Was at the game yesterday for the first time in a while and I don't see how Cal can physically keep his outbursts going like he does. If Briscoe was close by one time he'd been a dead man

I know he does this every game because you can hear him thru the TV! Don't see how he can keep that up

My dad was a longtime High School football coach and stated, "this is the type of team that kills you".

I believe his statement was not about this team bad, Neccesarily, but just the fact that they're young, have loads of potential, but need guided with a forceful hand. Cal needs to be very active with this team and that's what we are seeing.

Hopefully he has 3+ more seasons in him and doesn't burn out too quickly.

Cal yells at everybody, for show, if for nothing else. Watch the next time he is "miked up". He says all kind of crazy things. Saturday's game, I saw him scream at Murray, when he was called for a foul and it wasn't anywhere near a foul, just running with the player with the ball, Cal screamed at Murray telling him not to foul. Murray was like, "I didn't". That has to be demoralizing. To get a bad call and then have your coach back it with yelling at you.

Was setting real close to Cal yesterday. He about stroked out a few times. What amazes me is that recruits setting right behind him still come here. He goes friggin nuts over there. When Willis passed up the open J that was epic Calapari
Can't argue with his record and passion to win

It is who Cal is, not being himself would kill him. Most people would give anything to be that passionate about their job. It is the challenge that keeps him going, he's not going to burn out anytime in the near future and I don't think he'll be going anywhere until the passion is gone and there is nothing more to accomplish. What is that? I don't know, maybe 11 NC's, a UK player on every NBA team? Who knows? The day he begins to sit over there and calmly watch games is when you better start worrying!

So you're saying it wasn't a foul but Cal obviously thought it was the correct call. I've seen Cal tell refs many times that they made a bad call but if he's yelling at his player for fouling then I'm thinking the player, in this case, Murray, committed the foul.

Uhh...no...he didn't. Never assume.

Yeah, you're right, Cal has been coaching that same exact way for 20+ years, and used to be even more aggressive and louder in his younger years, but it's all been just for show.

Has to be demoralizing? Murray scored 12 of his 17 points in the 2nd half. Yeah, he was demoralized.

I didn't say all of it is for show. It's easy to tell when it is.

You need a coach willing to get player's attention in crucial points of the game. Thats what Cal does. He is a great coach.

Absolutely, Cal is a HOF coach he knows

You are so right. Cal's so strong armed and demoralizing to these kids; I seriously doubt any top player(s) would want to come to UK and be crushed like that on national television. It is no wonder former demoralized players never support UK or Cal.

Cal yells and screams a lot more than most coaches and, you know what, he wins a lot more than most. That is all part of the game time experience. Lot of yelling at the players, but it ends there when the game is over. Cal treats them like his own after the buzzer sounds. Players know this

Come on people. Cal is actually reserved compared to his years at other schools. Especially because he knows the there are microphones and cameras everywhere. Like he says it's different here I can't hide you. He can't hide himself either he knows this

Memphis never had any type of open practice. Cal cusses like a sailor. He even talked about some of this his first season here. UK always has media or someone at practice. He said he wasn't used to it. Also after the T jones thing on camera his wife told him to watch what he says during games.
If you would have sit anywhere close to bench during memohis run with Rose you would hear fbombs and screaming. So what cal does today is mild

I don't believe Cal is built that way. Watched him at the Dunbar games last night. Looked like a miliion dollars, laughing a lot and talking with people at the event and on the phone. Most men his age after a big college game would be 'decompressing' on the couch.

He yells just as loud if the players are right in front of him as he does if they are at the other end of the court, that looks silly.

I always heard old guys vapor lock because their sack covers the butt and they air lock.

Maybe he just needs to adjust.

Has anyone here sat right behind the bench for a game? I wonder what season ticket holders think that do. I can see many finding it interesting as to what Cal is seeing through the course of the game and I can see others being worn out. I go back and forth on the topic. I would prefer positive reinforcement while the game is going on and have him rip them to shreds during timeouts or after he's taken someone out of the game. But you can't argue with the success he's had nor how fondly former players speak of him.

Not sure how Brad Stevens does it.

Can you ever imagine Cal like this during a game...

Probably going to catch some heat for this but .... No coach is perfect, different coaches have different weaknesses. When the $hit is hitting the fan , on the road , shots aren't falling, crowd going nuts , refs making questionable calls , SOMETIMES , especially with a young team , they need a calming influence. A cool head to calm them down . Cal is anything but that .It's just his personality but I think it's cost him some games . Arguably the best 2 coaches in college basketball history are John Wooden and coach K . Both would get on the referees , but I've rarely seen them yell at the players . When I played I liked to feel like coach had my back .

I believe Kenny Payne provides that cool, reassuring, always smiling component to the bench.

When he stopped yelling so much in 2013 they went on a run. Depends on the team.

Some of the best coaches are loud, screamers. Coach Cal does when needed, Coach K goes ballistic and screams, stomps and goes insane. Bobby Knight threw chair and go nuts. Tom Izzo is a screamer. There is a method to this madness, and it works. When you get to post season play, and tone it back, it demands instant attention from your players, They respond, you are not yelling and all of the sudden you retain the coaching

I don't completely disagree with this post. But I've seen K get even more feisty than Cal before; at players.

Agreed.

And yeah, it has cost Cal a lot at UK. He just has a 194-38 record here for a 83.5% winning percentage. If he was quiet, I'm sure he'd be over 90% [eyeroll]

The whole game is for show. It is played for fun and viewed for entertainment. It's just that UK fans, especially, want to win every game. Fortunately, we have a coach that feels the same way. The difference is; I'm yelling from the couch and Cal is yelling from the bench. Well, that and... he knows what he's yelling about and I usually don't.

It's called passion....I've never had a coach worth a darn that didn't yell and scream all the time. Our soft culture doesn't like it but those who get it, get it. It's how champions are made.
