Boom Williams...10 Carries???

After the 75 yd run they went to press coverage. I get it, throw it then. But as soon as they got out of press, UK should have caved in their chest with running the ball. Drove me nuts.
Me too. I have no problem with a running the football until the casual football fan is bored to tears, as long as the chains are moving and points are hitting the scoreboard. I am really tired of a lot of posters on here downplaying the need to maintain some TOP. It really is important for the kids on the other side of the ball that they have been afforded some periods of rest once the latter stages of the game are reached. That being said, I also love the passing game. Let's be smart is all I am saying.

Your point is well made. But, having him catch one of Towles too late passes, across the middle or on a screen, might be the quickess way to lose him for the season.
It's also how we took the lead against Florida in OT.

Btw we only ran 60 plays so he carried the ball on 17% of our snaps.. If we run 80 plays that's we will say 13 carries for boom and honestly about right.. The real problem was our lack of offensive plays
I did not get to see the game live and have not yet watched a replay. I have looked for a thread on the above point and not found anything. Exactly why was that (i.e., only 60 snaps)? Certainly not what was expected.

Peace

They ran the ball and had a TOP of around 37 mins leaving us with TOP of only 23 mins.. They were playing press coverage and we were throwing the football.. At first it was working.. But because it was working we were scoring quickly and going down the field at 30 yards a clip (so not many plays).. Then when it started to fail our offense stalled and we didn't sustain drives.. It led to them running ~25 more plays than we did.. Which was really the reason the game was close.. Our D wore down and they gashed us 3 straight drives for 23 points (9 min stretch)

ULL stacked the box begging UK to shoot deep and UK obliged. This strategy lead to quick long scores when it worked, but when it did not, it resulted in quick series. Dawson admitted that he should have gone for the 3rd and short down plays rather than trying to hit deep, but he gave into his agressive nature.

Our offense was either feast or famine.

  1. 1 play 75 yards TD
  2. 3 and out
  3. 7 plays 99 yards TD
  4. 5 plays 95 yards TD
  5. 3 and out
  6. 8 plays 47 yards FG
  7. 3 plays to end the 1st half
  8. 4 plays 14 yards
  9. 7 plays 14 yards FG
  10. 5 plays 66 yards TD
  11. 4 plays -1yd Missed FG
  12. 1 play INT
  13. 3 and out
  14. 9 plays 58 yards TD.
10 of our 14 possessions were 5 plays or less, those included 3 TDs. Just not very many sustained drives.

Thanks Gossie. I guess I could have looked up the drive chart myself. That is 8 of 14 "drives" for 14 yards or less. That's brutal. Was UK trying to go faster pace or was it a "normal" huddle to snap pace?

I got back to my room just in time to see ULL tie it up. HUGE play on that game winning drive when Towles fumbled the snap but still got enough to barely convert on 4th down.

Peace

We needed to settle down and force the running/short passing game on them, but Dawson chose to try to demoralize them with the long ball because they were leaving it open. It is going to be interesting to see how he calls the game Saturday.

Might want to rethink the strategy a bit guys. Best player on the field...by a lot. Needs 15-20 carries every single game.
If Boom is getting 20 carries a game my fear is he will be out a lot with injuries...more than happy with 3 rbs splitting up 45 carries a game

I should have also put down the time for each drive. The drives generally did not eat up much clock. Some of it was pace. I don't think there was too much huddling up that I can remember. The biggest problem was Towles' accuracy, or lack thereof. Even on receptions it was mainly our WRs making an adjust to a poorly thrown ball.

The most frustrating part was failing to gain any yards after Harmon's kickoff return to the 20 yard line. If we score a TD there the game is over. I doubt ULL had enough left to even get to 33. But shoulda, woulda, coulda.
