Are We Going To End Up Like the Cincinnati Reds?

Are we losing out on the best players because of being outspent by the bigger money teams? Or is Mark Pope looking for players that fit his system? You gotta have some slashers who can score to break down defenses, and Oweh isn’t enough.
If that's the case we may have to go the Calipari route in terms of roster size. Spend big money on a 7 man rotation and pray you stay healthy.

When this NIL/ portal era began, there was only speculation about who would remain on top, because most of us, outside from the UK program, only knew about potential donors at other Universities through hearsay.

But now that we are a few years into to it, it’s starting to become clear who is going to invest top dollar and who isn’t.

And so far, only one program seems to be able to operate with an open checkbook, and that program isn’t called BYU!

The money rumors being an issue with Uk so far do look accurate. Hope not tho
What rumors? On KSR they have said many times lately that we are very well set up on NIL for this current cycle. Where are you seeing otherwise?

People need to stop assuming Twitter / Insider narratives are THE story. Everything with recruiting, especially portal recruiting, should be taken with a grain of salt. If we are wide eyed and honest, the fans really don't know what's happening other than verifiable on-campus visits, but if you read the Twittersphere or one of three UK sites, you'd think we are inept in recruiting....

Judge the result (which isn't known yet), not the assumptions on process.

No, we won't. That is ridiculous. We are still the Yankees. Be patient.

lol.. no we are not the Yankees lol. The Yankees have the most titles, Kentucky does not. The Yankees, are competing for titles last year and this year and beyond. The YANKEES, are spending money. This is an insult to the Yankees organization quite honestly. Back in 2015? Fine, we can make that argument I guess. Not now. And maybe when we really look at it, maybe not ever.

This is the type of hubris that IMO is going to be the downfall of our program.. people wondering why the rest of America's recruits aren't banging on our door to come play. Kentucky has never been the Yankees.. if anything, that's Duke now.

You are special lol

Comparing us to the Yankees is special, some of you need to seriously considering leaving the state boundaries once in a while.

Welcome to BBN big guy. We have been great for 100+ years.

The "Yankees of college basketball" is a common nickname for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team, known for their consistent success and dominance in the sport. [1, 2]
Here's why: [1, 2]
Frequent Success:
The Kentucky Wildcats have a long and storied history of winning, with numerous national championships and a consistent presence in the NCAA Tournament.
Relevance:
Just like the New York Yankees in baseball, the Wildcats are a team that consistently remains relevant and a force to be reckoned with in college basketball, often drawing national attention and hype.
Similar to Yankees
The Yankees are a baseball team that is known for winning and being a consistent force in the sport.

We are a middle market team with middle market money. The honest answer is yes, or no. Because we do have more legitimate history then the Reds, but it won’t be surprising if we are a consistent top 20 team that has to win with strategy, coaching, and teamwork if we want to make Final Fours.

That isn’t what anyone wants to hear, but this is Kentucky. We are small, poor, and our president is actively trying to destroy the state’s primary export. So ya know.

I’m confident we will consistently be one of the better teams in the country. We will be better than most, but if the college landscape shifts to one where money is the key factor in success we will never be able to compete every year by outspending 99% of our competition. It just isn’t happening.

I think Cardinals is our closest MLB comparison.

Consistently good to great, but never consistently great. More championships than every team but one, with several down periods thrown in.

You are correct that Kentucky has never been the Yankees. We win our titles in clusters and have experienced multiple 10+ year title droughts since the 1950s.

I'll tell yah, knowing thousands of Yankee fans, it's a one-way comparison lol. Again, leave the state once in a while. No one in NY is comparing the Yankees to Kentucky basketball, at least not anytime recently.

Then who are your "Yankees?" UCLA because they had one incredible decade?

No didn't you hear? We have 27 titles apparently. This place is getting loony.

Mostly referencing stuff towards the end of the Cal era

It's actually been a common nickname for decades. We are the most consistently dominate team in our sports history. Same as the Yankees. UCLA has had ***significantly*** more down stretches than us.

I don't know if I would call any team the Yankees.. but you HAVE to give some credence to UCLA for simply having the most titles.. and not just by 1 or 2..

I also think.. as much as it churns my stomach to say, Duke is probably the "Yankees" of right now. Or maybe better yet, the Dodgers.

You are completely missing the point but that is expected. The term "they are the Yankees of blah blah blah" just means that they are the most historically successful and significant team in their sport. Not the team that had one great decade 50 years ago. Not a team that has only been good for 50 years. Not a team that has exactly the same amount of titles. Our TV ratings confirm this regularly. People hate us like they hate the Cowboys and Yankees.

I'm just telling you.. no one in NY compares the Yankees to the Kentucky wildcats lol. If Duke wins the title this year.. thats sadly going to be the most apt comparison.

And not for nothing, lets take it a step further.. do you feel were on the same sort of path of relevancy as the Yankees are right now? Because I'm a little skeptical. The only thing standing in the Yankees way is a team that's literally breaking the salary cap in the Dodgers.. The only things standing in Kentucky's way are.. NIL, Mitch, being in a city/state that has no appeal, being in one of the more poor states, rampant cheating from other schools, subpar recruiting and transfers to date, a coach who might be too nice and lax, ..

There's nothing "Yankees" about what Kentucky basketball is doing right now.

Their one decade is the closest thing college basketball has seen to a true dynasty like the old time Yankees.

Over the last 35 years, there’s not really a Yankees of college basketball, but as much as it pains me to say it, Duke and UCONN are probably the closest with Duke winning 5 titles since 1992 and UCONN winning 6 titles since 1999.

We have 3 since 1996. UNC has 4 since 1993. UF, KU, and Nova have 2 each since 2006. Everyone else has 1 or fewer.
