Cal on Skal last night.

Cal didn't just now figure this out. It's just that he knew: Skal's future and this team's present is less promising without him developing in the paint.

This team's "present" is clearly better with him OUT of the paint.

I agree with this take....
1. We're getting some post presence from Poythress...but we need post presence to be our best shot at NCAA title and Cal was trying to get Skal to bring this part to our team. Skal wasn't going to succeed in that role..so Cal scrapped it and Skal will face up and shoot more jumpers.
2. Skal also was benched moreso for his awful defense and rebounding more than anything. And even though he is shot blocking better...he's still a poor positional defensive player in the post and a terrible rebounder which Cal can't hide any more.

I'm totally fine with how Cal handled this situation and if Skal leaves...so be it. Let the next team have one dimensional shooter who is scored upon/rebounded over. We have the inside guys next year to not really miss Skal IMO and I'd hate to lose minutes for Willis/Lee (he needs to come back) along with Bam/SKJ/Humphries/Tai.

We will have to see if this changes anything with his playing time. Cal said after the game that while he is going to change how he plays him, if he doesn't defend and rebound he still cant play him. I completely agree with how cal has handled him this year. He has been trying to make him a complete player, which will serve him way better in the league.
He will play a little more away from the hoop but if you are 7ft and don't grab 1 rebound in 18 minutes you still have a ways to go.
This is not on Cal, this is on Skal and if wants to be the best player he can be he HAS TO REBOUND AND DEFEND.

Didn't think he would block over 2 in any game this year. His timing and intensity were putrid until last night. Hope he can continue to give opponents something to think about on drives. Big step imo.

Skal's problem isn't his offense. It's his rebounding. I don't know if I've ever seen a player his size that is a worse rebounder. It's all about his "want to" to rebound. Sure he's not in the best rebounding position since he's staying 15 feet out but he should still get 6 boards a game at the very least. To not get a rebound against a terrible and small Mizzu team is pretty bad.

But still, it was great seeing Skal so happy last night. That looked like the most fun he's had all year and it helped his play.

If people really believe that Cal realized he had to bring skal out and he was ruining him down low must still not get him
It's coach speak. He said ulis mentioned it to him so he tried it. Ok. Smh

He is building up his players. KAT got two fouls for getting off the bus last season until January. His timing was off in the post. By the end of the season he was unstoppable and look how it has helped him now. Cal probably already knows that Skals guardian is gonna make him turn pro no matter what so he is trying to rebuild Skals confidence and reputation. I'm fine with it because its helping us win. Remember when he pulled Patterson away from the basket. It helped him improve his game.

A 6'11' kid that weighs 190 pounds will never be a back to the basket guy in the NBA. So, that point is moot. Any top coach will take whatever type of player a guy is and improve on that, not try to make a square peg fit in a round hole. Cal finally admitted that last night, which I am happy to see.
They said the same thing about Davis and his weight his freshman year. Besides, imo, Skal's weight trying to play a back to the basket game isn't as bad of a weakness as his ball handling skills trying to play a face up game.

In the NBA, he'll actually have to create and do more than just catch and shoot if he wants to face up.

I think his timing on this is perfect. Showing some humility in reference to Skal and the need to change the way he's coaching him, the same day KU's 4 primary players, I mean Self, said he needed to trim his rotation which excludes 2 big name recruits...right before we go into Lawrence no less.

Really shows the contrast in styles. Genius.
