Boysssss it’s gonna be a long season…

I agree with the OP regarding the SEC pounding our bigs down low and being more athletic. But, what he doesn’t take into consideration is that we have a Coach that has played and knows how to play as a big. And I have a feeling that he will play zone and trap some to disrupt the other team. We have found a diamond in the rough in Pope. IMO
Someone who actually understands the post a little bit. Andrew carr is gonna be punished on defense. When krissa comes into the game he’s not gonna be able to stay in front of anybody. Almonor isn’t going to be able to guard anyone. He is so slow. I’m just saying what I see and people don’t wanna hear it lol. Can we score? Absolutely. But defense is gonna be an issue I believe. Hope I’m wrong

Yeah but not every team is overly athletic in college ball. That’s a handful of teams.

Brandon Garrison, Otega Oweh, Collin Chandler and Mr Butler beg to differ!!!

Those 4 alone are MORE than athletic enough!! And Jaxon Robinson ain’t no Cameron Mills!!!

This team has enough of everything to be competitive with ANY team we play, even including Duke!!

We’ll see if that translates to big time wins. I have a feeling it will.
Hey, have you seen Cameron Mills at the buffet, fighting for chicken wings and prime rib? Apparently not. He has/had mad athletic skills and has been known to grab double servings of bread pudding in the blink of an eye.

It's going to take fans a couple years to learn how to trust the process again.... no more revolving door of players.

Villanova never did out athlete any team. 4 final fours. And 2 natty's. This team wasn't built to awe anybody. It was built to play together, work together, and win together. And if we think these last 2 natty's were won by team out athlete'n the field. This forum might not be your cup of tea. Js

Defense is an argument that can be made about a team that has played together. Not enough evidence yet, to establish "We are gonna get our butt's taken to the woodshed, night in and night out". Come on OP. Give it until end of Nov atleast.

All 4 of these natty's were won by two schools flat filling up the nets and playing good rock solid team ball? Castle? A athletic freak? Dante inferno a athletic freak?

The list of those players on them 4 championships. Brunson? Hard nose, hard working, bucket getter. That struggles in the league to out athlete anybody. Anybody lol

They remind me of some of Pitino’s early teams. We may get beat by some super athletic teams. We also might come out and light up some LSU type Shaq/Chris Jackson type teams.

I know one thing for sure….. all those highly rated athletes got us consistently bounced in the first round by slow footed players from Oakland.

Don’t even get me started on things like actual out of bounds plays

Good.

All the fast footed athleticism and talent we've had hasn't amounted to much.

We look like a team Cal loses to round about March.

Those teams don't win anything that matters either though. If your goal is to win a game or 2, great.

If you want to make a final four or win number 9 that type of team isn't gonna cut it in March either.

I'm just going to enjoy the ride with low expectations. It's going to take time for this team to gel, all I really want is fun basketball. If I'm not wanting to scratch my eyes out like I did watching Cal-coached offenses over the last few years I'll call it a win for this season. Think Pope deserves at least a year to figure things out before everyone starts freaking out

221-119 Thats 110.5-59.5 or a victory margin of 51 points an ex. Tough post OP
Scary because Krissa didnt play the 1st ex game and Williams basically missed the 2nd.

Get them both in there to start the season and watch out!

I think you are wrong. The backcourt of Butler/Oweh will be one of the best defensively
in the country. Williams is a strong post defender

People need to get out of the “need nba athleticism and talent to have a good season” mentality. We aren’t playing all one on one with minimum off ball movement other than floppy action.

Villanova won a title and went to final 4s with similar talent.

Kerr has been to a F4 (edit: top 5 team, they missed the F4). Butler has been to a title game. …… or didn’t they suddenly become significantly more slow footed since leading their teams to final 4 runs? Jaxson Robinson will play in the NBA. Oweh and Garrison were major D1 athletes. Carr played in the ACC and put up solid stat lines against UNC and Duke.

Ppl are overreacting bc “it looks different” due to us playing a style that has less emphasis/showcase on pure athleticism. Our only question mark will be if we can rebound against teams with multiple high level bigs, while we are playing more guard/perimeter based 4 out lineups.

But no complaining from me. Just stating the obvious. We don’t have SEC talent or athleticism. Slow footed. I don’t worry about the offense, although it could struggle against top tier competition as well, but the defense is where we are gonna struggle. And rebounding. But I’ll take a year or 2 of pope getting his players in place over another year of Cows 1 and done early round exits.
How about waiting until there is something to worry about?

I disagree as well. This team has 2 lock down defender guards (not even close to slow of foot), they have a wing that is getting in the passing lanes, they have a 4 that can stretch the floor, get in passing lanes. The days of relying on pure athleticism to try to win a game only to lose game after game after game is over. Passing the ball is faster than any guy dribbling for 25 seconds and chucking balls. This team even on a bad night will be able to stay in games. This team will be able to put on a press, this team will be able play about any style they want to play. Like you saw tonight, even on a bad night we can still get 13 3s and get to the rim. Rebounding and blocking out was horrible tonight. That is what Pope will discuss with the guys the next 5 or 6 days. The allowing some open 3s will be discussed. The breakdowns and such. The taking shots within the offense instead of 3 chucking early on will be discussed. A lot of good to take off of tonight and a lot of good film to break guys down.

Andrew carr is gonna be punished on defense.
Carr would get punished in the paint if he was our big man. (Think Big Z!) Guarding the 4 is different for several reasons. First, there aren’t many athletic offensive juggernauts in college ball. Most have moved to a stretch 4. Pope knew what he was doing by pairing Williams and Carr. Smaller 4’s will struggle guarding Carr.

Ball pressure covers a multitude of defensive issues. We have that in spades with Butler and Oweh. Butler’s man consistently wants to get rid of the ball as fast as possible. His strength and aggressive defense will change games.

This team doesn’t have many pure athletes that we’re used to having. But, they have some basketball players that can put the ball in the basket. Pope will pare down the rotation against Duke. I’m guessing we see 8
players get all the minutes unless there’s some garbage time.

Kerr has been to a final four? News to me

They started off rough but I thought the help defense and hands in the passing lanes were great in the last 30 minutes. Cal teams had more athletes that anyone usually and we were beating D2 teams by 10 in exhibition games in the last few years.

Alabama doesn’t use a ton of athletic players and they’ve won the SEC 3 of the last 4 years from having an elite point guard and shooting all over the court. Butler is not quite elite on offense but he is on defense, and when we are hitting shots we can beat anyone. But if we are not hitting shots we will take some losses.

We can’t guard very well one on one but our help defense looked good and is only gonna get better. We might struggle but we might end up good; it’s honestly too early to tell and that’s me trying my best to not use blue tinted glasses. I think it’s wild to draw a conclusion like OP did from one 10 minute stretch when we looked rough. I was impressed with the overall team defense after that start.

Go cats

You’re not wrong but Alabama is not good on defense at all. They never are. And it hasn’t stopped them from winning the SEC 3 of the last 4 years and making a final four

Defense in college basketball is overrated if you can run an elite offense. We should have been great last year with how much offensive talent we had even with how bad our defense was. The problem was obviously lack of offensive sets and horribly head scratching lineups.

Those Villanova teams had 3 excellent NBA players on them.

They have 4 Thousand Point Scorers on roster - 22 year olds that can be a force offensively, defensively, we will see but they know how to body up better with experienced stronger players

Top 10-15 type team

You do realize that UK has been put out of the tournament by teams that were slow footed, not that athletic but has a good coach and ran a well organized offense and multiple defenses.
