing.

When the Monstars stole the players abilities, Shawn Bradley didn’t get any worse

I know you don't want to comment on Dave Meltzer, but can you comment on him reporting that WWE pays for the WWE ID talents to fly to indy shows and that Gabe Sapolsky writes the script for those matches?

Note: We are told that Meltzer did report this in his weekly Newsletter but it was later removed.

Dave Meltzer would be factually incorrect on both parts. I'll refrain from further comment, since I said I wasn't going to comment on him again, and I won't.
