Duke is still great because , Coach K legacy, methods, and resources are still being used.
K was a workaholic. He liked to control everything so the chances for mistakes decrease and for success increased. He would keep notes on planning preparations, notes on the weekly execution of the plan, notes on the game, notes on how ref call the game, etc. after the game or season he would revisit with the staff the notes and the plan. His military discipline translated into a well oiled basketball machine. With time his influence grew that he would name his AD, successors ,etc…Coach S is very familiar with his methods of preparation and also recruiting channels and methods. Duke players over 40 years are all engaged and behind S because K planned for it and wanted his legacy and influence to continue in a successful Duke program.
Kentucky Rupp’s influence was reduced after the shaving points scandal … and legacy completed after Coach JB tenure ended and Pat Riley went the NBA route.
Now we have two branches Pitino and Calipari that we could exploit . Instead of booing them or antagonize them we should keep both closed to the program. Both of them have pluses and minuses but both of them know that their time at Kentucky was the highest point of their career and will be willing to help if asked.
Pitino was the best recommendation for Pope’s hiring . He will do anything for his Captain to succeed.
Calipari ability to recruit , connect with media are elite. In an era of NiL , Kentucky will need power, money and influence to continue to be an elite and successful program. We will need to keep all Calipari players close to our program. I could see Calipari be an ambassador for Kentucky program, like the original plan was after he retires. If we are smart we will welcome him with cheers in Rupp and prepare a nice festivity for him with a film and nice dinner before the Arkansas game. We want to keep him close and don’t burn that bridge.
It will play great in media and also for the future of the program. The state is not that wealthy and we need all the influence and positive media we can get.
