Bo, Herschel or Earl

Stats aren’t everything, but…

Herschel: 5502 scrimmage yards and 52 touchdowns
Bo: 4575 scrimmage yards and 45 touchdowns
Earl: 4571 scrimmage yards and 41 touchdowns

……….and Herschel did that in three years where the other two did that in four………. If Herschel played all four years and remained healthy, it wouldn’t have been out of the question for him to have over 7000 scrimmage yards and 70 touchdowns as a running back. That ‘83 team was damn good even without him.
Way more carries than Bo.

Bo, Herschell and Earl in that order, Bo could do it all, cut, change direction or run over you. Herschell was more of a straight-ahead runner and would run over you and was so strong. There was no catching either one of them from behind either. Earl was like a Mack truck, you didn't want to see him coming thru the line or you were possibly going to get hurt if you were a DB or Safety. You couldn't go wrong with any of the three.

He just couldn't stay on the field. I think Todd Gurley was better runner than either, he wasn't very durable either. Got to be able to available to play to be considered the best.

Bo always had help, and there was a 2nd option defenders had to respect. Everyone in the stadium knew HW was getting the ball, and most likely a sprint draw to the right. And then there is that old durability thing, got to be able to play.

Durability is the 1 issue ill give to HW.

Hershel Walker was the best college running back I've ever watched. Earl Campbell was a human cement truck. Oddly for various reasons none of them were highly successful in the NFL.
I disagree.

HW spent three season in USFL first & had over 5K yards there. Combined with his NFL yards, his totals would rank 7th in NFL history. That's not highly successful?

EC is 36th in career NFL yards. That's at least successful. To me, that's also highly successful.

And Bo tore up his hip in his 4th NFL season & was done. His 5.4 career YPA rank 5th overall though not listed in records b/c 3+ seasons doesn't qualify him. Anyway, I call that highly successful also.

Because there are only a few who can make it happen. Chances are he just did it, he never thought about it or practiced it either. Like Nike says. JUST DO IT...... when I think of athletes affiliation to Nike its Bo Jackson and Michael Jordan........... Maybe Ken Griffy JR.
You don't agree?

No doubt to me that HW was the best college running back I ever watched. He was ready for the NFL immediately. Best athlete as a young man goes to Bo… and I will not forget Neon Dion.

Honorable mention to “The Big Mound of Rebound” because of his obvious golfing skills. I would love to hang out with that guy for a weekend!

Think about this. In one season in college Barry Sanders rushed 373 times for 2,850 yards (7.6+ per carry). He had four 300 yard games in one season

One time NFL MVP. Two time NFL offensive player of year. Four time NFL rushing leader.

For those too young to remember him, watch some video. You will be amazed.

He’s the GOAT. I don’t even consider anyone else.

Barry Sanders also ran for over 100 yards in 14 straight NFL games. He ran for over 1000 yards in ten straight NFL seasons. Think about that durability.

Dorsett was a more productive pro than either, and had similar production in college. Sanders is in the conversation. I'd cast Bo and Herschel as the best downhill guys, Sanders and Dorsett as the best rushing "artists"... scatbacks... APB... take your pick.

Can't believe this thread got to p2 without a Dorsett mention.

Payton was Top 3 all time pro. Hard to gauge his college days, playing in HBC ranks as their competitive decline was starting. Clearly, a more significant professional than Bo or Herschel.

His quote…”It was kinda girlish to have one guy tackle me, I wanted four or five…” love it.
Earl was Benny Snell on steroids! He was definitely the most fun to watch for me even though I'd have to vote HW number one.

Earl Campbell best of those 3, but Sanders last year at Ok St was best season ever by any running back

You could almost feel the reluctance NFL players had stepping into the hole when Big Earl was coming through. He just plowed people
