But as a head coach you try and do something different with them and find something that works better than what you have been trying. It’s not rocket science here. Any middle school level coach could have gone and relieved cal of his duties tonight and did a better job of coaching defense than what cal did. I mean seriously, it’s not that effing hard!!!!

Z had 7 points, I think, 3 rebounds a great block and an assist in his limited time.
Ugo had what, 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks. Bradshaw 3 points, and a couple rebounds. Seems like z had the same production as the other 2 combined and did not play near the minutes

It's more about coaching. Watch how other team play the high pick. They hedge out to make the guy pick up his dribble or back peddle. UK does neither. Looks like red carpet is rolled out for an easy shot or lay up.

We’ve STRUGGLED with the high screen all season! Literally the entire season we cannot guard a high screen. It STILL hasn’t been corrected. It’s nonsense.
We had a defender facing the Gonzaga bench as IKE scored facing the other way. That's what you see in fifth grade by a spaz kid that never gets in.

He is NOT a 5 and he is being played as a 5. It is not going to work. He is a thee or four. He is a shooter/scorer/ floor runner. He will be awful always at a 5.
Doesn't even try to set screens on offense. He goes to set a screen and then takes off running before his teammate is anywhere near him. I don't know if he's afraid of contact or thinks his height will be to make up for the distance.

But Bradshaw gets all kinda run, I watched him get scored on at will, one time he was even backwards in the post.
That's strange. I don't remember Z being in the game the second half, and yet Gonzaga continued to go at the 5 spot. The only thing that was stopping Ike in the post was foul trouble.
It's amazing how things really do play out to teams strengths and weaknesses.
We knew coming into this game the Zags did not shoot the 3 very often and was average. We also knew they made nearly 58% of their twos.
Credit to them they went to their strength down the stretch and we couldn't stop it. Our defense was absolutely terrible but it was a combination of both. In all likelihood they were always going to shoot a high %.
You cannot let them shoot 56% from 2 AND allow them to rebound 49% of their misses. EIGHTEEN offense rebounds. That's wild. I wonder how this team would have been if we had a solid rebounder.......if Oscar was still here.
On the bright side again the offense scored 1.20 points per poss vs them. The most they have given up all season.

Even more amazing is we knew all of this coming in and played a defense that allowed them to utilize their strengths and not force them into their weaknesses. Such a genius this cal guy is!!!!
He has become brain dead under stress. A common trait when you get old. However it appears the assistants coaches are just yes me and fail to help inform Cal who should be playing based on physical condition alone.
I'm not certain there's any coach alive that could get this team to play good defense. It's that bad. We have no one that can stay in front of their man and we have three 7 footers each of them can't do anything to protect the rim. This defense was completely lost as soon as soon as the roster was constructed.
Shockingly bad.
When a team is 4 for 14 from 3. a good coach would adjust to a zone. Big Z is the most talented player on this team. He needs to start and play. Cal is a dope.
BS!!!! Any coach, and I mean any coach, alive would try as much as they could to change up the dynamics of this defense. Could they or would they ever be considered “good”. Who knows, but they would at least be better and for this team that would be good enough. Unfortunately our coach is brain dead so we won’t ever find out.
We got murdered on the boards. This is the main reason Cal doesn’t like zone. It’s even harder to rebound out of a zone. You don’t have a man to block out. The same result could have been achieved by doubling the post which he have done all season. For some reason tonight we didn’t and we paid for it. I would have doubled the post and lived with them shooting 3s.

There are so many ways to attack high ball screens if that is what the offense chooses to do
1. Drop coverage… is what we chose
2. You can switch it…. But your big has to have the feet and guard will be in mismatched
3. You can hedge it…. And force ball handler more east/ west vs getting downhill
4. You can trap it and attack the guard…. then you back three defenders have to play four men wisely
5. You can cheat in lane with extra defenders….andvyou usually leave a man unguarded intentionally
6. You can zone….. but we know Cal imagines that to be a Bennie concept
Why a coach can’t teach multiple approaches to even a man to man concept is silly

Run pick and pop every possession While big Z is in. It forces the opponent post to leave the lane. Play some zone to hide Z on the other end! He is only in a few minutes at a time anyway.
That is why you need a zone or just let him guard the rim. It isn’t going to be any worse than the crap he calls defense currently
