CI Wrestling Thread #56

Save of the century. For as much as Punk has run his mouth over the years, he'd still be at the top of my list of wrestlers who could time that pull off the table so perfectly.

Raw for tonight, first 30 minutes will be commercial free.

CM Punk to kick off the show.
Dakota Kai vs Katana Chance vs Shayna Baszler - WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship Tournament.
The New Day's 10th Anniversary.
Pete Dunne vs R-Truth.

The wheels are always turning in Punk's mind. He crashed the presser and was asked about his previous comments from years ago regarding Reigns. Most in his position would've peeled the curtain back and said he was wrong; that Roman has shown he's the guy. Nope. That's going to be the program of 2025 and Punk, along with Reigns and Heyman, are saving everything for the ring, so we got a "no comment" and a bit of awkwardness instead.

Opening segment was great with lots of threads to other stories affecting multiple people at once.

New Day segment was excellent. How do you turn on a preacher's son with a broken neck? Lol. Heel Day with Kofi and Woods as assholes is needed.

Great Raw and I haven't actually cared about the matches. It's a story-driven industry.

Really good show tonight. Don’t believe all the “Survivor Series stunk, WWE is in a creative rut” discord from the weekend holds any water.

AEW is colder than a banker's heart during a Minnesota winter. After the Punk footage aired, I made a prediction that being so petty would turn fans off, leading to numbers in the 600k's by the end of the year. Turns out I was way too optimistic because they've had record lows more than once and have only been above 700k three times since August.

Spoiler…

At tonight’s Ring of Honor TV Tapings, Matt Cardona debuted & attacked Chris Jericho during his Learning Tree segment.

It will be Jericho vs Cardona for the ROH World Championship at Final Battle PPV in Hammerstein Ballroom!

Ryan Nemeth has filed a complaint against AEW, alleging harassment and threats by CM Punk and accusing AEW of failing to address the issues. His claims include being threatened by Punk in June 2023, being removed from an event at Punk’s request in August, and being pressured to antagonize Punk publicly. Nemeth says AEW sidelined him, ignored creative pitches, and failed to take action despite his repeated complaints.

His contract expired in March 2024, following his last AEW appearance in November 2023. AEW offered him a settlement tied to an NDA, which was later withdrawn. Nemeth, who sought mental health support over the ordeal, is advocating for policy changes and financial compensation, while expressing appreciation for some AEW personnel who supported him during the dispute.

Nemeth is an adult man, correct? I saw “his”, being used, but the context of that statement made me second guess my assumption

What a pu$$y.

Let me get this straight:
Guy talks shit about someone online
Guy he talked shit about confronts him and offers going outside to fight as a way to settle it
Facing repercussions from one’s own online comments caused mental health issues

GTFO. That’s an insult to people with actual mental health issues. Nemeth learned actions/words have consequences, also known as FAFO.

This is the perfect encapsulation of that company and fanbase - perpetual victimhood

It shows how far AEW has fallen when the only traction they get here is about Mean Girls drama they can't get past. This paints a picture of HR being a shitshow while current talent were given power. The Bucks couldn't handle it, Omega didn't want it, and guys were allowed to be pricks to each other without consequence. Best thing is reading opinions from AEW fans because for them, everything is great, everything is Punk's fault, and if the company is criticized in any way, that person is a paid fed shill who wants AEW to DIEEEE. They want constant positivity but seem to be the most paranoid and bitter wrestling fans online.

Regardless, we know the past and current issues within AEW and yes, you'd think CM Punk was Ed Gein or something the way he's often portrayed by AEW fans. He was miserable there and lashed out a couple times. That's it. Look at how Punk has acted since being back with WWE and then look at Ricochet. He becomes All Elite and starts tweet fighting with fans, telling them to suck his, well, you know. WWE is a business. AEW is a high school during a class trip.

Punk has to be on his best behavior because he knows it's his last chance. He'll blow up at some point, he can't help himself. When it does it will be interesting to see how it's handled.

Anyway enjoyed Dynamite last night, the crowd was into a lot of things which always helps.

Don't talk much about TNA but they are being very optimistic in scheduling shows for 2025.

Rebellion will be held in April at the arena on USC's campus that ROH ran in 2023, holds 10,000.

Slammiversary will be two weeks before Summerslam at the UBS Arena in New York, an 18,000 seater AEW has run a few times.

