can Monk shoot like this kid from OU

You won't find many people who can. A lot of people might not have realized how special Hield was until tonight. The kid was shooting 49.4% from 3 before tonight's performance.

Hield is the truth. What happened to Bragg Jr and Diallo? Did I miss something?

It's been a point of frustration for some KU fans, but the truth is Self doesn't let HS rankings dictate playing time. Self's biggest things he wants first and foremost from his players are toughness and strong defense. Diallo has shown his raw skills, but has yet to catch up to the speed of the college game and makes some big bone headed plays by trying to do his own thing and not play within the team scheme. In a huge game like this, Self has lots of seniors who he knows won't make mistakes and at this point give us the best chance of winning.

Personally I think he'll get it and it will click through Big 12 play. Not sure why Self is criticized for not playing the frehsmen though. Seems fans of college basketball would respect not just giving in because a kid is supposedly one and done.

Hield was amazing tonight. But at the same time he also cost them the game with that inbounds pass. But he should be moving up draft boards. I didn't understand why he was projected as a late 1st rounder when he should be top 10. He's gonna be a star in the NBA bet on it

Well seeing as mason was about an inch away from him and even stepping on the out of bounds line ... I'd say that's why it was hard lol.

And the thing about Diallo. LOL bet he wishes he had a re-do right about now. "Oh I wish I had went to UK" LMAO. Maybe other kids will learn from crap like this.

I'd totally agree if the players playing in front of Bragg and Diallo were much better players, but that's not really the case. The only thing that those players have on Bragg and Diallo is experience.

Seriously, Lucas, Traylor, Mickelson? Those guys shouldn't be keeping Bragg and Diallo off the court. Come March when KU will probably need their best players to play, two of their best (Bragg and Diallo) might not be ready, from sitting the bench so much.

Self does this almost every year for some reason. Embiid and Oubre were backups half the year and Oubre was barely even playing off the bench. His OAD track record isn't great outside of Wiggins (Xavier Henry, Josh Selby, Cliff Alexander). Embiid unfortunately has battled too many injuries and Oubre is a rookie, so it's tough to see how their careers may turn out.

Seems to me your insinuating Cal lets high school ratings dictate playing time, which is pure bullshit.

Hield is a pure scorer who can score from anywhere on the floor. If Monk can do half of what Hield is doing this year, he will be a top 5 pick after his freshman season. Monk is a better athlete, but Hield is a better basketball player right now. He should be though, he is a senior in college, Monk is a senior in high school.

It comes down to work ethic. I read an article on Buddy last night because I really didn't know much about him. The dude lived and lives in a gym. Wanted to get out of the bahamas and be an nba "kobe" type player...his goal since 11. Now most kids set crazy goals just because they have a little skill, but this article made it read like his neighbors had to run him off the street out front at night because he was dribbling so late in the night, coaches had to lock up balls to keep him from still playing, and I think some of that has carried over to college. It mentioned one coach by name who had to lock up the balls from him because he wouldn't leave the gym. Seems like a kid Cal would have loved "gym rat."

This was the 1st time I had seen this kid play and he is the best shooter I have seen this year. OU is a good team but I thought they made some bad passes late in the game. Hield should be a great NBA player.

That inbounds play was not his fault at all. The KU player should have been called for a violation for reaching across the line. I think it's actually a delay of game warning the 1st time it happens, then a technical every time after. I'm not 100% sure if the college rule but I think this is correct. If he makes contact with the inbound thrower it's either a technical or intentional foul immediately. It was obvious that the KU player crosses the line and made contact with the thrower before the inbounds was over. Something should have been called either way. That is in no way the fault of the OU player. The official failed the player on that play. The KU player even said after the game that he moved up after the official told him not to do exactly that.

Explain skal?

Cal coaches for March, not January. Is Skal better on the court than Lee right now? No. Should he be in March if developed through the year? Yes. He won't get any better sitting on the bench.

You might keep in mind that the "kid from OU" is a 22 year old senior. It took four years of college experience for him to become this. Monk may eventually become the same sort of scorer, but it ain't gonna happen from Day 1.

I wanted to tell you who Jay Williams compared Hield to last night prior to the game: The University of Jodie Meeks.

So if Monk is as good as Meeks, we're in for some excellent results.

Im hoping Monk can shoot like this kid, but Im beginning to worry that UK is where great shooters go to die.

Bragg is a 4. He has Perry Ellis in front of him. As for Diallo, I wish I had a video of all the minutes he has played. When you shoot a sloppy jump shot in a 1 on 4 situation you're gonna get pulled. Period. Cal wouldn't allow that crap either.

Haven't watched Kansas this year but saying he has Perry Ellis in front of him doesn't really mean much to me . How many final fours has Ellis taken Kansas to ? At the end of the year would your team be better with Ellis, who probably is maxed out right now , or Diallo with lots of minutes and a years experience under his belt ? Right now, if I was offered a choice of Ellis of Diallo to join our Ky team and start playing immediately , I'm taking Diallo every time . He can be the player that gets you guys where you want to be at the end of the year . I've never seen that in Ellis . JMO

If you'd take Diallo right now over Perry Ellis right now it's a good thing the University of Kentucky doesn't employ you. Just my opinion.

hypothetically terrible decision.

Because the guys he's playing in front of the freshmen are doo-doo.

Or even Year 1.

You make a good point though. For example, I would love to see what Murray would look like as a college senior. He would have long figured out that you don't get extra points for degree of difficulty. He would learn to better set up and square up in anticipation of a pass he knew was coming because of his familiarity with the offense and teammates - resulting in much superior marksmanship.

But that's not the model we have. To get the best talent potential you give up getting to see the best of the end product. And I'm fine with that. I enjoy watching the development, but I don't envy the toil and stress Calipari has every year trying to bring it together and develop the individuals enough to be a great team in such a short period of time (i.e., by March). I understand why he says his shelf-life is limited in coaching UK, especially with the model he's using.

My bother has seen monk play several times throughout his high school career, and we are going to see him play later this month. He said, as it has been well reported by scouts, that his shooting has gotten progressively better. He has worked hard on his shot, and shoots it well from deep. He said a game last year monk dropped 50 points, a bunch from deep, with two guys drappped on him the whole night.

It's not about right now. Ellis is what Ellis is going to be. He can ride the bench most of the year and still be that same player come March. Diallo has potential to grow if given the experience. If he plays now he gets better and will be better come March. So play Diallo even if it means taking a few lumps now and have him AND ELLIS for the tourney.

Exactly. Diallo has more upside . The Fastest way he could develop it is playing time . Of course they might lose a game or two and it might break their streak of conference championships that seemingly is more important to them than final fours and national championships .
