Let me preface my comments by stating how much I hate the Gamecocks. I have lived down here for 9+ years (1 hour from Columbia) and I have never met such an entitled fan base that up until a few years ago had won absolutely nothing. Now they have back-to-back baseball titles and they certainly like to let you know that. Florida's talent in football and Vandy's trophy case.

Well I digress, on to the game. It was a freaking awesome atmosphere. I swear when Cal got teed up it was like the team and the UK fans at the game said oh yeah, now it's on. Honestly I knew when he got tossed that it was exactly what we needed. What they didn't really show on TV was how Cal was kicking like a mule...literally kicking his leg up and down trying to get to Sirmons. I was shaking with excitement/anger/adrenalin from that point on. I thought there were going to be some fights in our section with all the jawing going on between several UK and SC fans.

The foul calling was atrocious. I haven't seen a replay of the game, only highlights but there were so many bad calls against UK in the first half with guys being straight up on fouls or over the back no calls. As far as I was concerned Tony Greene called a good game but the other two were doing their best to keep SC in it in the first. The funny thing is that in the second half the Gamecock student section was chanting how the refs suck. I thought well at least that is something we can agree on.

I have been down to Columbia 8 times in the past 9 years and their student section continues to be appalling. They were flicking off UK fans, chanting BS, and making fun of UK fans (one punk was making fun of an overweight UK girl and laughing at her). By the way, my 9 year old daughter and 14 year old son were dog cussed walking into the football game this fall. It's just unbelievable anyone would act that way, I just don't get how you can treat people with such disrespect. I had one fan welcome me to at the beginning of the game so I know they're not all bad. Most SC football fans I know root for UNC in basketball anyway since their team is typically so horrid. In fact all a few of them could say to me on the way out was Go Tarheels to which I promptly responded Go Tigers (they love Clemson).

Anyway, it was an awesome performance by the CATS and they made it a great day. Unbelievable dunks! The GO BIG BLUE chants from the crowed ran throughout the game. My kids got to slap hands with all the players go in the tunnel and Briscoe came back out afterwards to sign autographs and take pictures with the kids. All in all a great day! My family and I are moving back to the promised land in the next few months so it might be my last trip to Columbia and it couldn't have come on a better note.

I've thought them contemptible ever since they joined the league. They have the ultimate fan inferiority complex- they've never won anything in either major sport. They've always been 2nd best in football in their own state. In hoops, theyve lived in the Carolina/Duke shadow, then they join the SEC and get abused by us and several others. It's made them a shrill and despicable bunch of overcompensating loudmouths.

We lived in Charleston for years, I knew tons of Gamecocks fans that were good people. They're definitely not all bad people. Clemson fans used to be the biggest douches.

I agree...10-20% of them are pretty cool. Clemson fans...70-80% are great in my book. They stick to football and know their place everywhere else. At least they have a championship to speak to and have a reputable program these days. Clemson is also a nice place to visit where as Columbia is the arm pit of SC in my opinion. I do love Charleston by the way. Fripp Island is awesome as well.

I find it odd that the SC fans pull for UNC Basketball; when all of the UNC Basketball fans I know hate SC. Go Cats!!

I know. It was the strangest thing when I moved down here. I don't understand how you don't root for your school no matter the sport but SC fans really don't care about basketball and the ones up here in the north part of the state want to root for a school that is good in bball so many of them choose UNC. I agree with you, I have never met a UNC fan that doesn't hate SC but mainly because they hate all that is the SEC.

For any fans at the game, do you know if Poythress was on the bench - or did he stay back in Lexington?

My brother lives in Lexington, SC and he says he cant believe the idiocy of the fanbase. Only time I had a problem with a opposing fan in Commonwealth was with Guess Who. USCjr. That trophy case shine brightly.

I would hate UK fans too. How many times has the BBN taken over their arena? Plus our football team beat them this year and of course there's the universal hatred for Cal.

Thanks for the report OP. I hope I don't get blasted, but the SC game is the one football tailgate I really look forward to. There are a bunch of cock fans, maybe 15 or so that come up and we always make it a big deal and share our food and booze. We met them randomly one year when they beat us to our spot. Been doing it for 10 years or so. They even invite us to come down and stay with them. Everyone has a different experience obviously.

Hey man, I'm happy your experience has been a good one. It gives me hope. Again, I know they're not all bad, I just don't understand why anyone has to act so hateful towards opposing fans.

I lived in Spartanburg for three years. A lot of what OP says was my experience as well. The Clemson fans I knew were like UK fans and USC fans were like IU or U of L fans. I wish we could trade with the ACC. In the Spartanburg/Greenville area, football is number one of course but what's surprising is that baseball is number two. There have been a lot of really good hoops players that have come from there.

We're talking about a school whose mascot is a fighting rooster. In the Upstate area where I lived they uncovered a bunch of upstanding citizens who were fighting toothless bears against trained dogs. Every day the news was about someone abusing an animal or a kid. Or something racial.

Thanks for the great post. I'm only 2.5 hours from Columbia. My wife and I are going to have to go and represent one of these years. Can't wait to see one of my customers. His daughter is a USCjr cheerleader. I'm proud of her, even if she cheers for USCjr.

Your post doesn't represent most Gamecock fans. I had a great time with some UK fans sitting near us. I mean it's the SEC, nobody is going to pat u on the back when their team is getting hammered. Of course there are always the few dummies around, but Gamecock fans I believe strive to show sportsmanship to opponent fans. Plus when you are on top..you get everyone's best shot in most cases. True USC fans recognize they have had little basketball success in many years. It is exciting to finally get to fight for games that mean something.

Thanks for the great report, OP.

I lived in Greenville for a little while and traveled in the area quite a bit. I found a lot of the USC fans to be a bit more hostile and arrogant than their pedigree would suggest. Now there are some really good people, too...don't get me wrong. BBN certainly has our share of doosh canoes. The difference is we at last have the tradition to somewhat back up the arrogance if not the foolishness. That said, I really enjoy when I can talk casually and reasonably with a rival fan, and I HATE people who just want to be stupid for the sake of being stupid or just to draw attention to themselves. Or worse, want to show off to their buddies or girlfriends how "tough" they are.
