Cats v Aces (Home Opener)

Cats lead 6-3 going to the bottom of the 8th. A good play by Stanke on a ball in the turf that he kept in front of him and popped up and threw out an advancing runner.

Lead runner on and our 4 hole once again trying to bunt. A tale as old as time.

He does bunt and it goes fair. That was weird...

I think we’ve swung the bat a bit better tonight but this offense isn’t good enough to give away outs with this terrible base running

Another error for Evansville. We sure scheduled a win. I am wondering if Evansville spent pregame at KSR Bar.

Let's not give him any ideas.
You guys may fuss about bunting but 3 K’s with the bases loaded is pathetic. This team has always been bad at clutch hitting with NM as manager. At least when you bunt you make contact. 🤷‍♂️

I guess that it is better than not scoring at all, but that should not be what we have to do in order to get runs against this Evansville team. We scored just 6 runs in this one and Troy scored at least 7 in every game this weekend. That's in a mid-week game and while Evansville committed 7 errors.

This team has potential with a really promising pitching staff but offensively the strikeouts and base running is atrocious.

Yeah, I'm really trying to understand what is happening with the baserunning blunders and the bunting.

We've had some other bunts, but no other player has come close to the same number of attempts as pitre. He has to have 5 times as many attempts as the next closest player. That leads me to believe that it is a pitre issue, not a Ming issue. Which is really a ming issue because he needs to coach him out of it. Maybe he's trying not to .essentially with his head and keep him confident, I dunno.

The baserunning stuff is mind boggling too. I'm wondering how much is on the play calls and how much is on the execution. I have nor always agreed with Ming on his in game coaching decisions. But I just find it really hard to believe that any reasonable minded baseball person would make some of these decisions. But, I also find it hard to believe he tells Gilliam to take off for 2nd while the pitcher is still set, just standing there on the rubber. I mean.. what in the world?! I'm hoping he was maybe using this game as an experiment to what he could get away with on the basepaths and not a trend for the future.

And yes, Comebak, it was bases loaded 3 times and no runs. A couple of the times I believe there was 1 out or no outs, also.

Seemed like there was a lot of barking going on between the teams today also. After the Sunday game the was a dustup on the field between players and even coaches. I like the competitive attitude and confidence bordering on cockiness, but not sure how i feel about it happening this much this early.

Gilliam seems to have a bit of a nastiness about him that I think might be a cause of that.

I went for 2 innings, long enough to buy a $9 Bud Light, that was the highlight for me. 🤣

Beer sales were brisk, but a lot were guys like me just buying one ceremonial brew.

This team will not be very good, unless I know very little about baseball (which I suppose is arguable)

A win Is a win, but I'm not sure how to feel after this one. On one hand, UK has regularly lost games like this in past years which has killed its tourney hopes as we ended up on the wrong side of the bubble. On the other hand, we continually have base running errors, poorly timed bunts, and no clutch hitting.

Wright state is usually a top tier Mac team, so this weekend might tell us something.

Wright state isn't in the MAC, but yes they are usually pretty decent for a mid major. Just need to keep pitching. Looks likes it's gonna be cold and rainy this weekend after being 70s tomorrow and Thursday... ugh..

I admittedly know very little about baseball but I know when I coached little league not to make the decisions this coaching staff makes.

I just got back to Cincy from the game. (I didn't arrive until the bottom of the 1st)

Crowd and atmosphere were good for February. I thought the weather was the best I've been to for a home opener since the Cliff.

The pitching is really good. I thought we had the 2nd best staff in the SEC last year and this year it should be top 5 again. The defense is good, too. Stanke, Gilliam, and Waldschmidt all had some really good plays.

The offense has been different. I am in wait and see mode. The bunting and aggressive baserunning has cost us several outs over the first 4 games, but it has also scored most of our runs. I feel like it's too aggressive and maybe that's just while everyone is figuring out their limits (coaches included). This is exactly how we played against TN, Auburn, and in Hoover (and it really worked). So maybe there will be a common ground in there between the over aggressive outs and creating pressure.

Still, I hate to end up losing a game or two we shouldn't right here to an inferior team bc we are getting thrown out on the bases.

This is a good take. I was at the game last night and came here to ask WTF is going on with the baserunning and bunting, but looks like everyone has that covered. The aggressiveness (putting it mildly) on the basepaths really stood out in the fall scrimmages and in the intrasquads so far this spring. I hope Mingione is using the early spring to figure some things out, but if we keep running into outs like this and doing things like bunting with the bases loaded, we're in for a long season.
