Cal encouraging Briscoe to pull up and...

I would love to see that change. Briscoe was amazing with shooting the basketball in that Jordan All-star game. He looks awful shooting the ball now because he has become one dimensional against sagging defenses in still trying to get all the way to the basket. Ulis too, in the beginning of the Ohio State game he made a quick move for a pull-up jumper and I thought (Duke all over again, they can't stay in front of our guards). Then, instead he started taking 3's, and going completely away from the short range game. It is so clearly observable that our strength is quick guard play.

Cal doesn't want him driving to the basket and getting fouled because he can't make free throws. If he goes to the line it's almost like a turnover.

So the solution is for him to pull up and shoot a 15 footer which is the same distance as a free throw? Makes sense!!!!!

Briscoe should not be allowed to shoot ever until he shows he can hit at a decent clip.

Yes Cal...tell someone who cant shoot to take a difficult Jumper - a Pull-up long 2.

Man, this guy is a offensive mastermind.

I can't agree with this idea. Dude puts dents in the backboard on his jumpers and chips the paint off the rim on his FTs. I want him shooting layups. If he gets fouled he gets fouled.

Still don't understand how the hell he became such an awful shooter so quickly.
I know he's never put this much energy into defense and he put on some muscle over the summer. Seems like he's lost all touch on his shot.

backboards are scared shitless

I'm speculating that Cal thinks he has the drive to the basket down, and now wants him to add another tool to his toolbox (pull-up jumper). It can only help us come March, and him come draft day.

Question is, if he can hit half the pull up shots, does he start shooting FTs that way?

Even during senior year in high school I don't remember him being a good shooter. Not sure before that.

Briscoe is like Wayne Turner. Wayne became one of the most productive players ever in the Ncaa tourny. Now that was over 4 years, but i believe in this day and time Briscoe is close to the leve Wayne was by the time he left.

For me by the end of the year if Briscoe is playing on Waynes level after 4 years then we should be good.

But Briscoe will have to get that 15 ft jumper Wayne developed. Also At the end didnt Wayne get in the high 60s to low 70s at the line? I know at first Wayne was a lot worse then Briscoe , also if he did not have a lay up it was not happening.

Sounds like Briscoe but not as bad. Really think by the end of this year Briscoe could be on Wayne's SN year level. His def is there, i think he needs to finish a little better to get to waynes level. But not to far off. Passing and ball handling really close to Wayne. The biggest gap is the mid range shot and free throws.

I think thats a good comparison and think if Briscoe hits waynes level by the end of the year he will be fine.

I think it's a safe bet Cal's telling all the players, "when Briscoe shoots, everybody crash the boards." Hell, if he hits a few, we're gold, and the ones he does miss, and he will of course, I'm sure Cal is thinking/hoping, and telling, our bigs to crash the boards.

If you watched him in high school he is damn good at the pull up from around 12 feet , just like he shot well from the free throw line in high school . hell I saw him make 22 free throws in a row with my own eyes. Just because he is struggling doing something doesn't mean he can't. In reality when Briscoe is done playing NBA he will be a 70% foul shooter and around a 35 % from 3 IMO. While it would be nice for him to show this his one year here make no mistake he will show it eventually. Same with Skal , that kid is oozing talent but he is just having an adjustment period . None the less SKal has more potential then any big Cal has brought in with the exception of AD. As a UK fan all I care about is the kids start to show their potential as we head to March and they always do under Cal.

Hmmmm.
Don't ever shoot; until he can hit at a decent clip.
smh

Yes it's called practice. I would not allow him to drive to the hole in practice at all instead force him to pull up and shoot the 12-16 footer over and over again until his arms fell off. Until he showed the ability to hit that shot at a decent clip he would not be given the green light to shoot in games. 2-3 a game sure, but not much more than that. Smh that I had to explain that in further detail.

Cal continuously yells for them to drive the ball. He just wants Briscoe to add the pull up to his game so they can't sit on his drive to the rim. Expand his game, not go away from his strength which is getting to the rim and finishing through contact. This isn't junior high ball in the 70's. You take the players strengths and build on them making them that much better. Surprised that has to be explained in further detail.

You didn't explain anything Einstein. I know what the hell expanding his game is. However I am not going to let a player practice expanding his game during an actual game at my teams expense. Once he shows in practice that he can knock that shot down at a decent clip only then will I be encouraging him to take the shot at will during games. Until then he takes a few but not much more.

i think Cal may see him in practice and he may know more about coaching than you. Just a guess

U guys point to practice/high school/warms up WAY too often.

Its all irrelevant. All that matters is in-game results. Briscoe has shown during games he can not shoot. Not to mention its ugly coming out of his hands & most of his misses are ugly bricks.

Cal once again showing off his innovative offensive mind.

So it's obvious you feel Cal is not the coach for UK; who would wish for at UK? who do you think should have been hired instead?

Not sure how your comeback countered my quote at all. Perhaps he does hit them well in practice and cal is wanting him to take those shots in the games as well. So far I have not seen briscoe shoot many shots at all in the 12-16 foot range.

If he is not hitting them in practice or heaven forbid not even practicing them then he should not be encouraged to take them in a game. You don't have to be a 7 figure earning head coach to know that.

Did you actually see Wayne play?

Do you think changing his body over the summer could effect his shooting? Just wondering.

If he's wide open and everyone else is covered, he doesn't really have a choice. Unless you suggest we stop playing him?
