Duke is still great because , Coach K legacy, methods, and resources are still being used.
K was a workaholic. He liked to control everything so the chances for mistakes decrease and for success increased. He would keep notes on planning preparations, notes on the weekly execution of the plan, notes on the game, notes on how ref call the game, etc. after the game or season he would revisit with the staff the notes and the plan. His military discipline translated into a well oiled basketball machine. With time his influence grew that he would name his AD, successors ,etc…Coach S is very familiar with his methods of preparation and also recruiting channels and methods. Duke players over 40 years are all engaged and behind S because K planned for it and wanted his legacy and influence to continue in a successful Duke program.

Kentucky Rupp’s influence was reduced after the shaving points scandal … and legacy completed after Coach JB tenure ended and Pat Riley went the NBA route.

Now we have two branches Pitino and Calipari that we could exploit . Instead of booing them or antagonize them we should keep both closed to the program. Both of them have pluses and minuses but both of them know that their time at Kentucky was the highest point of their career and will be willing to help if asked.

Pitino was the best recommendation for Pope’s hiring . He will do anything for his Captain to succeed.

Calipari ability to recruit , connect with media are elite. In an era of NiL , Kentucky will need power, money and influence to continue to be an elite and successful program. We will need to keep all Calipari players close to our program. I could see Calipari be an ambassador for Kentucky program, like the original plan was after he retires. If we are smart we will welcome him with cheers in Rupp and prepare a nice festivity for him with a film and nice dinner before the Arkansas game. We want to keep him close and don’t burn that bridge.
It will play great in media and also for the future of the program. The state is not that wealthy and we need all the influence and positive media we can get.

Very good post and I agree with everything you say. Our fan fanbase would look very petty if we boo Calapari on his first return to Rupp Arena. Booing Cal would not play well with the media and the press. Also, I feel that for all of the good things that Coach Call did for our state such as fund raisers for flood and tornado calamities this is another good reason Coach Call should receive nothing less than a standing ovation.

I agree as well. As much as I disliked Cal's downfall his last 5 years , He is gone now... it's time to remember the good times. I won't boo him. I really wish he would have just retired but it's a bunch of money to turn down that arkansas offered him and it got us out of the contract.

I am hoping he continues his slide and then returns to be the Ambassador he should have been. He would be a home run GM of the team. He’s born for that role. He can get the money flowing, let the staff identify who they want and wine and dine them, set up NIL, etc….

I’ve said all along that it was Cal’s time to quit coaching and time for him to fill the ambassador role. Cal is a genius when it comes to marketing and glamour. We were almost always in the prime time slot every night we played. I mean even practices and everything we did were televised.

Having him right next to the program would’ve been great for recruiting, of course with someone else coaching.

I don’t see him coming back to do something like that unless Mitch Barnhart leaves soon but it’ll never happen with him as the AD.

I do, however, believe Cal would agree to do it in a heart beat as it’s obvious he’s not happy at Arkansas. When you’ve already been to the top of the mountain, there’s nowhere else to go.

Fans like this are soft, this guy is coming into Rupp to try and beat UK. He's at a rival SEC school, he's the opponent. How many UK fans cheered when Pinto returned as the Louisville coach? Cal will be given his flowers from BBN and UK once he is retired, but until then he's the enemy

I have to still believe his ego like Pitinos would LOVE to be successful in the NBA. I realize that time has passed though.

I could not disagree with this more . First off it was listed in the contract (that was breached ) as “special assistant to the Athletics Director “ . We all know how he and Mitch feel about each other. And secondly, I don’t believe any basketball coach would want Cal looking over their shoulder and meddling in their program. He absolutely would not know his place and would think he’s in charge. He’s not going to accept a back seat to anyone. Narcissists don’t do that .