Guess they think all the WWE fans that "suddenly care" about TNA will buy tickets.

If TNA is running an 18,000 seat arena, I would have to imagine there will be some NXT or main roster talents on the card to draw a house.

If not, they’re going to look like AEW trying to run Rupp Arena.

This sounds like fantasy booking. Punk fan but hear me out: It's been over a year and it's said he's been a "model citizen" backstage, helps out in NXT, and has made amends with some within WWE. There's a chain of command and it seems everyone needs to be on the same page for it to function, which they are. For over a year, AEW wasn't which is why there was continued fighting and social media drama. Punk isn't innocent but he's not the raging lunatic fringe psycho AEW fans have painted him as. It's why when a photo is tweeted of him smiling with an NXT talent or someone in an interview says how much he's helped, people mock AEW fans by saying "he's a MONSTER!"

Years ago it was said by fans that Punk despised Triple H. Last year when Triple H suggested "breaking the internet" by taking a photo with Punk, what was Punk's response? Something along the lines of "I get to be in a pointing picture?!" OMG THAT MONSTER! I mean, lol.

I've always been a Punk fan and I hope it doesn't happen. Would be nice if we could go one week without coming out about his time in AEW. And yes AEW fans need to just shut up about it.

In other news Bischoff does Ariel Helwani's show, spends most of the time bashing AEW and then this happens.

Ya Punk also sees there’s a future behind the curtain that hbk and hhh are enjoying so if he stays on good behavior he can help mentor the young talent since they seem to embrace him.

He also knows there’s feuds with a number of stars he wants to collide with still so ya hopefully he keeps on the good path.

I could add a lot of Punk’s issues from the first WWE run were due to being overworked and having to work injured with a bunch of green guys like early Shied and Ryback. He had no real major issues in WWE from 2005-13. He just lost his shit in 2014 and walked out.

I also don’t think he’s the reason for all the stuff in AEW. The lack of structure there is evident. Boss clearly plays favorites. Active wrestlers who are only over in their minds have office positions.

You also would never see HHH or Vince sniping at fans on Twitter so …..

Punk was bitter for reasons laid it out in the Cabana interview. I think he grew to dislike Vince, the corporate ass kissing of his yes men, probably including Triple H and for sure included Johnny Ace, and the manipulation by Vince that he needed you on tv all the time, even while injured. The Taker doc showed Vince pulling out the "I need you" father figure schtick, even when Taker could barely walk. He, Cena, and Austin will tell you Vince is a father figure to them today. Punk recently said "I already have a father. I didn't want or need another one." He saw through the bullshit, even if he mouthed off too much after the fact.

To piggyback off K-Mac's post, Bischoff, who really is a troll at this point, offered nothing on NXT and Ridge Holland sucks. Wasn't a good show. But then the Dynamite number comes out and it's 586,000, which is worse than NXT's bad number. So it is what it is. It's not NXT doing amazing, it's AEW continuing to fall back further. They somehow gotta fix that in 2025 because I don't know what WBD does if Dynamite is avg. 350,000 or something like that a year from now.

Few quick fixes since I'm bored:

- end or reduce the C2 Tournament. It gets too much focus, is points based, and turns fans off who aren't obsessed with Japanese style tournaments. It's for the low and mid card for a third rate belt. Sorry, but King of the Ring is simplistic and straight forward. Americans are a straight forward people.

- ground MJF's character a bit. He's not a Marvel villain. Did he not recently tell Roddy Strong that instead of his mother shooting his father in real life, after their match Strong will wish that his own mother had instead shot him? WTF is that? "You broke your neck, so what." is a good walk up to the line. "You'll wish your mom would've shot you instead of your dad" makes me cringe into another galaxy because it's so over the top, it's absurd and cheesy.

- end the Callus Family and make Callus a producer or something. In 2025, make Takeshita the guy who holds the AEW title for most of the year. Within that year, have him defeat Ospreay twice and make the third match a desperate, finish your story type of thing. I mean, I wouldn't use "finish your story" but them doing three matches in an 8 month period with Take getting the best of him until he finally doesn't would be good (shit, pal).

I really enjoyed the C2 last year and it did good numbers. But looks like I'm in the minority. Really interesting thing posted by Thurston today concerning AEW's ratings.

BTW, I keep recording Dynamite on my DVR and I set it for a 5 minute overrun.

And still haven't seen the end of an episode for months now.
