During that press conference, Barnhart said renovations to Memorial Coliseum will probably begin in 2023 and will include improvements to all seats, the construction of event space and the installation of air conditioning, which the building currently doesn’t have. On Thursday, Barnhart said discussions about renovating Memorial Coliseum have occurred “for a long time.” “It’s a complicated deal. You’ve got the roof, restrooms ... it’s a facility that just needs a lot of work,” Barnhart said. “It’s not been easy, and then you got into the COVID time space, and that set us back ... and then the supply chain changed. Having to get our arms around all of those pieces to be able to walk forward has been a really big challenge.”

Can't quite figure out why so many of our fans hate Mitch Barnhart. He got you (albeit with a forced hand) a guy to coach your basketball team that half of you think is beyond reproach and a football coach that has taken us places we have never been in my lifetime. All on our AD's watch. And he is awful?

Memorial Coliseum is were our volleyball team and girls basketball team plays.
We attend a lot of the girls volleyball games due to our youngest plays HS volleyball.
It does need a renovation thats for sure.
A ceiling tile fell last year before a game started was a couple rows back from us luckily no one was around.

It just looks junkie and ran down.

That article is free. There's a shot of the water stained ceiling tiles. It does look junkie.

The building doesn't currently have air conditioning? That's not true.

I’ve watched my share of televised women’s volleyball matches from Memorial, and nearly every broadcast the announcers comment on the lack of A/C.
That reminds me of watching a match Dick Gabriel was calling and he was fanning himself while doing it. Kind of surprising its taken UK that long to have that put in Memorial.

He also got us a National Championship volleyball coach.

Because he is not a mover/shaker. Is not an innovative leader. Not someone who is a strued negotiator. Way too conservative with his views and that influences his business dealings.

Guy hired Cal but can't handle him so he had to hire a buffer - Peevey. Was all in on BCG and didn't vet the guy - which was reactive because he couldn't land Donovan and either wasnt onboard or wasn't good enough to sell Cal the first time around. Refuses to sell alcohol to the commoners due to his "morals" but has no issue with the rich drinking, is not on the forefront of NIL because he thinks it will hurt fundraising, acted like the hall monitor when dealing with the Stoops/Calipari issue a month or so ago.

Yeah, he's all in on the rifle team and will hire successful coaches for sports that no one cares about. But that's not what it's all about for the fans. He was good for his time but his expiration date has passed years ago. Now we need an innovative leader. Time for new blood.

To me it’s really simple. He’s guided our 2 bread and butter programs into an oblivion and without others forcing his hand, we’d be in a really bad spot. In a perfect world we’d have a Football AD, a Basketball AD, and Barnhart could control the rest.

Early on Calipari didn’t want to work with Barnhart and so Peevy took over. When Calipari was first hired Barnhart didn’t even want it. He stopped it in 2006. He made the worst hire in the history of UK athletics, Gillispie. Joker might be the worst head coach we’ve ever had in football, at least in recent memory. He was extremely slow to give football upgrades and Brooks basically retired because of it. He had more in him but the facility situation ended his term. On top of all of that, you’ve got the Calipari contract, probably the worst contract (at this time) in the history of Kentucky basketball. Just look at the contract, it’s a rubber stamp for Calipari to do nothing.

His inability to push the envelope and compete at the highest level is another concern. In college athletics you have to push the envelope. We’re lucky we’re even competitive with him. Calipari would have never been here if it were up to Barnhart. Stoops wouldn’t be here if it were up to Barnhart. People seem to forget Mitch wasn’t looking at Stoops. Stoops had to pretty much beg him to give it a shot. Stoops approached Barnhart.

Much of the good he’s personally done has more to do with modern SEC revenue streams than his own work.

When you get more into the details, he’s a fairly below average - mediocre AD. definitely not capable of making UK as good as it can be.

I could honestly keep going. Just look at the way he handled Calipari’s comments. He butchered that situation about as bad as you can. Look at what he’s doing to our football program with the NIL. If something doesn’t change there fast, Louisville is about to beat us regularly in football. That will happen within 3 years at this rate. We might even lose stoops. Barnhart has personal crusades (alcohol / NIL) that he thinks is his business to use UK to prove a point. The problem is it’s going to crush us down the road.

I don’t personally think Barnhart will be at UK Much longer if he doesn’t get out of the way. We can’t compete under his vision. We’re just currently living off of what we built before the NIL came to be.

I honestly can’t figure out why anyone thinks he’s a good AD. Anything you throw that’s positive either really doesn’t have much meaning, or can be disputed by details and facts (ex. He is not responsible for Calipari coming here).

I’m definitely ready for a new guy.

I guess you want Tom Jurich.

You realize you listed nothing but personal preferences and not a single thing would represent grounds for dismissal. Further, if Barnhart were to slap his resume on the table, it would show leadership not only at KY but across all of college basketball. It would fill pages. You essentially have no case and sound like a disgruntled fan with no overview of what he actually does.

