I wouldn’t say he wrecked us. He left us in a good position and left on his own terms. Thank god he’s gone but I don’t hold too much ill will towards him (especially now with how awesome Mark Pope is turning out)

I'm talking about the embarrassing losses the last 5+ years, the circus around him, the talking down to fans, the NBA first culture and the total lack of awareness this guy has. He was prioritizing individual players and the NBA over UK and got mad at us when we called him out on it.
Plus, the guy left us with zero players.
Cal did bigtime dakage to UK, Pope is fixing it, but it won't be easy.
But, the damage he did to UK, is nowhere near as bad as he's doing to himself right now. I'm trying to figure out if he realizes it, or just doesn't care.

Yeah it’s just hard for me to hold any ill will towards Cal when I’m so happy with where we ended up (and in year 1 post-his tenure). He certainly disappointed but man I’m too happy with where we’re at now to dwell on that. We’ll welcome Cal back to Rupp in 10 years just like we do with Tubby, Ricky P, etc.
And the one way Cal didn’t damage us is that Kentucky was still considered the place to be in college basketball along with Duke, KU, etc even with the results weren’t there the last few years. And we didn’t have to pay him shit lol
Exactly! Totally a terrible response as to why your team didn’t perform. THIS IS THE CRAP WE’VE PUT UP WITH FOR 5-6 YEARS! However with a focused coach in place; things look much better. We’ll still have losses coming…but I feel 100% better knowing Pope is manning the helm.

YOU guys are the Karens. For AT least 5 year every other thread basically boiled down to " Cal sucks" in one way or another. It was exhausting. When he left I thought, finally that's over, and we can all move on to more constructive discussions. But no some of you can't let it go and continue to spew venom. I might point out that UK is in the middle of its best season in recent memory, some haven't noticed because they are still obsessed with Cal

Keep in mind Cal, with all his ability to recruit the highest of the highest, would not have won the games the Coach Pope has currently (at UK). Now does that mean Pope is better than Cal? Well…that remains to be seen. However I like our chances and hope we steal a few “un-winnable” games during this season to pad our tournament resume. This Florida game will be anothet quad 1 game to jot down. Where as a year ago the game would have gotten away from Cal as bad as it did at Tennessee today.
At the end of the day Cal could have had a similar result with both his recruiting and portal. Sure on-court coaching and defending the “high ball screen” is his kryptonite, but being able to adjust and see on court results is what I want to see. The Ohio State game was one game that was hard to watch…but the fellas responded well!

You’re right. We’ve been wrecked before. Sutton wrecked us. Cal left and we were in the top 5 a few months later.
Cal lifted up the program in a big way for a long time. He raised our profile to where it should be. Then he lost his fastball. It happens. We’ve moved on and it’s going well.
Ignore it. You’re not gonna stop people from talking about a coach that has spent the last 15 years here. You’re just not.
He left us with 0 players after Almost every HS kid was signed and delivered. We just were fortunate Pope was a hidden gem that has ties to us and he assembled a kick ass staff who identified a group of transfers and the HS kids we could get that work well together. I’ll always be grateful he let us out of that ridiculous contract though.

Yeah I think that’s the norm though. That happened to pretty much every major school with a new coach, so not gonna blame Cal for that. More than anything, he left the Kentucky “brand” in a good place (in addition to the contract)

I have been wanting Cal gone since 2018 and many people here were still supporting him in 2024. I never wanted to hear his name again but the contrast yesterday shows how wrong so many were. For years.

I think he is going to absolutely drive the Arkansas fans NUTS. They obviously want to win and be competitive and their coach gives more of a ish about the NBA and doesn't care if they win as long as their Draft Stock is high.

I really loved what Cal did here. I think he may eventually come back around like Pitino did.. but his recent career turn is really astounding. Like I said, he needs to just focus on winning basketball games, which I don't think is really a strong priority for him right now.
