But I believe it's time for him to hang it up to be honest. He just doesn't look the same out there. He has missed on so many long passes that I rarely see him miss on ... he does not look like Peyton Manning. Congrats to the Colts, Andrew Luck will be a hell of a QB for a long time coming.

It was painfully obvious during the Cincinnati game something wasn't right with Manning. Age is finally winning over. Wagered the Colts ML today.

Tell your friends to be wary drafting him in fantasy next year.

I'm always torn when the Colts and Broncos play. I'm a Manning fan and I like watching the UK guys on the Broncos but I'm actually a Colts fan. Hopefully the Colts will beat the Pats, who I despise.

Yeah, I think he's done. Maybe there is a specific, not really serious injury that they haven divulged. Otherwise, it just looks to be time.

Only 5 time MVP. Best two quarterback I ever saw - Marino and Manning.....

Pretty simple explanation. He never had a great defense esp with the Colts. His Super Bowl win with the Colts didn't have a great D, they just put it together for 3 games. Last year he had a solid defense and made it to the Super Bowl. One could argue the Colts couldn't put together a great D thanks to being hamstrung to the Colts offense but a QB cannot do it all. Big Manning fan and he looked very old tonight. Can't see him coming back

Agree with your overall point, but regarding that 2006 Colts D, it was worse than that: worst run defense since the NFL/AFL merger.....

It frustrates and amuses me to hear people saddle a quarterback with responsibility for overall team success. Manning gas nothing to do with run defense, nothing to do with run-blocking. Marino had nothing to do with defense or special teams. Just makes no sense, in football, to do that. Basketball? Probably - only 5 guys on the court, and each plays offense and defense. I have always thought if Manning had played for Belichick, they'd have 6 or 7 Super Bowl wins...

Looked like he has lost some arm strength ... At least tonight. Looked like the ball was floating

Agree.

Manning will only come back if he is allowed to direct the offense like he's always been given authority to do so throughout his career. It was obvious that the Denver coaching staff pulled in a lot of his ability to do that the 2nd half of the season.

I think the coaches saw the limitations and tried to make the changes and take more control, but Manning can't and won't play that way. Although I have my doubts that he's ready to admit that it's over.

Manning fan here too, just as much of a fan of his off the field as on it too. His career speaks for itself, I think the neck injury had a big effect on his arm strength which never was the strongest. Time to get out while he is still in good health.

The other part, Peyton's name was never in the paper for drug use, domestic violence, assault, not of that kind of thing, he is someone you can have your kids look up to as a role model.

Actually the simple explanation is that Manning out prepares everyone in the regular season but in the post season everyone prepares that hard. He's a very good QB but has always been overrated.

Looks like his arm strength has taken a pretty big hit (there's no doubt he's lost considerable zip).

As for today, I thought IND's secondary just dominated the Denver receivers. Denver also had 4-5 drops. On the flip side, Luck was throwing 25 yard darts into tight coverage off his back foot. He's the future of the AFC.

How lucky was IND to lose Manning for one season due to injury? That injury allowed them to get Andrew Luck. Unbelievable. To go from one Hall of Fame QB to a guy that will put up Hall of Fame numbers is ridiculously fortunate.

GBB!!!

Count me out as a manning fan. I'm from tennessee, and I'm a UK football fan. I was a big couch guy back in the day. Had tons of couch > Manning conversations with all my UT buddies. I said he was a choke artist them and still say it now. He's lucky to have be one ring he has. That was a truly Tremendous team.

And the colts have to be one of the most disgraceful organizations in pro sports and I still link him to them. They've got no loyalty and a terrible history dating back to the Mayflower incident. I also hate anything in indiana.

Not sure how a UK fan from the 90's can root for manning. Sorry.

Manning is definitely a top 5 all time QB. You won't ever see me put him #1 with his playoff embarrassments over the years. I also think his stats are inflated due to the era he plays in. He has always had a damn good offense around him as well.

As for why his defenses are never great, some have a theory that on Manning teams D continues to not be as emphasized because they put everything into giving Manning a great offense around him every year.

I agree OP, he's toast. But I don't believe he'll hang it up. Even if Denver doesn't want him, he'll end up somewhere...and honestly, as bad as he is, he's probably still better than a few starters in the league.

He took a beating this year behind that line as well. I think he will take some time off and think it over this year, I knew if they won the Super Bowl he was done, but after watching last night he may be done no matter what.

On a side note the 4 best QB's in the league today are playing in the Conference Championship games this weekend. Funny how often strong QB play lands you on this weekend.

Manning reminds me of the last years of Johnny Unitas. The Heart was there but the arm was not.

