Best Day as UK Fan

The 96 Championship for me, I was stationed in Italy and we watched the game at like 4am. I remember the 78 Championship but wasn’t as fired up as cheering my team to victory in 96.
Where in Italy? I was stationed in La Madelena in the mid-eighties

Count me in for '98 vs. Duke.

I will never forget the string of amazing euphoric gatherings on Euclid after each one of those wins in '98.

After the Duke game, in particular, I ended up taking a particularly frisky coed back to my apartment.

Damn it was a good day.

What was your best day as a UK fan? Please ignore the urge to say "When Cal leaves" that's not the intent of this thread. I really just want to know what things crystalized your fandom.

For me I have a few that were positive and impactful on my fandom:
-The 1996 win over Syracuse, I was little and that 96 team are my first real memories of UK Basketball
-The 1998 comeback win over Duke (I went to church and we were down a lot and then came home and saw that we won!)
-The 2012 tournament win over Louisville

There are so many, but I tried to limit to just a few.
Those three are up there for me as well.

96 was probably the best though because that was the first title I got to see. And you’ll never forget your first.

98 was a blast though because I KNEW we we’re going to pull away from Utah and win. And we did. I remember saying it at half when we were down ten. Then we came out and locked them up and dropped 47 on them in that second half.

I kept saying “we’re gonna do it….we’re gonna do it!” My mom kept trying to shush me as she was nervous. I got misty eyed after that one I was so happy.

Watching our great teams in the 90s with family and friends made a lot of great memories for me.
All my family were UK fans. My great aunt, my grandmother, and my mom NEVER missed watching a game until they passed. Lots of fun memories of my very devout grandmother trying not to cuss out Nolan Richardson.

Miss them all a great deal.

96 beating UMass in the FF the streets in Lex were crazy, was at Kentucky football players house and it was nuts. 2 Keys Tavern, just a hell of a night.

2012 in ATL with my dad beating IU after the way they treated our fans in Bloomington. We, BBN, gave it back to their fans albeit not to the trashy level they did. We even had an IU fan sell us his tickets for the Baylor game after we beat them. He even delivered them to our hotel room. He looked to be holding tears back when he saw it was Kentucky fans buying them.😂

Throw in the LSU comeback. Me and buddies were in a bar in Richmond, EKU, watching. We played drinking games in disbelief as we came back. There was shots every time we cut into the lead. Luckily I saw, remember the completion of the comeback but the rest of the night is hazy.😄

1978 NCAA Final Four / Championship... I was there with a bunch of friends, as a college student and 20 years old.

I didn't know it at the time, but it was never getting any better than that.

Fortunately, the current Mrs. Rockford will never read this.

My sons might, but they would agree.

Had to be awesome to be there! :)
Two games I’ve witnessed in person taught me to never leave a game early. I went to the Reds vs Astros in 1969 in Crosley Field. The Astros (with Joe Morgan) were up 9-0 in the sixth inning. The Reds won 10-9 in extra innings. The other game was the UK vs KU game.

The 1975 win over IU in the Elite 8 was sweet.

Another great day occurred in the 1983-84 pre-season. Back then, the team would play Blue-White games across the state. The Cats‘ first exhibition that fall was at Boyd County and marked the comeback of Sam Bowie after missing several seasons to injury. When Bowie‘s name was called in the player introductions, the standing ovation went on and on. It was a great night!

1996 win over Syracuse.

I was there at the Meadowlands with my dad. We were sitting in the upper deck. Tony Delk’s 4-point play happened in front of us. I was 15.

My dad’s best friend from college was a successful corporate attorney and entrepreneur. He was very wealthy. We were not. We used to tailgate with his family during UK football seasons.

He surprised my dad with FF tix and a paid for room. We just had to get there. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I will be forever grateful to dad’s friend for the opportunity. Unfortunately, dad’s buddy passed away six years ago and I never got the chance to tell him how much being able to go to the 1996 Final Four meant to me. One of my biggest regrets.

Best day was the 1998 win over Duke. I was around in '78 and '96 too. Those were sweet, but the pressure was exhausting. The 1998 title was unexpected, so I think I enjoyed it more. The Duke game was more exicting by far than the FF games.

Now if you said "best moment" I might have to go with the shot Sparks hit against Michigan State in Austin. I was there. Turned out bad a few minutes later, but it was euphoria for a couple of minutes.

'96 title game. I was 15 in a run of the peak of my fandom. Had tickets to Reds Opening Day with Dad sitting front room drinks on dugout. Unfortunately, that was game the umpire passed away...so that was awful. Regarding title game, cried like a baby when we won- pure joy.

It has not happened yet, it will be the day Cal walks out the door.

Probably 1975 win over Indiana in the Elite Eight.

I was a college sophomore in Ft. Lauderdale on spring break with some of my basketball teammates. Watched the game, and we were all delirious with excitement when the Cats won, especially since Indiana was by far the most hated UK rival in those days.

Went out to one of those huge early disco-type clubs in Ft. Lauderdale and, still full of adrenaline, introduced myself to a tall blonde woman who I found out was a cheerleader for the Florida Gators basketball team. Yadda Yadda, fast forward, we got married and had a daughter.

Some other contenders, but that day/night has to be in the conversation, all things considered.
Mine as well

2012 National Championship win. First one I had seen Kentucky win in my lifetime (could technically say two but was too young to remember 98). I became a fan in the late Tubby years, had seen the disaster known as the Billy Gillispie era and the heartbreaking tournament losses to WVU and UCONN in Cal’s first two seasons so seeing them reach that mountaintop for the first time was amazing.

1978 NCAA title game vs Duke. Given's 41 and Lee's final dunk are still the highlights of my fandom.

The day I met Bill Keightley (Mr. Wildcat). It was at a pep rally in downtown Houston at the Hilton during the Gillispie years. UK was playing at the University of Houston that night and I was at the Hilton waiting for the team to come out. The first person out to visit the fans was Mr. Wildcat and I got to shake his hand and talk to him for just a moment. He was very cordial and seemed to be genuinely happy to be out there with the fans.
Bill was a wonderful man was a friend to all

I was a diehard fan long before this, but this one still stands out to me.

DEC. 9, 1978 – KENTUCKY 67, KANSAS 66 (OT)

Trailing 66-60 with :30 seconds left in overtime, Kentucky staged a frantic comeback. After a Dwight Anderson putback and pair of free throws, the Wildcats stole the ball and Kyle Macy made a 15-foot jumper with :04 left to tie the game at 66-66. Then, Kansas star Darnell Valentine, who scored a game-high 27 points, called a timeout that the Jayhawks didn't have, resulting in a technical foul. Macy sank the game-winning free throw to complete the thrilling, come-from-behind victory.
I was at Rupp that night. That's why you NEVER quit. It would be hard to write that script and be believed but over 23,000 watched happen that night. Memories like this is why we love the PROGRAM / TRADITION.

There have been so many great moments for me as a fan but the one that sticks out to this day was Cawood Ledfords final game at Rupp.During the pregame call in show, there were lots of callers thanking Cawood and then a call came in from a man who simply thanked Cawood for being his eyes to watch the Cats for many seasons. The man was blind and he thanked Cawood for describing every detail during a game that it was as if he could see it.It was a beautiful conversation and if Cawood hadn't known by then how much he was loved by BBN then that moment cemented it.

A lot of good memories already posted. I’d say beating unc to end the FF drought in 2011. I had transferred into UK that year, and that was a fun game. I remember rushing the Willy T library with a random pack of people and then bar hopping for a while after it.
