Bottom line Pope has to do something about the defense

We just have a few players that are soft, and struggle with physical play. 1 that if his shot is not falling, disappears. And we struggle to drive under control.... We are who we are... For a team that was thrown together in very little time... We have done remarkable.. Give Pope a few years to recruit the kids he wants, just not who was left... I honestly don't think it's a coaching problem.

This game was lots by poor shot selection, rebounding, and stupid turnovers.
We had fewer turnovers and we had better shooting percentages from 3 and overall than Bama. Oh and we scored 97 points. I agree with rebounding, even though the totals were close it seemed like they got important offensive boards on key possessions. They got to the line a lot more than us and they hit 85% of their FTs, vs 69% on the season. Our PnR defense was typically brutal, though to be fair Bama may be the best in the nation at PnR.

Yep.

We had 2 less turnovers than Bama.

They had 2 more offensive rebounds.

Extra possessions washed there.

We shot slightly better from the field. All of Bama's advantage came from taking 14 more free throws than us.

We weren't good in any defensive facet. We win today if we were good in any single 1 of the 4 factors.
Not just taking 14 more FTs, but hitting way more of them than they have been most of the season. 85% percent today vs sub-70% on the year. If they shoot their season avg that's 5 fewer points, exactly the margin in the game...

No doubt Bama is good but Ky D was lacking I did not see the second half but the big guy Nelson was eating Ky up of course not making excuses Carr and Bulter was playing injured.

Our poor defensive rebounding is making our pedestrian defense look worse with all those extra possessions.

Williams is just pathetic on the glass. I really hoped after his recent strong second half, he found his motor. Wrong.
Analytics show Williams is one of the best rebounders in the nation, which is confusing because you watch the games and you wouldn't think that. My guess is he's just relied on more than most big men to carry the load on rebounding. I can think of at least two long rebounds today where the guards were all focused on blocking out there man and just let the ball go past them to get picked up by Bama. Pope may be telling them to box out and let Amari rebound it, but if he isn't there to get it the rest of the guys aren't prepared to make the play. We also lack the physicality some of these teams have, Bama is really big and athletic.

Did not watch, checked in here just now. My brother texted me the score. Looks like to me the difference in the game was the freethrow line again. Seems like we get fouled not shooting and we continue to get called for fouls when the other team is shooting.

Defense was always gonna be an issue this year. We have 3 good defenders, one of those being a big man. We will continue to have issues with the 4 and 3 spots when we play defense. I saw some highlights and it looks like we also gave up some open 3s, too many it seems.

Just my view from a few minutes of looking at box score and at the highlights I have seen. We have 2 road games in Tennessee I think up next. Better be ready for we could be the team looking at a losing streak.

GO BIG BLUE.

I have been saying this all year. We need to become the best zone team for as many minutes as we can possibly play.

Two reasons so we don’t get in foul trouble due to our unathletic wings, and we would be much better suited guarding the three point line out of the zone then out of man …The reason being is that teams can break us down off the dribble so easy and kick out against the zone maybe we can contain some of that triple penetration keep the other team off the foul line and keep our guys from draw so many unnecessary fouls

The defense is what it is at this point. We simply need to rebound better after misses. Carr and Robinson had 1 rebound each today.

Carr's hurt and never got into a flow because of Nelson's flopping. But 1 board is 1 board. And Robinson is a finesse player but no excuse for a 6'7 wing to not get 5-6 boards a game.

This team was built to outscore the opponents. We are not going to improve much on men to men or staying in front of your men cause personal issue. You cannot improve lateral quickness of a 5year senior like Carr or 4 th year Almanor….

However, we can improve on boxing out , rebounding with two hands and on less stupid fouls and improve our press not so much to creat turnovers but eat in the clock of the other team so we don’t have to guard in half court so long ….That could make a huge difference on marginal games like the ones vs Bama today.

Coach can only do so much. Cannot game-plan players to be better than they are.
He can manage players in-game better than he has been. If it takes a loss for Amari to sit most of a game so that he can reflect on how not having his arms up on defense cost the team, then so be it. Same goes for Kobe who wants to play like Kellan Grady and just stand around when things get physical. Same goes for Lamont when he puts his head down and goes for a heroic 2-pt drive that he routinely gets fitted to his skull.