Indy was a better team yesterday. Denver got beat on both sides of the line and the Indy back 7 shut down the Denver receivers. The only guys open were 40 yards down field and those are low percentage passes. Manning didn't have it last night but it was a team beating not just a QB failure. As stated Denver had several ridiculous drops. All in all Indy just came out and played harder with man defense while the Broncos rushed 4 most of the night and played zone defense which Luck picked apart under no pressure.

Teams have him pegged now and it is a demise of a career. His arm strength is gone and therefore - sit on short routes and make him use his arm.....and he can no longer complete the same passes in the same time frame. I hope he ends his career without hanging on - still feel he can do one more and help the team - but it would require more running and run to pass schematics than used this season

Would be a helluva coach - or based on his SNL skits - comedic actor!

I wouldn't be surprised if he plays a few more yrs. He's lost quite a bit but he's still an effective QB. Still top half of the league at least.

Manning three for over 4,700 yards and 39 TDs this season and they won 12 games. Even at his worse, he's better than the majority of the league. I think he made a mistake playing for Denver on San Francisco. I think he could do well for two more seasons if given some upgrades or heck, even switched to a better team.

His numbers are great but his line wasn't the same after injuries and I think that affected his play. Then, Denver went to a run first offense and took the offense away from him. He will take some time and evaluate himself physically. I think he can still make all of the throws necessary to be great. He just didn't have the time to do it. We'll all know the next couple of months what his status will be. Denver will be better around him next year and I think their defense will be better as well.

Tend to agree Manning doesn't have the arm strength anymore. Hate to see it, he's been such a pleasure to watch and a class act.

Happens to every player. Time catches up with you. QB's can usually play a lot longer because their bodies don't take the pounding. But when the arm starts to go it's over.

Luck was throwing bb's. Manning was not.

Luck will be a VERY good QB for years and years to come. Dude is so, so smart.

You and media said the same thing about Brady not long ago.....Everyone said Brady should hang it up. Fans are idiots. Manning is still incredible and will come back stronger. Mark my words. What short memories and impatience fans have.....

Montana
Brady
Marino
Elway
Johnny U/Steve Young/Dan Fouts

All guys I would put ahead of Manning

Rumor on some of the sports talking head shows is Manning is hurt, so that explains his play at the end of the year. If you are the Bronco's who are you going to get to replace him.

I used to like the Colts but can't stand Jim E. he is worse than a 2 bit pimp.

^^^^^^
This, he played for UT could never be a fan of his, thank you for bringing it up was wondering if I was the only UK who had the same mindset. Became a colt fan after they got rid of his a@@ Luck ten times the QB and it showed yesterday.

I think one of the main reasons his playoff record is not that great is the New England Patriots. In all those years with Indy, they had to play New England usually at their place in the playoffs. That was when NE and Brady were in their hay day and they always had a solid defense to go with the offense, but the Colts usually were mediocre at best on defense, plus the team was built to play on a rug and the sub zero temps in NE were tough to deal with. Can't put all that on Manning.

Manning is one of my most admired professional athletes but it is becoming apparent that the years are starting to take their toll. The long NFL season really wears on guys physically. Taking all those hits week in and week out is tough for the young guys but at age 38 you know he's spending more then his fair share of time in the ice tub. Anyways if he does retire maybe I'll see him more fishin out on Lake Chickamauga as his off-season home is about 5 miles from ours.

Let's see.

L to Titans, L to Dolphins, L to Jet, L to Patriots, L to Patriots, L to Steelers, L to Chargers, L to Chargers, L to Saints, L to Jets, L to Ravens, L to Seahawks, L to Colts.

He has been pretty good at spreading the losses around with multiple losses to the Jets, Chargers, in addition to the Patriots. To be fair, he did go to NE in 2004 in the AFC title game and lose, but lost their in the divisional round in 2005 and I doubt they go into Pitt and win if he had somehow won that game.

I (like a lot of Colts fans) was bitter when Manning was let go for a hot shot rookie QB that I was tired of hearing about in college. Tony Dungy retires and in comes Pagano out goes Manning. It was a big change not have Dungy or Manning around anymore they were the Colts. Now having the advantage of hindsight I couldn't be more happy with the decision that was made. Luck in year 3 is already the best QB in the NFL. The franchise is in great hands for many years to come

There's a lot of "he" in there, the pronoun you should be using is they. It's a team sport, and the QB has nothing to do with probably 60% of a particular game.

and did someone above say that Dan Fouts is a better QB than the only 5 time MVP? No response merited.

still say if he played for Belichick, and all he had to worry about was playing quarterback, he'd have at least 5 rings...

No response merited for that either, equally as outlandish.

^^ Maybe, maybe not. A lot of people think Belichick is the best coach ever. A lot of people think Manning is the best QB ever. It's not crazy to think a union of the two would be the most successful duo ever.

Manning has played for four head coaches in the NFL. Three of them were fired.....
