According to a poster on the main board this isn't the case at all. Apparently he was ready to retire after last season and an assistant was to take over....said assistant had a family member with cancer or had cancer or something and he tended to that so Ryan agreed to coach one more semester

ESPN also wrote this was the scenario. He allowed his Asst Coach to tend to his dad (who sadly passed away). He and the AD had several discussions and he decided end of the semester would be a good time to turn the team over to the Asst so he's have a fair shot to show what he could do. I don't think he made it public, but I don't think he bailed either.

He got to carry out the biggest hit in NCAA history and giftwrap a title for Duke, nothing left for him to accomplish. That Final Four game against us might as well have been his national championship.

Glad he "got one stole from him" in the end and that he's retiring in the midst of a crap season, couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

I think the loss to Duke, where a national championship was taken from him and his kids, took a lot out of him. Probably figured that was his chance.

Not gonna miss him. Mean old fart. Far as I'm concerned we took one away from him and he took one away from us. Would love to trade but that's not possible.

Yeah, he is a POS. And I doubt they would have beat UCONN if UK could not have.

And taken from him how in the Duke game? I recall watching that Okafor had 4 fouls with like 12-13 mins to go and that Wisconsin got most of the calls the first 30 mins of the game. Now Duke got them all the last 10 mins and the problem is that is the only part most of our fans watched. I hate Duke as much as the next guy, but they were better than Wisconsin. UK would have beat Duke though IMO.

I saw it differently. Okafor couldn't guard anyone all season long, so Kaminsky was taking it right to him. Wisconsin only had two fouls at halftime, but that was their M.O. They didn't foul people. So at halftime Coach K says to the reporter "We've got to get these fouls evened up." And lo and behold, Duke player drives directly into the Wisconsin player holding his hand straight in the air, and it's a foul on Wisconsin.

That was about as one-sided a second half as I've ever seen. Wisconsin had a nine-point lead and it was taken from them. My greatest fear, that we would beat Wisconsin and get jobbed in the final against Duke, came true...only it came true against the team that beat us.