So all the SEC teams get the same amount ... why haven't all of them succeeded like Kentucky?

I know a majority of people (at least message board posters) don't care about Olympic sports, but the fact Kentucky was 9th in the Director's Cup last year is amazing. Mitch has brought success across the board, which is his job. His job isn't be good in basketball and football and screw everyone else.

The biggest mistake UKAA EVER made was moving Men's basketball out of Memorial Coliseum in 1977-78. When they did that, that moved out of the arguably best basketball venue EVER. For those that played in there they will tell you they never played in a venue with a better shooting background and site lines ever...that goes for UK players and opponents. If you were, and I would use the word, particularly in 2022, BLESSED to have attended a game there, you would tell anybody who will listen, there was never a bigger home court advantage. Cameron Indoor was built 10 years before Memorial Coliseum. Cameron Indoor seats 8,000. Memorial in its pre 1977-78 configuration sat 11,500. Duke has not suffered by playing in a smaller venue that was built in 1940! Going back to the discussion on whether to stay there or move to the off-campus complex which became Rupp Arena as part of the revitalization plan and the vibrant downtown Lexington we have today, there was an alternate option discussed of knocking out the Avenue of Champions (Euclid Avenue) end, and building out over Euclid Ave...kinda like Vanderbilt did in their end zones at Memorial Gymnasium. It would have have maybe 5,000 seats. THE EXCUSE for not doing that was they couldn't do that because the state transportation department had air rights over Euclid since it was a state maintained road. I did then and I do today call b------t. They could have done anything for Kentucky Basketball.

What they have done to destroy the grandeur of the wonderful place is a disgrace. I went in there a couple of years ago and I wish I had never gone in...It only looks the same on the outside. There is no reason that they could not upgrade the can lights to HD level in the ceiling instead of those gawdawful track lights. I realize there is no AC in the building, it was built in 1950, but it did not need those gawdawful whirling fans.

The architects renderings of what Mitch wants to do to the place destroys any semblance of Memorial. Why doesn't Mitch just tear down the entire building and build a brand new building on the site? He says there is nothing redeemable about it...

Well it's amazing that it did not stop Auburn or South Carolina for carolina from building new facilities. What I just read was an excuse.

Where can I find those architect renderings? Curious as to what the plans are.

Not. Go back to only having 10,000 in attendance when UK usually leads the nation in attendance each year while playing at Rupp.

Good luck with that. Why are you on edge? Relax get to it when you want to do it. Life is short enjoy the ride. Don’t allow others to control your emotions. Don’t make their problems yours. Chill Bill and have a sip. Step on a crack break your mama’s back. Release the pressure and for good measure find your wife’s treasure. Speak only when spoken too. Santa is watching you better no pout better not cry. Do you cry over spilt milk? Do you cry at weddings? Has anyone ever called you Shirley? Maybe, you have ED. Are you confused about your gender? Do you support CRT? What is your disfunction?

I think his Stopps hire was great but look at his other choices which would have him fired most other places along with Billy G. Most AD’a don’t survive that. He can thank whoever was responsible for forcing Cal into the position for his job IMO. Overall he’s done a great job but unfortunately only two sports really matter. If he would embrace NIL and do what’s needed to get UK at the top of the two sports that matter be would be universally loved I believe. UK has to do whatever it takes in FB just to stay at the level we are, let alone try to win the East from Georgia and try to compete with the West.

That is kinda the job of AD’s now because if Football especially and Basketball suffer then there is no athletic programs

The BCG fiasco, giving Cal a lifetime contract, selling alcohol to the rich but not common fans, his botched handling of Cal/Stoops situation, issues with NIL - not personal preferences. They are examples of who he is and how he operates.

Guy is a bean counter who is typically ultra conservative because the few times he pivots from his MO, he blows it. We needed this guy 20 years ago but his time has passed and we now need an innovative leader who can handle large egos, influence boosters/coaches, and navigate this ever changing landscape.

All fair points. I'm not even passively fighting for Mitch here, I don't really have a dog in the AD fight. I mainly look at it in terms of success of the two major programs (and as I understand it the non revenue sports like Volleyball and Rifle Team), his tenure has been pretty successful. Just the way I see it in the simplest terms but I do understand there is a lot more nuance here than just that.

Exactly! He made the programs stable, but we need a new guy to innovate, improve facilities to the max, and take us to heights we need to be at for Basketball and hopefully get to in Football.

I’m very happy being a Top 20 yearly team that wins 10 games and plays New Years Eve. It would be fantastic for every 3-4 years have a legit shot to win the East and maybe a SEC Championship. We have been knocking on the door for SEC East champs a couple times but we still have a large gap between us and a Georgia to get there. With the SEC adding teams like Texas and Oklahoma it’s only getting harder.
