Gary Parrish:
NCAA investigations typically span several years from start to finish -- what with the notices and interviews and replies and appearances in front of committees. And while the penalty ultimately delivered at the end is usually the most crippling development, ask any coach who has experienced an NCAA case and what they'll tell you is that the sheer amount of time it takes -- again, from start to finish -- serves as a de facto punishment.
It's a cloud that lingers.
It often negatively affects recruiting.
Which is why what's happening at Louisville is so fascinating.
The school's men's basketball program is not even one year into its NCAA case, and it's still likely more than a year from having the case completely in the rearview mirror, and yet Rick Pitino's recruiting hasn't really taken a hit. The Hall of Fame coach gotV.J. King, a five-star prospect from the Class of 2016, to follow through on his commitment even after Katina Powell's book -- a book that alleged a university employee paid her to provide strippers and prostitutes for prospects and players, which is what launched the NCAA's investigation -- published last October. And on Thursday, Pitino secured another commitment from another five-star prospect --Malik Williams, whom 247 Sports ranks as the 22nd-best player in the Class of 2017.
That's two five-stars despite the ongoing NCAA case.
