Cal buyout is easily doable according to this guy

For Cal to be fired there are two options. The Crafts pony up the cash after just donating $7.5 million for Nutter Field House renovations or Cal works with the school on a lower buyout and takes another job that offsets it quite a bit. If those two things don't happen this just isn't going to be a priority for a University that has a mission to advance education and healthcare within the state.

Cal and the school negotiating a lower buyout would go a long way to fostering goodwill and polishing Cal's image with the fans and mainstream public. All centers of influence are united in the conclusion he has to go based on results. Accepting an ungodly sum of money for piss poor performance does not help Cal in the public's eye. He comes across as a money grubbing slug. Cal is supposed to be the benevolent coach who made it about the players and the fortune of their families. Being tarred as a grifter grafting himself to the backs of the players and program like a leech for obscene profit would befoul that reputation.

That money is not earmarked for the athletic department. It goes to the university itself. The budget for this year is here.

I've said it a million times today, but finding this buyout money is not going to be a priority right now given the larger mission of the university. The basketball team made the school a little over $9 million. The university got over $500 million in research grants. UK Healthcare had revenue of almost $4 billion. Tuition brought in about $600 million. Those three are the main purpose of the University and where the priorities lie. That's what the Board of Trustees and Capilouto really care about.

Thanks for the info ukcatz12.

Am I correct in stating that none of the dollars received from the SEC are funneled back to the athletic department by the university? If these dollars are needed by UK to help fund/run the university, I wonder what UK did before this money became available from the SEC

That’s incorrect. The money from the SEC deal goes to the athletic department. It’s a massive source of revenue for them. While it might be part of an overall report by the university, it’s the athletic department money.

Regardless of what the priorities of the university are, outside of things like bond capacity, the athletic department works within the walls of its own division. UK Athletics is self sustaining and receives zero money from the university. Mitch figuring out a buyout has zero impact on any other area of the university.

The University wouldn't be paying Cal's buyout. The athletic department would.

Folks have got to start separating the two.

In fact, the athletic department gives the university a couple mill a year to pay down debt on a big ass classroom building.

Noble and generous cause I suppose, but that couple mill a year could easily help pay the buyout.

The article linked in the tweet is most likely dead accurate. The optics of a public university paying a basketball coach $35 million to leave are awful. And he lays out quite clearly how there are other priorities for the university as a whole right now. I really think the only way we have a new coach next year is if Cal leaves himself.
Agree, plus UK would also likely have to pay a buyout for the new coach if he’s currently under contract elsewhere like Pearl, Drew, Oates, etc. That could be an additional $7 to $15 million depending on the coach.

Great insight!
