Cal Lite

Yeah....that was some really bad coaching and execution down the stretch of 2 minutes

1. Not switching a simple ball screen ....two players follow the ballhandler....that led to an open 3pt make by Houston4
2. Foul 30 feet away....two FT with stop clocked
3. TO on inbound pass that cut lead to 1 pt
4. And a typical Cal special....that last play for Flagg to clear out down 1 pt.....so he flashes to the side outside of 3pt line, clear out to draw up a play for an iso for Flagg vs. a plus defender with Houston backside help waiting in the lane...no player movement, no cutting, no ball movement....just iso play and Flagg isn't a great driver of the ball...(at least post him up vs. driving it).
5. Final play of game....down 3pts with 3.7 seconds....throw a hail mary to other end of court that led to a loose ball scrum and fall away heave that went over the backboard from 35 ft.....Why not try hitting a guy in backcourt and letting him put down some dribble/or 2nd pass to cutting player... and shoot a shot going toward the rim

Let’s get our jabs in while we can, because Scheyer has the financial backing to put a title contender on the court every year going forward!
Yep, I agree- winning the title is so hard, Izzo, a HOF coach has coached 30 years and has 1 title

Kind of unfair to Cal.. he at least had to earn his wins.

Coaching for a program that hands you a 35mil budget, along with officiating help, isnt all that difficult to produce wins. Id actually argue that if this sport didn't try and protect Duke so much, we don't get screwed against Wisconsin and likely go undefeated and Cal gets a 2nd title (even if his coaching is suspect).

*really not trying to defend Cal, but I just refuse to give the Duke program any due for what we've seen over the past 20 years.

I mean is winning the elite 8 game to make a final four not a big game?

I get the premise of the thread but making the final four is a huge deal here at UK. I assume that is the case at Duke too.
It is a big deal but Duke was stacked. Their team was constructed about as well as you can expect. All the money in the world doesn’t guarantee that everything meshes like it did for this team.

This choke job is worse than the 2015 Cats because they were sailing in this game and should have won going away.

Winning an elite 8 game is good but.. the team he had was loaded with 3 of the top 9 draft picks. Don’t you feel with the lead they had late it was an epic collapse.

Kinda hard to believe Duke will have many teams better than this team. I don’t see Boozer being better than Flagg. I think Scheyer just depends on Flagg to do to much!!

Of course it was. It was a massive choke job.

My point was he already won a big game before this massive loss.

He has so much money and nonsense behind him he's gonna keep making runs.

He may luck up one day but this team was loaded. Almost ever game they lost all Scheyer would do is go iso with Flagg. Maybe ever loss he did this late. Coaching does matter.

If they are really spending that amount of money they say then he only has another choke job or 2 before people handing that money to him start wondering if he is the man for the job.

I dont understand the logic of just hiring guys because they played at the school. I think Duke could have done way better than S honestly.

I agree he will be removed if he doesn't win a title by year 5 or 6 at latest.

They should have ran the Villanova play, quick screen to a shooter and let them go downhill for the shot.

Maybe.... but as someone earlier alluded... Making the Final Four is a big deal ... so, if he keeps doing it, he'll get some time. How long we'll be debating....

Hopefully, but Scheyer is in his third year of coaching. I’d expect him to improve, unlike Cal who is approaching his 40th season as a head coach. Scheyer could just as easily be Ryan Day, who couldn’t win big games until all of a sudden he couldn’t lose them.

It is. But, when you piss away a championship appearance. It’s gotta leave a bad taste in your mouth.
