It has been mentioned recently on several websites that UK's football program is about to experience some action with transfers. This has been offered as a reason why Coach Stoops signed 18 hs players yesterday when he had room on the roster for several more.

First of all, I suggest that there will be both incoming and outgoing transfers. Some players have been recruited over, and will leave. Massive turnover is occurring on UK's offensive coaching staff, which will inevitably lead to a few players feeling out of place. December and January are typically a time of year when outgoing transfers occur, and the end of the spring semester is another peak time for players to leave for obvious reasons. I have some ideas about a few UK players who might leave, but I won't name names now.

With regard to incoming transfers, Justice Dingle has already pulled the trigger and joined his younger brother as a Wildcat. Analysts seem to think JD will become a DE in Stoops' 3-4 system.

If a player isn't in the Transfer Portal, there is no point in a current discussion. Maybe later, not now. I have seen unfounded rumors about other transfer possibilities, but I haven't seen many comments looking at it from a previously connected point of view.

So here are some ideas. These are not predictions. I don't know what these players will do. But all are currently in the Transfer Portal, and there are some obvious superficial reasons to link them with UK speculatively now.

One name that has already come up is Bryan Hudson, a former all state lineman at Scott County hs in Georgetown. During Hudson's recruitment, UK offered a scholarship but Hudson didn't show much interest. Hudson signed with VA Tech and has seen a lot of snaps as a part time starter at OG and C. Perhaps the 2019 Belk Bowl changed his perspective. As a lineman, that game must have been an eye opener for Hudson.

Hudson's VA Tech teammate Doug Nester was highly recruited out of Spring Valley hs in Huntington and turned down a UK scholarship offer. Nester is also in the Transfer Portal, and could find opportunities at UK because of the coming OL turnover. But there will be a great deal of interest in Nester from many programs.

Zach Carpenter is an offensive linemen from Moeller hs in Cincinnati. Carpenter turned down a UK scholarship offer to sign with MI, but now he is in the Transfer Portal.

Big receiver CJ Boone from St. Louis, MO, was recruited hard by Coach Marrow but turned down a UK scholarship offer to sign with MO. Now he is looking for a new program.

Maurice Massey, exact same story as CJ Boone.

Receiver Elijah Bowick, a Charlotte, NC, product, turned down a UK scholarship offer to sign with VA Tech. Now he is looking for a new program.

Speed receiver Eddie McDoom was recruited by Coach Gran out of Winter Garden, FL, and appeared to lean toward UK at one point. But he signed with MI and then transferred to SFL. Now he is in the Transfer Portal again.

Receiver Darryle Simmons was heavily recruited out of Philadelphia by Coach Clinkscale but turned down a UK scholarship offer to sign with VA Tech. Now he is in the Transfer Portal.

Tall receiver Jonah Morris was recruited out of Akron by Coach Marrow but signed with IU and then transferred to Akron. Now he is looking for a new program.

Receiver DeMarcus Gregory comes from Byrnes hs, a Duncan, SC, program that has produced UK football players in the past. Gregory turned down a UK scholarship offer to sign with Ole Miss, but is now in the Transfer Portal.

Defensive lineman Brandon Taylor was heavily recruited by Coach Marrow out of Lima, OH, but signed with PA St. Now he is leaving Happy Valley.

Highly recruited defensive lineman Jordan Woods was offered a UK scholarship coming out of Citra, FL, but signed with GA Tech, then transferred to FIU. Now he is in the Transfer Portal again. Longshot, but could excel in the right defensive system.

LB Luke Fulton was heavily recruited out of Cardinal Mooney hs in Youngstown, OH, by Coach Marrow and appeared to lean toward UK at one point. Then he signed with MI St, but is now looking for a fresh start at a different program.

S Russ Yeast, son of former UK star Craig Yeast, verbally committed to UK and then very unwisely signed with UL. Now he wants out.

Can you clarify the expected new transfer rule for us? I believe all of the players who have not transferred before will be immediately eligible. How about those who have previously transferred? Will they have to sit out a year unless they are a gruduate xfer?

My goodness, I didn’t realize how many kids UK has offered that went to VA Tech.! It would be nice to take 2 of their starting lineman to plug into our line next year though!
Because of Power 5 competition, UK's coaches probably offer about 10 times as many scholarships as they can actually fill. They have to give out a lot of offers to wrestle 20-25 players away from other SEC, ACC, and B10 schools. Ever since UK revved up football recruiting in PA and along the east coast, UK's recruiting territory overlaps more than before with VA Tech's. But the prominence of former VA Tech players on this list is more of a reflection of the number of players leaving VA Tech this year than of the number with UK offers that VA Tech signs. Our major recruiting rivals are OH St, MI, MI St, PA St, AL, and the SEC East schools.

WRs we offered that went elsewhere and did not have success. Yikes! Must be a hard position to evaluate.

I can't really say what is expected. The transfer principle you described currently applies to college basketball for this year. As far as I know, each football transfer is still considered on an individual basis, although the rules have obviously been relaxed a great deal. It has become unusual for a college football transfer to have to sit out a year, but it still happens. I assume it will become even less common, and might go away completely. But until there is a definitive rule change, IDK. Obviously, COVID has impacted the rule making process in a number of respects.

The NCAA is in anti-trust troubles. I look for a lot of their good for one and not the other rules to be relaxed or completely done away with.

I just wonder if some/many of the transfers are players who just haven't continued to improve and were recruited over at their school. I have no way of knowing, but, realistically, of the players listed above, how many could be expected to plug in and be no worse than on the 2-deep? Maybe all of them, I don't know. But, a kid who transfers from Akron or So. Florida, unless it was a scheme or personality thing, would they be contributors here? Again, I have no idea but we've seen other transfers who we were excited about hardly ever see the field. Justice Dingle is an obvious exception, imo.

