Cal gets bounced we go zone

Lol cant wait to read threads on this.

Would imagine Cal would've done the same. Has more to do with the officiating and the fact that we have two frontcourt players with three fouls and one with two fouls. That kind of situation tends to force any coach's hand.

I know the OP is baiting a little, and I also agree the foul trouble may have forced Cal to play it regardless.

I do hope it makes Cal a little less hesitant to use it in certain situations though.

Man to man needs to be our bread and butter. I am 100% with Cal on that. Given our athletes, we should be able to force our will most of the time, and that is what we want to do.

Still, having a zone in your pocket that you can pull out in strategic situations isn't a bad thing IMO.

Had a chance to win. Today we won. By a lot. Need to use it when you need it.

Yeah, and KU is a lot tougher and better a team and a much better shooting team than SC. There is a reason they have won so many in a row at home...so having a shot to win in Lawrence on the last possession is about as good as one could ask this bunch to do IMO. This is not 2012 or 2015 UK.

Zone is strong weapon against certain teams and matchups. You make WINNING GAMES more diffucult if you refuse to use zone. Some teams only lose to zone. Use zone if the team your playing is poor against it. Period. End of story to me.

I knew this would become a thread. Nevermind we just beat South Carolina on the road by 27. Let's make this about Cal and zone. Good God!

Yeah, KU is a lot better shooting team than SC. Going zone against KU would have...well not went well to put it politely.

Our zone looked good today because South Carolina doesn't shoot well.

I'd like us to mix it up a little bit more but Man D is the best.

I agree with the KU game and the missed shots today.

Our zone was effective on paper but it is very porous and we did not rebound well out of it.

Other than not making shots, the best thing was SC probably not preparing for it whatsoever.

Good thing our man-to-man defense held Kansas to 47% from 3.

Zone would have gotten lit up, as well. But our big men might have avoided the ridiculous foul trouble they got into. And Murray wouldn't have gotten abused. Zone needs to always be available when needed.

And we all know the reason KU has won so many games in a row. Has to do with the aforementioned foul trouble for our bigs.

That's why mixing it up helps. It makes the other team make adjustments they may not be prepared to make.

Having the option of going to a couple different zone looks is absolutely essential for THIS team. We don't have a lot of quality front court depth on the bench and from everything we've seen so far this year, foul trouble is going to remain an issue.
To be clear, I still favor man-to-man as the best defense in basketball but, playing it every minute or every game gives your opponents a break. they don't have to prepare for multiple defenses so, they can concentrate on only having to go against man-to-man.
Just my thoughts.

I don't care whose idea it was. I'm just glad we played some zone and we looked damn good doing it. I've been calling for us to play a little zone for several years, and this year especially considering our thin front court and constant foul issues. Bout damn time.
