Blue - White Scrimmage +/-

Calculated these up to the 6:30 mark in the 2nd half....that's when Canada, Payne, Watkins started playing so the last + 6 minutes is omitted.

Washington +39
Tshiebwe +31
Wheeler +15
Collins +7
Grady +1
Hopkins -1
Allen -15
Brooks -15
Ware -31
Mintz -31

These don't necessarily mean much but notice the 4 worst +/- players were the four guys returning from the historically bad 9-16 UK team last year.

Again, just one scrimmage but a few other tidbits (excluding walk-on play):

When Washington and Wheeler player together they were +27 over 18 miuntes

When they were separated Washington +12, Wheeler -12

In another thread there was a discussion of the starting lineup after Cal said Wheeler/Washington/Tshiebwe may start. Two popular lineup suggestions:

Wheeler
Washington
Hopkins
Collins
Tshiebwe

.....were +15 in 10 minutes.

Wheeler
Washington
Grady
Brooks
Tshiebwe

....were +12 in 8 minutes.

Pretty equal, I think Calipari goes with Brooks/Grady over Hopkins/Collins for the opener against dUKe.

Regards

Yeah, it actually stood out to me during the game that the returning players appeared to be outclassed by the new players, and last season suddenly made a ton of sense. Our guys just weren’t very good. Mintz wasn’t just one of our players last year, he was the leader in multiple statistical categories, including points, assists, and 3PFGs, and even he looked to be behind the new guys.

Exactly why Mintz needs to learn his new role as a valuable supporting player and not as the main guy. He tried to do way too much in the first half.

Just needs to let the game come to him. He’s going to be an important piece, but he’s not Russell Westbrook.

I was very pleasantly surprised by all three of the freshman. TyTy is a lock to start, but I could also see Collins or Hopkins working their way in as a stretch 4. Based on the BW game, I would expect the starting five to be:

Wheeler
Washington
Grady
Brooks
Tshiebwe

Only one starter from last year’s roster (Brooks), and I could see even him getting replaced before March.

Yeah. I watched it again last night. I thought Mintz looked like the worst player on the floor. These numbers reflect that. However, I thought Ware looked real solid.

Start the only five + guys on the list.

G Wheeler
G Washington
G Grady
F Collins
F Tshiebwe

I believe that Ware and Mintz played together the entire game, so keep that in mind.

Agreed. I understand why he did the swaps. You’re right, though, makes the analytics difficult to take into account.
I don’t know. I probably haven’t thought it through, but it seems to me that moving guys around is the best way to test for individual +/-. If a player is a consistent difference-maker, then the composition of his team shouldn’t matter. The more random things are, the more a +/- score represents the player and not his team.

I would need to think it through some more. Lol

This is the way I see it also. Switching lineups is what gives +/- it's significance.

The problem with what I posted is that it is ONE data point. If they scrimmaged again today all the numbers could flip (I doubt it though).

That’s my feeling as well. I’m surprised that Brooks was so bad + - but I did miss a lot of the first half. Second half he was on fire.

Yeah Mintz didn’t play very well but again I’ve seen him in games and he brings it. He won’t force it as much in games I don’t think. Plus his shot was broke and that won’t happen often either.

I don’t think Mintz played any at his natural SG spot. Maybe a few minutes with Washington running the show. I think that impacted him.

Will he play better off the ball, where he can just run off screens and hunt shots?

He didn’t get to do much of that in the scrimmage.

🤣

Interesting stats and thank you for calculating them, but it was a meaningless scrimmage against teammates. You can just as easily point out that the veterans have far less to prove than the newcomers.

I just take heart in seeing that our talent level on this squad looks far upgraded over last year.

Very encouraging.

Just think about it, our leading returning scorer looked to be the 9th or 10th best player on the floor.

And we didn’t even get to see Toppin or Fredrick.

Yeah that will be his strength and I can’t wait to see him play where he’s not the only offense I’ve threat on the perimeter beside Allen when he got hot. Not having to force offense will help him a ton.

Glorified practice, which Blue White game is, means diddly squat. There's a reason for a running clock and stopping the game early. Yes, players show their abilities and the fans enjoy, as I did. I was impressed with all the freshmen as well as the transfers. Thus will be a extremely deep team when all are healthy.

Maybe. But practice is where guys earn their starting spots. And a “glorified practice” in front of fans with no breathers is an even better place to earn minutes. I suspect they were trying.

Ware is only good from 2 feet. Nothing has changed from last season...yet. Huge offensive liability.

I noticed Mintz was trying to do too much in the first half also. That really is very telling. He was pretty much the best player last season but doesn't even appear to be a starter on this team.

Let’s be honest Cal knew Mintz had limitations last year that’s why he gave Askew so much rope. Mintz was the best player on a really horrible team, I think Mintz can def be a valuable player on this team but he is not gonna be playing PG. The three freshman all appear to be even better than they were projected which is a very good sign.