I just want to say ,Glad to see you back . I was afraid the COVID had gotten you !

Fuente was so close to gone, they formally announced his retention, right before announcing they'd not accept a bowl bid. Hmmm... anyone want to give me odds on him being gone before 2021 arrives?

There needs to be at least one year change in scholarships to adjust to the senior players that decide to return. Does anyone know if it is in the works?

Maurice Massey, exact same story as CJ Boone. --- but, was

Missouri wide receiver Maurice Massey has been dismissed from the team after being arrested, school officials said Monday.

Massey, 20, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of third-degree domestic assault, fourth-degree assault and first-degree property damage, according to the Boone County Sheriff Department. He was released after bonding out of jail.

Massey had not played for the Tigers this year after he opted out of the season because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Thanks. I did not have that information. Scratch Massey. Sounds right for UL.

Thats not true at all regarding transfer policies. Changes in that area are mostly due to public perception. The notion that the NCAA would be ripe for a bunch of lawsuits has been pitched on message boards for 25 years on each and every issue that comes up, but no lawsuits are ever successful - you never see a kid suing to play after being denied eligibility because any decent attorney will know its a waste of paper.

I read something about it a week or so ago. Not on a message board. I'll look for it and post it.

I agree I didn't represent my statement the best way possible. I didn't really differentiate the anti-trust from the transfer. I do stand by what I said, I think a lot of the seemingly arbitrary governance by the NCAA is on it's way out.

Marcus Fleming, highly touted WR, just entered the portal. Leaving Nebraska. We did offer, but don't know much more about his recruitment and if we were ever seriously entertained by him.

Would be nice to get a proven field goal kicker . Maybe I just haven’t noticed but it seems like that would be a position where you would see a lot MAC and lower division kickers developing to where they could come in and immediately be able to help , but it seems like grad transfer kickers are rare .

After the Ole Miss game, wasn't Ruffalo pretty solid? I don't remember any PAT misses after that game. Hit a couple of longer FGs and most of the medium range ones. Thought he did the job after the UM fiasco.

Do you know which of these transfers are likely to end up here?

At the time I posted the OP for this thread, Justice Dingle had recently announced his pending transfer from GA Tech to UK. Our coaches probably expected VA Tech transfer Bryan Hudson to come to UK, but Hudson subsequently chose UL. Doug Nester is transferring to WVA. Zach Carpenter is transferring to IU. Jonah Morris is transferring to NCO. Russ Yeast is transferring to KA St, and I wouldn't be surprised if UK turned him down first. I remember Coach Marrow was furious when Yeast decommitted from a prior UK class.

There may be some circumstantial evidence now that LB Luke Fulton could be about to transfer from MI St to UK. Fulton is from Youngstown OH (Coaches Stoops' and Marrow's hometown) and, like Coach Stoops, is a Cardinal Mooney hs graduate. When Jamin Davis announced his early departure for the NFL this week, that created a fit for Fulton, who was the #15 overall prospect in the state of OH as a hs senior.

AFAIK, there is nothing new on CJ Boone, Elijah Bowick, Darryle Simmins, Eddie McDoom, DeMarcus Gregory, Brandon Taylor, or Jordan Woods. None have committed, so all hypothetically remain candidates for UK and other schools in the region.

The following players remain uncommitted in the transfer portal. All held UK scholarship offers coming out of hs before choosing other schools, but I did not discuss them in the OP.

Jammie Robinson, S, Leesburg GA. Very good football player. Transferring from SCA, and knows Coach Wolford well. Leesburg is also the hometown of current UK recruit Chauncey Magwood.

Rashawn Williams WR Detroit, MI. Williams was recruited by Coach Clinkscale but chose IU. Now he wants to get a fresh start.

Warren Thompson, WR, Seffner FL. Thompson signed with FL St, but is transferring now.

Randall Haynie, CB, Ft Lauderdale FL. Haynie signed with Vandy, but wants a fresh start now. We could use another experienced CB.

I have not included Wan'Dale Robinson in this discussion because he has not entered the transfer portal. Unless and until he does, rumors about him transferring anywhere from NE seem unsubstantiated. If he enters the portal, he would probably be a candidate for UK but would have to work past the fury expressed by Coach Marrow when he first decommitted from UK.

Maggard is saying if he comes to UK, it would be in part his relationship with Marrow?

Under NCAA rules, our coaches cannot even contact a player on another college team unless the player enters the transfer portal. Wan'Dale Robinson is not in the transfer portal. I don't know what Maggard thinks, but these are the rules. Under certain circumstances, a representative might contact UK informally on a player's behalf. But Coach Marrow can't have a relationship with a NE player under the rules. And if Coach Marrow's relationship with Robinson was this good when Robinson was in hs, then why did Robinson decommit from UK in the first place?

I'm not saying it won't happen. What I am saying is that I see a lot of rumors, and most of them don't add up.

I'm aware, I'm pretty sure Maggard would be aware of this as well. Maybe not I guess. If you watched the ESD coverage, Marrow and Stoops called out many of the high school coaches by name and applauded them for the work they are doing to elevate high school football in Kentucky. For me, it's pretty easy to read between the lines of how these talks would be happening, if they are in fact happening.

None of that has anything to do with a player being able to sue the NCAA as you suggested. They set rules voluntarily enacted by member schools and its really as simple as that. If the rules are changed then so be it, but you cant take the NCAA to court to get around those rules - thats why no one has ever successfully done it.

The NCAA is very concerned with Congress enacting legislation however yes. Thats the name and likeness stuff especially. Congress can basically change the rules because they can tie federal support of schools to whatever conditions they choose.

The commission recommending a football split is a realization that too many schools with vastly unequal resources are under a similar umbrella.
