MJ mentioned some renovations that are coming to Rupp Arena early in today's show. Said that Big Bertha will be replaced. Anyone have a link to an article on this? Didn't see anything on the first two pages here. Thanks.

They haven't green lighted it yet but an article in the LH a few days ago said they are looking at a new state if the art scoreboard, wifi and digital advertising system for Rupp.

Could that be the replacement Cal was talking about? :)

The Herald-Leader, Rupp Arena could soon see technology upgrades, including ribbon boards around the second tier and a new center-hanging video scoreboard. Officials are looking into the costs and the benefits of the new additions before a board meeting next month. One thing to consider: the ribbon boards, though expensive to install, would provide much more revenue through advertising.

As for the new centerpiece, The Herald reports Rupp Arena’s roof isn’t equipped to hold a new scoreboard, so it would take some re-engineering before one will be dangling above the court. But like the ribbon boards, advertising on the new scoreboard will bring in plenty of new revenue to help cover the cost of the project.

You have to keep up with the times. Rupp Arena was state of the art in the seventies but has not kept up with other innovations and has fallen waaaay behind other, newer arenas. As much as I love our dear old home court, it is past time that we made some changes to get us to the 21st century.

I was listening to sports radio this morning, the conversation was about low student attendance at sporting events.

The poll was done by origins a sports marketing school and a main reason polled was lack of wifi in stadiums.

So, interesting u brought up the wifi. Definitely is a big feature u don't see often.

If UK or Rupp Arena-Lex Center offered some real-time interactive stats, team trivia, game facts, etc. I could see wi-fi being a plus. But, I go to Rupp to watch the game and take in the atmosphere. It's like a vacation away from tweets, social media posts and everything that detaches me from life. UK basketball is real and happening in the real world. The last thing I would want to do is go to a game and have my head stuck in a personal device. And frankly, those that want to do that stuff can stay home as far as I'm concerned. I'll be there to cheer on the CATS!

So true. You know what else gets my gourd? Those damned horseless carriages. You know what I mean. You load the family up in the wagon for a sleepy Sunday ride and one of these kids in a fancy motorcar zooms right by you and scares the hell out of your team. Don't even get me started on these new fangled auto-flushing sheeters.

People enjoy sharing their experiences through social media. For every fan attending the game, there are 100 more at home who enjoy seeing close up pics, etc.

Really, it's a great marketing tool for the school when fans at events have access to the Internet.

It's hard to believe that a new video scoreboard would weigh a lot more than Bertha. She looks like a heavy chunk up there.

"A center-hanging scoreboard with additional screens also would lead to more advertising revenue for the center. The cost of installing the scoreboard would be recouped in additional ad revenue in just a few years, Burdette said.

But installing a center-hanging scoreboard would mean re-engineering the roof structure of Rupp Arena. A modern scoreboard is roughly 65,000 pounds.

In addition, only certain areas of Rupp's roof can hold the maximum of 150,000 pounds. By enlarging the "grid" of where overhead structures such as lighting can be placed, the arena could attract more diverse entertainment, Owen said."

Would take a tad bit of engineering but can be done.

The skeleton of a system like Bertha, built in the 70s, is probably some kind of wood.

The new video screens are made up of a bunch of little LED displays that are all incredibly dense with metal components.

Using your sarcastic logic, we should all be demanding a parking space for our "horseless carriages" inside Rupp Arena.
Good Lord...how did we ever enjoy a sporting event before the internet and cell phones???
How did society ever progress before we were all narcissists?

And to those wondering why the roof needs reinforced to support a new scoreboard to replace Big Bertha? I highly suspect Bertha is made mostly of aluminum. It's much lighter (relatively) than a new four-sided center court hung video/scoreboard would be.

RIP big fella, I cherished each and every banana-ball that trampolined from your glorious head...

Good, I live in constant fear that that monstrosity will plummet onto the court at tip off, taking away much of what I hold dear.

A few years ago I went to my first UK game. I decided to take my brother instead of my wife due to he was the one that turned me on to UK sports and he had never been to a game either. I regret that decision. He spent half the time on his phone and I regreted my choice.
