I think unc has promised a starting position plus shots and from sounds of it Coach Pope does neither of those. He does have someone in his camp that’s playing both sides and throwing around a lot of smoke screens I’m told but the thoughts around UK is it’s uncheat, family works at uk and knows some former players along with some media personnel. Take it for what it’s worth, just curious if we go after any other hs guys or hitting the portal harder now.

Serious question......when was the last time a package deal actually panned out?
If so, why hasn't he signed already ? I mean would a package deal not be together ? I think the package deal is BS. Remember all of those tweets between Wilson, Johnson, and Lewis ? All of them acting like they would be a package deal ? If so, we wouldn't be hearing UNC is the heavy favorite to land Wilson.
I feel like it actually pans out more often at Duke than we would suspect initially. But you also have to consider how many "package deals" aren't announced ahead of time. And what do you consider family members, such as the Boozers, or the Lawsons (not twins) to Memphis, or the Porters (not twins) to Mizzou, etc.
In 2022 Duke got 4 of the top 22 recruits in the nation, I'm sure some of them were a "package" whether formally or informally. I don't think the "camps" of these elite recruits really like to speak that way though, especially in the NIL era, not sure how much it hurts/helps their leverage with such things
Just because you're a "package deal" doesn't mean you want to commit at the same exact time as someone else. Recruits want the solo attention as well, they want to negotiate their NIL opportunities, etc. How you perceive a package deal might be different than how the recruit (and their camp) perceive it. I think there's probably a lot more package deals than we think, especially when you consider it could be a package with a player and a coach, not just another recruit
I think UK always had to go after a top portal PF, regardless of whether Wilson committed or not. But, of course, they need at least two guys who can man the PF spot and really both need to be good enough to play right away. I'd also still like to see UK find a good high school PF prospect if one with a lot of upside is still out there. I wouldn't care about any recruiting ranking, just a very projectable kid. I guess European players are an option too.
He has had plenty of time for his spotlight. I could see a week, maybe even a month after one player commits, but this long ?
Does anyone have any doubt pope will find an excellent replacement or two? Actually I think the 2nd transfer portal big pf should be a sophomore so that he can develop at uk for a couple of years but still help us some immediately.

That's true but a lot of the time twins usually go to the same school together. Heck we had the Harrison twins, pretty sure Alex Poythress and his twin sister went to UK at the same time, and look at all those set of twins Stanford had over the years.

If he chooses UNC, to me, that confirms he’s more about himself than winning because you’re right they are a dumpster fire
I think it was (Hurl) Coach Hurl(Y) at UConn that said sometime in the past year or two that he was looking for a certain kind of player that had both talent, but a certain mindset, I cant remember how exactly he put it ... but that it was a certain kind of player that had a different kind of attitude and mindset rather than it purely being all about raw, untested talent.
I think that is the unspoken kind of thing Coach Pope is looking for.
Match both as much talent, but with an emphasis on "the right kind of player" (whatever that reason he may determine) may be, and have THAT KIND of player come here to play for him and Kentucky.
It seems to me that is the kind of player we have always needed at Kentucky to overcome the opposition, why we've had more success than anyone else, because it's more of a matter of taking pride, having HEART, GUTS, determinat5ion to make oneself better and the will to do it, and of course, having talent is another major factor as well.
When you factor all that together, in today's day and age, in this era, having someone that truly understands that, it makes all the difference in being success.
Look at IU. They have been irrelevant for so long, after all the success they used to have. It's not just getting the right coach. Go long enough without getting the right kind of players at a blue blood basketball university, and you will end up like IU. No matter the coach.

All this hype for a guy who is going to average 11 and 5.
IMO next year Garrison will be one of the best stretch 4's in the country. I'm not sure how more people don't see the huge upside for him. He fits what coach Pope wants from his big's. Has a nice stroke and his frame is going to easily add 10-20 pounds of muscle if he get's in the weight room. His improvement this year in limited minutes has been pretty impressive. I know CMP is very high on him. If he works out like I hope he is the starting 4 from the start next year and Wilson would have to deal with coming off the bench. Could play into his pivot to UNC where they have no interior competition for minutes.
You are exactly right. A player who behaves like this has a chance to cause all kinds of issues if their play isn't what's expected,

First off, talent worked really well here the first 5 of those 10 years. 1 championship, 3 FFs with one runner-up, and 3 E8s. I wanted Cal gone starting in 2019 but let's not go brain-dead and act like talent didn't work. It only stopped working here when the coach stopped prioritizing winning over draft picks.
So yes, give Pope talent and I bet his system looks incredible. This isn't Hollywood or 1992 anymore. You aren't taking a ragtag bunch of players and winning titles...and nowhere did the guy you quote insinuate you only need talent.

We'll see. lol. Carr is playing it this year as a 5th year guy. Garrison has a lot more upside as a sophomore and should be a lot better in every facet after another year or 2 under Pope than Carr is plus he has some dog in him.

A hybrid is fine but chasing talent after NIL will get you a job in Arkansas pretty quick. And he clearly said a mixture is good but his first part clearly said Duke is number 2 without coaching. I just see him as a five . Unless maybe we are in a zone . I don’t believe he would ever be able to defend at the four.
I can see the concern defensively but he's going to be better than Carr is at that with more experience. It's not like he's got to guard 3's that can shoot the 3 and drive it. Power forwards in today's game are more perimeter players on offense than ever before. He'll play the 5 if we don't get one in the portal since I don't expect Moreno to be ready to go as a frosh in the SEC.
If Garrison is the 4, you aren’t going to be a top 25 offense next year imo. Unless Garrison magically comes back from the summer as Kristaps Porzingis.
