CI Wrestling Thread #56

Like I said when they did the SNME before survivor series it was silly to do SNME the weekend before RR b/c that’s when the major buildup to WM begins - SNME felt like an afterthought and putting people on you knew wouldn’t lose anyways.

The only buildup that was good was Fatu getting his first singles match to pave his eventual main event path.
The best part of the night was Fatu bouncing the chair off the wWE “official” who acted like he was dead. That guy did a great job selling!

I’ve never ‘got’ Jey either. The crowd is really into him, seems like, but there’s just nothing there, IMHO.

I may go to my grave believing Vince is feeding Tony ideas. While Storm is creative, that entire thing screams 'Sports Entertainment', same with Jericho's run. We went from AEW fans mocking Sports Entertainment like their fandom is above it to the owner worshipping Jericho's bad ideas and fans adoring Storm's various gimmicks and over the top acting storylines. Somehow WWE has become more realistic while AEW has plunged into the waters of Sports Entertainment.

Fans were overdramatic and said men were murdered in a backstage segment. Too much blood was used but WWE never stated this was some sort of murder scene come to life. It was also one night and besides some fog used, there's nothing paranormal about the group and they haven't been used much since. Even the Viking Raiders, which was a stupid 90s type gimmick was changed. Now they look like regular guys you'd see at Sturgis. Because while Vikings seem cool, wrestlers pretending to be vikings in the 2020's is stupid.

I'm not saying don't like Toni Storm's gimmick changes. I'm saying it's not for me because it goes too far and asks fans to play along too much. Goldust was Sports Entertainment. Toni Storm pretending to be an actress from the 1940's while the screen goes black and white, losing, retiring, then coming back as a rookie only to switch back to a 1940's actress seems pretty Sports Entertainment to me. Reality based wrestling is what AEW promised from the start.

Eh, every wrestling organization that has ever been has some goofy and dumb stuff. Like you said, I guess it is just how much each person, individually can deal with it.

Whether it was done too early or just to drum up interest in the Australia show the Toni Storm- Mariah May segment was the best thing on wrestling TV this weekend. It wasn't even close.

While we don't know if it's 100 viewers or 100,000 because WBD doesn't release official numbers Fightful is reporting AEW shows are among the top viewed sports shows on MAX.

Also being reported the Amazon Prime may start offering AEW PPV's in 2025.

For something different I'll go through everyone who said they wanted to be in the Rumble tomorrow and then do the draw sometime mid-week.

I heard grand slam Australia will be on delay here after a basketball game or something - it’s not even getting proper billing if it’s a big show.

No issue with Toni Storm's gimmick but think they pivoted too early. Just like the the Omega/Osprey tag team.
Draw that shit out a little. Have Omega forgive Osprey over time. Nope they just went straight to it with what should have been a monthly long build. But now lets do this in 20 minutes.

Tony seems like the guy that reads the first page of a book then the cliff notes then the last page of the book.

Whether it was Tony or WBD they totally messed this thing up. What would make sense is to air it live on Max then show it on TV later that night, but I don't think they are even doing that.

Right now it's supposed to air after NBA All-Star Saturday Night is done.

I have interest in playing with Margot Robbie. Doesn't mean there's a chance it happens. I still believe Nia's run since returning hasn't been that bad though. Her last run was way worse and she injured half the roster.

Wrestletix shows All In: Texas with 11,073 tickets distributed with a current setup of 18,140. I think they'll get slightly over 20,000 which isn't bad of course but like the Aussie show, TK needs to realize his product isn't white hot right now. I'd almost encourage someone from ESPN.com to write an article about how mismanaged and poorly thought out the Australian event has been thus far. Under normal circumstances, that'd likely get people fired. Hopefully it's a good life lesson though.

If I missed someone please let me know. I can always add BKH as an honorary participant, that leaves two more.

The TNA partnership may end with WWE buying them but it's probably smart to latch onto the number one company during it's hottest period in decades. Is it better to remain uncool and stagnant as you fade out or get a big shot in the arm and a boost from big brother with lots of attention as you enjoy the ride before brother potentially knocks you out for good in the future?

