Apparently Magoon wasn't offered...

The full NIL package from Pope upfront due to injury concerns

SDSU gave it to him all upfront
This was weird to me. Why even waste the time or resources on a kid you weren't confident in health-wise, and wouldn't even offer him a "complete" package? Why would a staff think they would have a shot with doing this? Just wasted time in my opinion.

It isn’t crazy to offer a larger deal with a minimum guaranteed and then the remaining paid in increments based on surpassing milestones (every 10 games etc)

Even pro sports contracts are 10 year-200mil- 50 mil guaranteed (ball park etc)

He choose the lower total number but higher guarantee and the city/school he’s familiar with. If it was me, I’d be confident I could stay healthy for a whole season and take the higher total….assuming it wasn’t performance/stats based

I don't blame him for worrying about health issues after what happened to him this year.

Maybe he's got some other fish on the line.

So a zoom call to prospect is now wasted time. Ridiculous. We probably spent no more than a hour or 2 on the zoom. How else are supposed to gauge interest? Carrier pigeon?

I don't buy it. In this day and age you're gonna tell these kids "well we're gonna hold some of your money back because we don't fully trust you're gonna play for us for 30 games".

Wth? We're never gonna land anyone elite doing that. You have to pay them. It is what it is. This is 2025. Like..cmon. if they get injured I mean..oh well? I can't believe Pope would be this dumb. This guy was gonna be a HUGE piece for us.

Just more BS damage control! UK offered, SDst. countered, and UK balked, and had someone float this preposterous story!😩

Fellas, it’s time to face the music… UK does not have the NIL backing that is being floated. It was only a matter of time before the veil on this was lifted.

I was suspicious when Pope was recruiting the entire Top 5 freshman (at different times) and failed to land on a single one! If UK wanted to make a statement that they were in it to win, they would have closed on one!

Heck, even Hubert Davis had one foot out the door, they threw the kitchen $ink at Belichick, and STILL managed to pluck Wilson away from Pope’s grasp!

This isn’t true. Incentive based NIL deals are not legal.

I can’t imagine any player worth a damn accepting a deal that is voided if he
suffers a high ankle sprain. I call BS.

Exactly. One, like has been said, I dont think incentive based NIL is even legal. 2..no one is gonna come play for you if you tell them.."hey if you get injured, no more money."

Like wth? That's nonsensical.

Yeah, all you can do is laugh! UK will put out a team next season, and I’ll be watching and cheering like I always have.
Me laughing at your post only means I thought your post was silly. It has nothing to do with you being a fan and pulling for the team. It also has nothing to do with you as a person, only that one specific post. I’m sure you’re a true fan and a good person. Apologies if I offended you.

If it is true that we don't have the NIL backing necessary, then I blame a bunch of that on Calipari who was hiding guys from being exposed, guys you KNOW were getting paid, and the donors have been burned.

Probably not true. Like 99% of the things on the internet.

Because as a program you have to protect yourself from scenarios where a player decides to use an injury as an excuse to sideline themselves and protect their draft stock. There has to be some level of accountability and expectation of services rendered before checks are written and cashed.

Then youre not gonna get elite guys. You can't have it both ways. If youre not willing to pay someone is.

Is it the wild wild west? Yeah. But until there's tougher legislation it is what it is if you want to compete.

I find this hard to believe
Can not believe that UK would even put out anything so crazy, in todays world.
they already know that everything is based on $ so why throw in some kind of silly wording

If we're gonna start coming to negotiations with these kids offering them discounted NIL because we're concerned they might sit out or milk an injury, you might as well just scrap the program.

I don't buy this.

I’m going to quote my first boss in New York in 1999 at a bar in lower Manhattan one night about four scotches in:

“It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. It matters if it’s effective”.

That guy made an entire career out of selling things that people didn’t even know they wanted.

Some of you all are calling this kid "elite?" Wow.

Maybe he's not, but we're not gonna get any that are if we're offering discounted NIL because we're afraid they might sit out or get injured. Which is why I don't believe the story. It's moronic.

It's stupid to pay NIL and not be able to hold players accountable to that. I know it's not the schools paying it, but schools should have some say in this. I wouldn't want to pay a player all of it upfront, either. They could easily just take the money and run. That has to change.

The dude weighs 15 pounds and has an injury history. He would get eaten alive in the SEC. He would have been a solid bench/development piece but there are better options.

Which is why the only way it makes sense is if Pope offered it not really wanting him that bad and knowing it would push him away because he has better options in his pocket.

IF that is the case. I hope he does.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but until all that stuff is legislated, again, it is what it is lol.

To be fair, why wouldn't this be a part of every NIL package? I mean, every player is accessible to injury. Look at our roster last year.

I don’t believe it honestly, he apparently committed to come so he obviously didn’t have an issue with however it worked.