Yea fuq Barnhart... he's a bad AD and I'll argue it till I die. Hired Billy G when he should have hire Cal then....or even after Billy G could have hired Pitino away from UofL back to UK. Hired Joker, Hired Billy G. Hired Elzy, gave dumb conteact to CAL and Stoops. He really is 50/50 on big decisions...I feel like anybody could do that hence Barnhart is bad AD or below average. Held us back on initial NIL start up, held us back on alcohol sales money and fun 😁, I like pope but why didn't we even give Bruce pearl light of day or Oats...both teams would be our team right now since the whole team follows the coach now days. We would have auburns team right now. That's a title !!!!
I repeat had we Hired Bruce, there's a good chance we have that team and its a title...but we didn't even give him the light of day... why? Because of history??? Dude this is 2024 NIL legal pay players...fuq that just win and do what it takes.

Sorry for rant barhnart sux

I’ll take Barnhart over Cal every freaking day.

Cal should be given a special award by the SEC this year.

He is the only coach in the history of the SEC to destroy two proud SEC basketball programs in one year.

Single handidly.

He needs to be recognized for an accomplishment like that when he comes to Rupp Arena.

That's all well and good but regardless, he's gonna be boo'ed unmercifully as are our former players. I didn't like it when we did it to Bradshaw in New York vs Ohio State and he went on to have the best game I've seen of his college career and I won't like it Saturday. There's a lot of bad blood and we Kentuckians know a thing or two about feuds. In an ideal world I'd agree OP but this world is anything but ideal. Jmho.

Duke also controls the NBA (Adam Silver) USA Basketball (Grant Hill) and CBB media (so many I can't list them all but Bilas, Seth Davis, Jay Williams and Grant Hill to name a few) which is a huge advantage to help their program recruit elite players with promises and promotions and hype or protect if needed with the talking heads in the media. It's a great advantage. Doesn't mean they don't have talented teams/players either-but facts are facts.

I like you man, but this take is so deluded.

Calipari makes every program he's run all about Calipari. From day 1 here he was all about re-shaping the program in his image. He's all about taking personal credit (even undeservedly for the accomplishments of others) and he didn't hesitate to dispense with traditional ways we'd done things in favor of his way. Do you really think that guy would wanna come back in a role devoted to making some OTHER coach at UK look good?

I could see someone like Joe B Hall or even Tubby embracing that role. But Cal? Not the slightest chance in hell.

I had no idea Adam Silver was from Duke.

Hold on, I'm gonna go dig up David Sterns body and pull a "Weekend at Bernies", see if I can sneak him past an NBA front office that's clearly asleep at the job.

One if the dumbest post of all time .. HOF level … hopefully HOF level trolling but I’m unfamiliar with the OP

okay? what does that have to do with anything I said. Screw em both... barnhart is the reason we had Cal 3 years over due... Barnhart is the reason we had Billy G Era and i could go on about the other sports. I like cal, he will be appreciated one day... that said, he sucked his last 5 years and dragged it on due to a lifetime contract from barnhart.... if it wasn't for that contract, we all know he would have only got into 2 or maybe 3 years of the 5/6 year bad skid of 1 tourney win. Dumb contract..... if Cal was going to leave us for UCLA, let him f/n go for real, he wouldn't have, and barnhart dumb and folded to the bluff. ... then finally learned and called the bluff this time when Cal tried to use Arkansas. Barnhart ... he got lucky AF that Cal nulled his contract talking to Ark and gave us a sliver to get out of paying him.

I’m all kinds of excited to watch Calipari help Kentucky by taking an L Feb 1st.

If it makes him feel better about his impending loss he can kneel during the National Anthem beforehand. Just for old times’ sake.

Maybe not but I personally think he would be really good in that role. Maybe when he’s done coaching he wouldn’t be that way. I think everyone wants to be accepted at a final spot one day and he would probably want that here where he won his title and spent more time than anywhere else. It’s fine if you disagree but many agree with me as well.

Exactly he was horrible the last 5+ years here. I'm just not ready for him to be associated with our program and to be honest I don't know if I ever will be!

I’m not much of a Mitch Barnhart fan either. But I can’t stand Cal . Cal has had a terrible season and we have had surprising success this year . That is the ONLY reason Cal has kept his mouth shut . If things had gone like Cal thought and expected, he would be crowing and strutting like a peacock and taking pot shots at us every time he was in front of a microphone. These bleeding hearts have forgotten about that.