On AEW, their ratings are ticking upward which is hilarious since everyone hates the Moxley stuff and is questioning why they're doing a TEMU Cena retirement storyline with Jarrett in 2025. It could just be Omega being there though. He's always been a draw for AEW, while his buddies are ratings poison.
I’m really surprised by the ratings uptick with the move to MAX. I know quite a lot of people who switched to watching only on MAX, including myself. I even canceled my YouRube TV subscription last month when they announced the price increase.

But Death Riders stuff on every episode it’s been featured in for like the last six weeks has been the most or second most viewed highlight clip on AEW’s YouTube for nearly every episode. One clip even surpassed a million, which is something that has been fairly rare for AEW for well over a year now. The very vocal IWC hates it but it’s clearly drawing eyeballs outside of that contingent.

This post is comically stupid. Who do you think signed off on all this? The concept of an Australian show never even gets past concept stage if not for TK approving it. TK, you know the owner of AEW, isn’t going to fire himself.

AEW wasn’t founded to be a serious, reality based wrestling company. It was founded to be a variety show of wrestling styles.

Orange Cassidy, dinosaur cosplaying Luchasaurus, the Alien from the Andromeda galaxy Kris Statlander, and the undead girl? Abadon were day one or year one talents, since when were those serious and/or reality based gimmicks?

NJPW, quite possibly the most serious wrestling promotion currently in existence, even does goofy dumb stuff.

For example, part of Hiromu Takahashi’s gimmick is he has a stuffed cat named Daryl. And it’s been ongoing off and on for 8 years. It’s played into stories and matches. Its origin story is that Hiromu was so attached to a title belt and developed such a strong bond with it that when he lost it he needed something to replace it, so he bought the stuffed cat. It’s been “murdered” several times in story, but since it’s a cat and has nine lives, it soldiered on. And I kid you not, it even got married once.

Ya they went to a smaller venue and can’t sell it out.

Its going to be on after the nba all star stuff on tape delay.

So ya it’s a massive disappointment on all fronts but that’s like Jerry jones firing himself - he won’t b/c he’s too stubborn trying to prove everyone right he just makes bigger mistakes.

It wasn't meant to be taken literally. No one thinks someone will literally be fired...but it was a massive misstep because Tony believes his company has a larger footprint than it actually does. When you're barely getting 3,000 fans for Dynamite in the states, that usually doesn't translate to stadium shows around the globe. They were forced to move to a smaller venue which lead to everyone's seats being changed, so some who paid for nosebleeds now have floor seats and others who paid for floor seats got nosebleeds. Then confusion on when and where it'll air and if it's a regular show or PPV. Now it's been deemed a regular show which will air at like 2:00 am in some parts of the US. It was poorly planned and comical that TK believes he can just follow WWE around during it's hottest period in years. So as I said, I hope this ends up being a life lesson for him. The Royal Rumble will see 60,000 on Saturday. All In might get around 20,000 in July. That's still good but not every big show is going to equal that first year in Wembley and you'd think the owner would understand that.

JD is a boss. I replayed the spot and his shoulder blades hit the table which whiplashed his head and neck. It might've looked worse than it actually was. In real time I assumed his neck slammed into the table. Can only imagine how that looked from Cole's POV. Good match though.

I'd assumed Cody/Cena, Gunther/Punk. Looks like they're setting up Cody/Punk for night two. Punk finally gets his main event and probably wins, unless they wanna stretch out Cody's reign until SS. Gunther's opponent? Who knows. I don't really like Cena winning one match in 2,000+ days to get a title shot which would be at the start of his retirement tour. Would make Gunther look pretty weak in the process too.

I’m wish I loved anything as much as WWE loves 1/2 hour promos to open a show.
I would have preferred a half-hour of promos. Instead, I got to sit in my car for 90 minutes watching absolutely nothing happen on the upper deck of the Brent Spence while the po-po played hide and seek with a guy who even Logan Paul thinks is a POS.

Are we doing a mens and women's rumble this year? I'm ignorant to how but it would be cool if we could do a pool like we do with the NCAA tournament where everyone logs in and it has a 5 dollar entry fee. Names are generated to find a spot randomly and winner takes the pot.

I didn't see the JD spot but hope he heals up well. He seems like a likable guy and pretty good worker. He was starting to get some steam with the Judgement Day. Always hate to see injuries but especially those who have busted their tail to make it to the big league. Being from overseas and a small country like Ireland, he really had to put in the work to get noticed. He still looks like a Bobble Head though.
