So tired of last two years with Robinson back there it was either fair catch or let it drop in front and let it roll 20 more yards. Do we have legit return guy this year?

Yes - several. Foster and MacGinnis are weapons for sure. Timmons and Juice should handle the PR and we have quite a few candidates for the KOR spots.

I believe that Robinson was back on punts because he consistently catch the ball which is no small feat in the face of SEC coverage coming at you like interstate traffic. Timmons was having problems with ball security on punts we were told. Getting a return is a great bonus but giving up the ball is a huge loss. The D has just stopped the opposition and won that possession and for them to have to trot back out after giving up 35 yds on the punt is crushing. Robinson did his part to help UKFB. He got a lot out of his ability in a tough situation.

This.

Sounds like they really wanna try King at kick off returns, which has me excited. Kid is super fast, shifty, and much more built than I imagined when just looking at his ht/wt. Special teams is where you can steal games with great plays.

King looks like a great fit at KOR if he can catch the ball. He is a different player physically than I expected. Bigger and more developed.

If he can catch the ball always has me scratching my head???? Major college football players should be able to catch kickoffs and punts....mindboggling

Yeah I heard the staff mention King with the PR/KR duties..I think he'd be a perfect fit..that's one of the perks of building depth at a position like RB and some of these skill positions, your special teams really start to benefit because you can afford to stick some of those quality backups over there..Rich Brooks was always good at sticking those guys like Alfonso Smith on kickoff coverage and they were demons (and those NFL staffs love guys where they get the most bang for their buck and they can play special teams)

It's keeping your composure while waiting for the ball to come down with 2 gunners bearing down on you thats the tough thing to do, plus knowing when to make the catch and when its too risky to attempt. I have a theory, no scientific proof or anything, that kids with a baseball background, especially outfielders, can get to punts guys without baseball backgrounds can. Because they are just better at judging the trajectory of the ball better and go there.

I also think kick returning and punt returning take different skills. A kick returner needs to see where the seem is, make one cut to get there and use his speed, while a punt returner needs to have the ability to make a couple guys miss. Todd Gurley was a great kick returner, he returned 4 for TDs in limited number of touches as returner in 3 years, while missing 9 of those games. because of that vision and ability to make that one cut to it and was blistering fast for 235lb. Never saw him return a punt, but I don't think he could

Right on, Grumpy.

Nothing like wanting to sneak a peek at those footsteps when you know you can't afford to. I thought Robinson did a good job last year because of his judgement, no great returns but not many mistakes. When he went out we lost a lot of yards because the returner let a few of them roll for 20 or more yards.

Outfielder theory a good one. Outfielders know how to run after a flyball without making the ball bounce up and down.

I returned punts in college. It's no easy task. Most college punters can make it knuckle sky high, and as mentioned before, having the foresight and peripheral to know when to wave and when to make a play is a tough skill to acquire.

It's a nerve racking position to play, thats for sure.

Kick returns on the other hand are breezy.

Agree, kick returns are much easier than fielding punts. Especially if you are the fastest player on the field, but then I don't think I ever had that luxury.

The first thing you look for in a punt returner is can he catch the ball. Fumbling a punt is a major disaster. Fair catching a punt and preventing another 20 or so yards roll is a good thing. If the punt returner can get return yardage that is just a bonus.

It is my understanding that Timmons has had trouble with ball security when he is fielding punts and that is why he has not been used back there much. Punt returning is not for everyone.

If King is a good punt return man that alone would be enough for him to play and not redshirt. Heck maybe he could also return KOs.
