Calzada over Murphy

Could it be that we are focusing on calzada because Murphy isn’t interested in UK? That would seem likely to me

Calzada wasn’t good at Texas A&M or auburn but maybe he’s developed since then. Played a lot of football.

I’m willing to bet they are saving about 500k if not more taking calzada over Murphy. That’s the real reason.
That number might actually be well over $1 million, but I don't think the actual talent gap is worth that. Murphy is simply going to have more hype than the guy who spent that last few seasons at Incarnate Word. However, getting a discount on Calzada and spending more elsewhere might have a greater overall impact on the team by a mile.

IMO…Stoops wants a backup QB that can come in and play the role Wimsatt did this year. Boley is his starter.

Calzada was terrible in the SEC at A&M.
I mean, he did beat Alabama as a backup quarterback while at A&M. His teams have also had winning records when he has started.

His completion percentage has improved by a lot, and he showed an ability to move out of the pocket this year. I realize that it was against lesser competition, but we also don't know if we are bringing in a surefire starter or competition for Cutter Boley at this point.

I knew someone was going to bring this up. Why didn't A&M keep him then? Why didn't he play at Auburn?

Then he is begging to get fired. Plus, I don’t trust this staff’s talent evaluations on offense. 3-9 here we come!

Go read Murphy’s X account. I don’t have X but a guy at work showed me and he is posting all UK stuff. Rowland post this morning that he was Murphy was ready to commit but the staff preferred Calzada. There was mention of an analyst that said for Murphy to succeed that everything had to be set up for him. He said Uk is not setup for Murphy. They said Murphy was a pocket passer and that UK wasn’t setup for a qb that could set back and pick a part a D. Rowland then said that was not the type of offense Stoops nor Hamden wanted to run. 😂

People are gonna delude themselves into thinking since he did great on the FCS level, he'll suddenly do this against SEC teams. Unfortunately, he isn't going to have all 5 stars surrounding him like he did at A&M.

I don't know what this means? Did A&M release him or something? Why didn't UK keep Dusty Bonner 20+ years ago? Sometimes other factors just come into play.

He didn't play at Auburn because he had a shoulder injury. He probably would have started for them though. That entire season was a disaster for Auburn.

No, I don't think anybody is expecting him to be a superstar or anything like that. But he will be 24-years old with a lot of college experience. He might be the best possible leadership role model for both Cutter Boley and Stone Saunders. All of these players have played for faith-based programs, and sometimes having an older role model who has taken the journey that Calzada has brings something intangible to the picture.

Calzada, Boley, and Saunders isn't a bad QB room at all. Murphy would just be a mercenary. Who knows if he would bring any leadership that would rub off on the younger guys?

That was a fake Murphy account. Whoever runs that has since announced they're "reentering the portal." The Ruby's "home" thing is funny though, since our coach spends more time in their bar than he does his office.

Reports are out there that Murphy was wanting crazy dollars
We need everything and unless we fix both line of scrimmages it’s not going to matter who the QB RB or WR are … we have to get way better lineman and edge rushers - so use that budget wisely
At least Calzada has played a lot of Football unlike BVG

Calzada better be good then. Because that sounds insane. Also he played at duke everything there wasn’t setup to succeed and they went 9-3 and threw for 3000 yards

The A&M cult does have some history giving up on QB’s a tad early. See Kyler Murray and Haynes King as two examples. Not saying Calzada will sniff the success either had after they joined teams with female cheerleaders, but he would improve our QB room at what is likely a reasonable price.

Spend more money on Oline and get a servicable qb until Boley is ready.
We need the blue wall to make a comeback.

I don't understand why he didn't just stay at Duke. They were already paying him very well from what I have heard, and he still left in search of more money. Are we looking for that kind of me-first attitude?

Kudos to the guy for trying to maximize his earning potential, but we should have learned from our basketball program that these mercenaries aren't always best for the team. The guys that were earning money at UK last season lack leadership and didn't work hard. I just don't know what people want anymore when it comes to team building.

To all you that act like we're missing out on the next Patrick Mahomes, here's what Duke fans think of Murphy:

- "Murphy was a vastly overrated transfer living on a reputation built while playing for a top 5 team at Texas. He suffers from poor accuracy, refusal to run to get out of trouble, and then throwing the ball into coverage to avoid sacks. He will likely be gone next year but the program would be better off if he was benched now."

- "Looked great for a couple plays yesterday, then looked like QBs from the Franks/Roof era in other parts."

- "I'm more concerned that he seems to decide what pass he's going to throw before he takes the snap . . .
he then passes to that person regardless of how many defenders are around him or if he has any chance of getting the ball to the receiver."

- Statue in the pocket. Total non-threat to scramble.

- Has a cannon for an arm, so will try to missile throws into tight coverage

- Someone mentioned a stat that showed him among the worst in the country when under pressure
