Do we think once Barnes retires Tennessee goes back to what they were prior? No Elite 8’s and not beating or being competitive with us consistently? Or does NIL play into them staying at the top of the conference standings with a new coach?

No one in the SEC is going away totally. There is a lot more financial committment to basketball throughout the conference. Its gonna be like SEC Baseball or Softball....loads of top 25 teams and tourney berths.

Now, having 14 teams being in the NCAAs probably isnt going to happen every year. But our days of rolling through the SEC most years are long gone.

Give the field a few years of football performing way under standard and see how much schools are willing to continue over-investing in basketball. The SEC was pitiful last year, and the first time in probably two decades where we weren't even close to being the best league in the country in football. That dog don't hunt in the South.

In the short term, I agree. In the long run, it's hard to see schools continuing to invest to the level they are in basketball. JMO.

Sec football wasn't pitiful. It was still by far the best conference. The difference was the top few in the big 10 spent unprecedented amounts of money. Spending way beyond what anyone ever envisioned at the beginning of nil.

Although the big 10 was the best at the very top, down conference they were very weak. By contrast, down conference for the sec was still very strong.

Imo we're going to see even more nil going to sec basketball. In basketball one player can change the course of everything. So that level of impact is way more rewarding to a donor as compared to spreading that money across 15 guys none of which individually move the needle nearly as much. Throw in the fact the big 10 is going to way outspend everyone again, which I think will have some people view football generally as the poorer investment.

I understand the basketball player angle, but at the end of the day, football is still the more profitable sport. I might be wrong or the truth might lie somewhere in between. All I know is Bama fans expect much more. So do fans of Florida, Auburn, aTm, LSU, and more.

Football definitely is the most profitable by far, but thats limited to only the athletic department.

From a donor perspective, you really get nothing out of nil other than personal satisfaction. Imo there will be greater personal satisfaction knowing your money paid for the key basketball player that changes everything and takes your team on a deep run. By contrast, youre paying that same money for 5- 10 important football players none of which individually are making that level of impact.

Qb is the only exception, but you m not considering that position because the big 10 is going to buy every single top tier season changing qb; and this post was limited to sec.

Well we've split with them inthe regular season every year the last 6 years except us sweeping them this year and 2022 with him and with us having cal in his worst form where we only had 1 tournament win so we were extremely down. Even our 9 and 16 year beat them.