We played good enough D to win, but not with the stupid decisions we made all game.

Robinsons decision to jack a three in the first half before our team crossed half court was a huge momentum changer. Could have been up 8 or 9, they ended up going on a run.
Do not agree. Carr actually probably shouldn't have played. Not saying he hurt the team, but defense is reaction based and he couldn't do it with his back problems.

He gutted it out but Nelson knew right away his movement wasn't good. Credit to Carr for giving it a go.

My biggest complaint was watching our guys pout instead of battling for the loose balls that allowed Alabama to seal the game with those 3's.

You just have to play good enough defense to score more points than the other team. I’d rather get up and down the court with a chance to make some shots and lose a high scoring game, than rock fight it out and lose a lower scoring game to claim our defense is better. Really hard for good teams to lose two in a row. Bama was in one today. I look for us to have a great response next game. I’m still excited and happy where this team is.

Defense isn’t that bad. Some are too simplistic thinking points allowed determines how good/bad your defense is. Sure they are related some, but so is pace of play. More possessions = more points. Also they are the #1 scoring team in the country, with many teams wanting to slow the pace, but we don’t.

They made 45%, 38% from 3. Nothing great, but not horrible.
They had us on ice skates all game. We all understand it was a high possession game, it's not Alabama's point total that tells the story, it was how easily Alabama scored. They had wide open looks all game.

Bro, the defense is better than last year & really good in stretches. Alabama is an extremely talented offensive team. I guess Alabama's defensive sucked as well?

Do we have to continue to improve defensively? Yes!! But quit being ridiculous simply because we lost.

I know that was the case very early but I haven't seen that tweeted since. They were showing he was a smidge better than oscar. Lmao.

I suspect his rebounding efficiency plummeted. If it hasn't, they need to scrap whatever data they look at, because hes a poor rebounder, especially for his athletic gifts. Can you imagine if oscar had those measurables?

Pope tried several defensive adjustments, Alabama made big shots. Today we just got beat by better team.
No. That’s not gonna cut it. We are giving up 88 points in conference play. The defense has to improve and there’s no way around it. Or we don’t go far in march

We don’t give ourselves margin on offense for mistakes because our defense is so average.

We are capable of better offense, and that could have won us this game, but it’s the defense and rebounding that set the floor for a team and our floor is too low for my liking.

We are at the mercy of our offensive efficiency, which will ebb and flow. The problem is that it will ebb when we want it to flow in March.

We could have won the game if we had shot more 3pt baskets instead of 2pt baskets, but they were defending it too well. We should have taken what they were giving us and attacked the paint more, and maybe gotten some more free throw attempts.

We made some mistakes on offense this game for sure but nothing egregious. We gave up 1.31 PPP and that’s what sunk us. They got what they wanted at the 3pt line and at the rim. Their aggressiveness seeking the rim and our inability to defend without fouling got them 14 more FT attempts. They got better shots from three, shooting 7 more and making 2 more than we did. The FG and 3PT percentages were comparable, as were the turnovers. They had slightly better OR% as well.

What an absolute joke our defense is, we can't ****ing guard ANYONE. How is the defense still THIS bad over half way into the season?
Bottom line our fans need to quit whining and crying everytime we lose to a top 10 team .we took there best shot and we came up a little short. a shot or a play here and there, we win the game. we have a hell of a team quit crying and move on . Other teams have good players too GO CATS I like this team they fight

Uk had chances to hit big shots at the end of the game, they just missed. Almonor missed a big one that would have pyt uk ahead. Butler threw the ball away at the end that could have put uk up. Bama just hit some big threes at crunch time

Thought there were several missed calls when uk got the ball inside. Thought oweah and William got fouled several times that wasn't called. UK also missed numerous open 3 point shots.

We dropped 11 spots in KenPom after today’s game. Down to #86 defensively. That’s the worst defensive rating of every team in the top 50 except UConn.

It has to improve or this team goes nowhere.

Weird, so many keep saying defense wasn't the problem. Kenpom is just wrong I guess.
