Charles Mathews underrated?

Well I just pointed it out because you said Vargas was our 7th man, when, as you just said, he was a very distant 8th.

But Wiltjer averaged double-digit minutes, and played in every single game for a national championship team that boasted 6 NBA draft picks, I'd say that counts as being "in-the-rotation", in every sense of the word.
If you consider 4ppg and 9mpg as being a rotation player then we will certainly go more than 7 deep.

I could see our rotation looking similar to the one in 2012, when it comes to the way minutes are split:

Ulis(Teague)- 32.6mpg
Labissiere(Davis)- 32mpg
Murray(Lamb)- 31.2mpg
Briscoe(Kidd-Gilchrist)- 31.1mpg
Poythress(Jones)- 29.3mpg
Lee(Miller)- 26.1mpg
Matthews(Wiltjer)- 11.6mpg
Mulder(Vargas)- 6mpg

Might see a little more for Matthews or Mulder and a little less for Lee depending on foul trouble.

Look for Matthews Minutes to be more around 16 and Lee more around 20

Do you expect to see much improvement from Lee? If so what areas?

I just would like to see him improve his FT% by +10 or so.

I think Lee's gonna look like a totally different player this year. I think he'll be more confident first of all and that's where it'll all start. He'll be experienced and he'll feel like he's a key player (which he will be). But offensively he's gonna score his point on lobs and off offensive rebounds and I think he'll be a beast defensively. He should give us a big spark, and he should give us energy off the bench. His FF shooting isn't going to improve too much I wouldn't think. Like I said he'll make his money off his defense and rebounding, and he'll get his points off lobs and offensive rebounds.

Ok well I don't think he will look like a totally different player then. Lobs and offensive rebounds is pretty much the only way he has ever scored. His MO has been a spark off the bench. A totally different play would look like a player that worked on his offensive game to the point where he scores in other ways BESIDES lobs and put backs. Back to the basket post moves and a face up game would be a start.

Until I see otherwise, I compare Matthews game to Heshimu Evans, though Charles is a rightie. His handle is the weak spot and so will need some work.

Yeah I don't see that happening honestly, but I do think he's gonna be big for us. But I mean WCS wasn't really offensively skilled at all. More than Lee but I mean... Anyways I think Lee can be similar IMO. He can have a major impact with playing great defense, being a shot blocker, good rebounder, and scoring his points off lobs and offensive rebounds. Now he'll probably be slightly improved as far as low post scoring hopefully, but he's not going to be no KAT by any means LMAO.

It was 12 MPG and it does not really matter how much he scores.

Before he went down this year, Alex Poythress barely averaged 5 PPG, does that mean he wasn't in the rotation?

Last year, Dakari Johnson only averaged 5 Points and 14 minutes a game, was he not in the rotation as a freshman?

If a guy averaged double-digit minutes and appears in every single game throughout the season, he is in the rotation. Its that simple.

If he averaged 8 MPG and only appeared in 23 out of 40 games, THEN he would not really be in the rotation.

But Wiltjer averaged double-digit minutes, and played in every single game, including in the Final Four and National Championship games.

So yes, he was in the rotation.

Matthews has been very much under the radar, but I really think he will surprise a lot of folks this year. Thinking a little bit of Liggins but maybe with a little more offensive game. I would take that.

I only used scoring with Wiltjer because that was all he brought to the table. Poythress and Johnson, to varying degrees, brought rebounding and defense.

But hey, you want to say Wiltjer was a rotation player his freshman year? Go ahead. I don't consider him a rotation player because he didn't do much to contribute to that team.
If you want to count Wiljer-like contributions from players this year then we might say this team will go 10 deep with rotation players (PLATOONS!). I don't really see that happening, certainly not with what happened to Calipari in the late Spring recruiting this year.

I consider Wiltjer a rotation player in 2012. He played in every game. He averaged double digits in minutes played. To me, that equals a rotation player.

Same here. He was the last guy in the rotation...and his job was to try to hit a 3 or two a game. He did that well at times...not so well at other times.

Mathews was a highly rated 5star a year ago wasn't he. Like I said he's gonna surprise some folks. From what I see he's a DeAndre Liggins type. He should come off the bench and give us a spark and be an elite defender.

I like Liggins and all bot geez, give the guy a little more credit since he hasn't played a game yet.
