Bilas: NBA is a better product than college basketball

Depends on what you are looking for. College hoops has a crazy factor the NBA doesn’t have. You simply can’t know what will happen due to a lower skill level, and that means some big upsets from time to time. If you’re looking to watch the best players in the world, watch the NBA. While I don’t watch much of it at all in the regular season, those guys are so good they can make the game look slow. And NBA playoffs are pretty dang fun to watch.

He seems to be saying the quality of the basketball played in the NBA is better which, I mean, duh. But sports are entertainment and I find college basketball more entertaining than the NBA (and CFB > NFL).

One area where CBB falls short is all the cupcake, auto-win games. Yes there are occasional dramatic upsets but on the whole 30% of every good team’s season is uninteresting. The closest parallel for the NBA is tanking (and load management, sometimes for tanking purposes).

I like Pope’s suggestion to increase the number of games in a season only if we can guarantee it means more conference games and non-con tournaments and not another slate of cupcakes.

Neither is anything to write home about right now. But I agree with Bilas. The NBA is on a whole different level than college in terms of individual skill and athleticism. The same is true of the NFL compared to college football.

The people who prefer college sports do so because of tradition, loyalty and pageantry, not the quality of the game itself. They have a personal investment in their college teams, that they don't have for the NBA. This will erode away over time because college sports are now played by professional athletes, paid mercenaries.

The NIL changes a lot of things and will keep a lot more talent in college basketball which will make college basketball a better product. Me personally I never watch the NBA and I never watch any other college game but UK so his opinion doesn't matter to me one way or another.

I am not the least interested in NBA nor have I been in a long time. I’ll catch a live game for the atmosphere once every few years (go PHX) but that’s about it.

This this and all of this! The NBA has the best players in the world playing basketball. Of course the product is better. But their regular season has gone mundane. No better example of this than the in season tourney trying to engage fans during the regular season.

The theatre of CBB is what makes it awesome. The upsets and shorter season place more of an emphasis on each game. Also there’s a huge local/regional connection the local or state colleges as well. But their regular level of play isn’t very good and has gotten worse over the last 20-25 yrs. Just think about it, if the player is very good they are gone after one or two yrs. The best players are in college for a much shorter time. This factor alone makes the level of play worse.

It’s hard for me to imagine someone being an actual basketball fan and not enjoying the NBA playoffs. Like an actual fan of the game of basketball and not just a UK (or insert your favorite local/state college team) fan. It’s got it all. The worlds greatest players absolutely playing their guts out to win a title in great atmospheres.

From a basketball perspective, it is. The players are better. It’s that simple. But as others have said, pretty much every other part of college ball is better than the NBA

I mean the quality of basketball is higher because the players are better and the officials are much better in the NBA. But that doesn't mean I or most of us have the same passion towards it.

People don't understand how good the nba is bc they make it look that easy, bc theyre that good.

Tho, the lack of physicality and metrics of only shooting 3s or layups can be boring
