Are you serious! If you are a college basketball team and you have a Charles Matthews(assuming it's Ulis/Briscoe/Murray/Poy/Skal) probably coming off the bench you have one hell of a team. I really don't think people understand how really good this young man is. He's extremely versatile. He's so good at so many things that you just don't give enough respect to him. I already know I will enjoy watching all the other players, but I think people will find this is the guy they become most excited about by the end of the year.

I am extremely high on CM as well .. For selfish reasons I do like his minutes being somewhat reduced, to possibly have him for two years.. Heck with the way Cal gets guys to the league he still may only be here one year. I think he's that good.

Its a shame that he got injured because the talent guys kind of got off of him when he missed some tournaments. And then he tried to come back early and it hurt his ratings. The last couple of games of the season that I saw he was a completely different player. He will be someone to watch, he's hungry for sure.

Might be coming off the bench but the way he defends he probably won't be going back to the bench very quickly.[winking]

Love his potential as a defensive stopper. He just gets stuff done on the court. One thing this team won't hurt for is versatility this year. Coach Cal is going to have a variety of styles at his disposal this year.

I'd love to see for stretches of the game and against the right opponent Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Mathews and a big like Lee or Skal if he can get up and down the court fast enough.
Spread the court and push the "paste" as fast as possible and get after it on a full court press. Have guys able to handle the ball and be excellent passers, not to mention have 3-4 shooters on the floor if Skal is in or maybe 5 if Mathews can shoot it or Mulder. Mulder has played the 4 because of his ability to jump and long arms.

Duke likes to play like this as well for stretches of the game and it works if you have shooters and we will have that this year. It works very well and almost impossible to stop if all 5 positions can handle, pass and shoot. Zones will be useless.

I agree. If Duke can run Winslow at the 4 for most of the game and do well...see no reason UK cannot run a 6'5 Matthews or 6'4 Mulder at the 4 for spot duty...if nothing else when one of our big guys gets in foul trouble. Obviously could just play Willis some at the 4 as well, but he has to prove his worth, as do M and M.

Matthews will likely be coming off the bench, but people seem way, way too certain about the lineup. Yeah, you'd have to put the best odds on Ulis/Briscoe/Murray/Poythress/Skal, but that's not set in stone. I would not be shocked to see either Ulis or Briscoe coming off the bench (though still getting big minutes), with Mulder or Matthews as a starter. Cal likes size, not just inside, but on the perimeter. And 5 of the guys we're talking about have never played a second of D1 basketball. You can never know for sure how guys will translate.

I'll play Devils advocate for a min. I'm not sold Murray will start. Honestly, how many times have we criticized how good a player is based on an all star game? I think Murray will be a great player, but I don't think its a forgone conclusion he starts. I think cal will put the best 5 out there per position. Hell, Briscoe may come off the bench. Truth is, nothing is set in stone for starting this year except skal, and probably ulis

I'm glad you started the post about Matthews because I think a "lot" of fans are going to be surprised just how good he is. I have seen him on TV 2-3 games and I was really impressed with his play. Like someone said if he had not been injured we would have been a 5 star. Next year is going to another fun year.

That's the thing I think Matthews is being undervalued. I would not be suprised at all if briscoe/Murray do not start.

It pushes everyone down a slot in the rotation. Suddenly a guy like Matthews or Mulder or Lee or Willis or Hawkins who may not have been quite ready for his role gets to be exceptionally talented for what we'll be asking him to do.

Can you imagine the value of a guy like Julius Mays on a team that had Brandon Knight or Doron Lamb instead of Harrow and Polson?

The amount of flexibility this just gave us cannot be overstated.

Regardless of who starts, it really only matters who plays the most. Hell, Hawkins has started games, but really doesn't play very much in those games. With that said, no way Ulis, Briscoe, and Murray don't get the most minutes of the guards this year. All three will likely average over 25 minutes. I still think Mulder and Matthews get around 20 each, but I doubt they play more than the other 3 guys.

My guess on our rotation:

Starters
G Ulis- 30-35mpg.
G Briscoe- 30-35mpg.
G Murray- 30-35mpg.
F Poythress- 25-30mpg.
F Labissiere- 25-30mpg.

Key Reserves
F Lee- 20-25mpg.
G Matthews- 15-20mpg.

Bench
G Mulder- competes with Matthews for the seventh spot, sees minutes when we need shooting.
F Wynyard- foul trouble fill-in (second semester), spot duty.
F Willis- foul trouble fill-in (first semester), spot duty.
G Hawkins- spot duty.
G Floreal- practice player.

Correct me if I wrong, but wasn't CM a 5-star prospect at the time of his commitment to UK? Possibly even the #1 or 2 ranked SG according to some services?

I watched pretty much most of the top 50 players in the country in this class and most of junior class so far and Murray is in my top 5 impressive players. This isn't an all star game but actual games and in person where you can hear them talking and where they are looking.
It's going to take a tremendous player to push him to the bench. That player is going to have to be a top 5 pick in the draft. If we have guys like that then we are going to have a tremendously talented team and as fans are going to have another wonderful season of watching our boys dominate.

As good as Briscoe is and he is Murray is better. Murray does not have the elite ball handling skills as Ulis but he is close a better passer and has a scorers mentality when told to put some points on the board.
Those claiming about not expecting too much as those were all star games and such....well every game I saw him In He did exactly what u all saw in those all star games. Routinely going for 25-35 points along with 5-8 assists and 4-5 rebounds on a team full of div 1 players. This team is not some terrible team but the same level as Oak Hill Academy. And he got these numbers against the top talent in the country and many times getting double teamed or zone traps. He would make em pay by hitting the Maker brothers or his other teammates for an assist.
Very nice player. Skill set is top notch.

One thing I like about Briscoe is that he is a crunch time player, you want someone to step up he's there. If Murray is like that then we have 3 guards who will be tough to handle, not including Matthews, Mulder and Hawkins.

He may come off the bench but he will play big minutes & play a huge role on this team & if he does what he's capable of doing.

I would think Ulis would be getting around 28-30, Briscoe 30-32, Murray 30-32, Poy about 25, Skal will be getting 30 Lee 20 and Willis 5. Mulder 15-17, Mathews 15 or so and some mop up min for Hawkins If he doesn't improve his shot. If his shot comes around and he starts playing to his potential then he's going to be taking minutes away from somebody. Dude has athletic ability much like Bledsoe but isn't their as a player but he can be. Just up to him. Depending on his present state and what Cal is expecting from him I wouldn't be surprised if he got a redshirt this year or the year afterward.

Would be a great success story if he could possibly make a nba team somewhere. But he has a lot of work to do but he has the foundation to do it.
