CI Wrestling Thread #56

Tough time for tv wrestling viewership numbers of late.

Last week’s Raw was the lowest viewed of the year.

Last week’s Smackdown the lowest viewed of the year.

This week’s NXT lowest viewed of the year.

This week’s Dynamite lowest viewed of the year on cable (Max #s not available), but the rating was up.

I assume TNA continues to not have enough people watching to even be ranked in the Nielsen top 100 given Fightful hasn’t updated the TNA viewership page since June 13.

There was one bright spot with last week’s Collision drawing one of its biggest total viewership and ratings numbers ever.

Are people perhaps starting to get burned out on wrestling to some degree? I mean it’s WrestleMania season and no NFL competition now on Mondays, shouldn’t viewership be going up?

Raw on Netflix not applicable here since it’s 7-day viewership, but for the others, are viewing behaviors shifting away from watching live/same day and towards watching on demand via DVR or streaming (if applicable)? It’s the same shift that’s been happening for years and years now with scripted programming, is that carrying over to wrestling now?

Or are people shifting to consuming wrestling via social media? NBA is one sports league that is seeing that happen. While tv viewership is down, views on social media are up.

I didn't watch Smackdown last week or Raw this past Monday but I was following updates on Bleacher Report. Its not fatigue or burn out, but there are other ways to engage and consume without watching a 2.5-3 hour show.

No doubt WWE creative needs to get better. Some of the decisions regarding the women don't make sense. I've noticed though the ones showing the most personality are pushed more. You can't come out all stoic and expect great results. Liv, Rhea, Chelsea, Tiffany, Bianca, and Naomi all have personalities and have gotten over.

With AEW, the problems lie much deeper even if they have a good show here and there. They cleared out the non-hardcore fans long ago and they ain't coming back. The title picture is two ex-WWE guys and they had Orange Cassidy vs Roderick Strong as the main event last night. I bet that sunk to the 400,000's. That's like having Kofi vs Dragon Lee as a main event of Raw. Most of that roster does not draw and likely never will. But that's on Tony for pushing them.

Anyone else think Ricochet’s last couple heel promos have been pretty darned good? His first few AEW ones were pretty bad, like normal, but since the Swerve feud kicked up, I’ve thought he’s been very good.
Ricochet’s growth outside the ring (along with Toni Storm and Swwerve as two other prime examples) is proof positive that some people just don’t strive under the guardrails of the WWE creative process.

Some people need the freedom that AEW provides to find their own voice as opposed to being given a script that doesn’t satiate them creatively.

Meanwhile, some people need those guardrails because they are horrible at anything outside the ring, they need it all handed to them on a silver platter, because if you then you get shit like this.

There’s never a one size fits all system in a creative and performance arts field.

Yep, I only consume WWE through whatever people say on social media/message boards and recaps from Cageside Seats. I rarely ever even watch a PLE anymore.

And WWE just keeps on adding more and more content too. Just started this LFG show. adding Evolve. Smackdown three hours. Got Saturday Night’s main event. Expanding other PLEs to two nights.

I think that’s one reason why AEW has gotten better this year - they don’t have Rampage anymore so the creative efforts can be better concentrated with less content. Of course, the loss of Rampage is not without its negative consequences as that is less opportunities for talent, and the roster was bloated as it was with five hours a week.

Those hardcores are likely making AEW a profitable company this year.

And lol at 400,000s. Keyboard diarrhea level posting. At least start up a podcast so your shitposting can make you a few bucks and maybe land you a charcuterie board from the Fed.

WWE needs to have Bianca be the one behind Jade and have those 2 at Wrestlemania. I like Bianca, I hate the hair and skipping entrance.
That’s going to have to be one hell of a carry job by Bianca for that to be a decent WrestleMania match. There’s a reason why they aren’t even giving Jade singles matches at house shows.

I get that and I have no idea what she's doing right now but I half way wonder if they wrote her off to give her time to learn how to wrestle. I agree she's sloppy but if they could put her together they'd have something.

Really wish AEW would do a video package about the history of the Crown Jewel of the Embassy robe that Ricochet stole, but if you aren’t an early days ROH fan, here’s a good summary about the robe from some Reddit comments…

SD is in New Orleans which is where next year's WM is going to be apparently. WWE has usually made the announcement by now so this is likely Rock returning to do it in front of those fans. He's going to be a hero and get the biggest pop imaginable just for that. I think they had McAfee announce all the future Indy PLE's too.

Never say never and it's hard to imagine Rock not being at Mania in Vegas but if he were wrestling, he'd be filming himself after workouts and cutting promos on IG.

According to Fightful, TKO has reportedly purchased the rights to Lucha Underground, with early talks of a potential “revival” under the WWE umbrella.

This is weird if it happens. I guess with the rating success Collision gets after airing after basketball they want to double dip now.
